Team: Data Foundations owns the core data products that power Komodo’s Healthcare Map. We design and deliver the foundational data assets, models, and serving capabilities that make healthcare data usable, performant, and trustworthy for customers and internal product teams. Our work reaches customers directly and also powers consuming applications through APIs, analytics layers, and other data delivery surfaces.
Mission:This role exists to architect and deliver the foundational data products and serving capabilities that turn complex healthcare data into trusted, production-ready assets for customers and applications. As a Staff-level IC, you will set technical direction across data modeling, productization, analytics enablement, and scalable delivery patterns, partnering with Product, Data Science, and consuming application teams to make Healthcare Map data usable at enterprise scale.

- Data Product Development & Delivery: Architect, build, and deliver scalable Healthcare Map data products that power direct customer use cases, APIs, analytics surfaces, serving layers, and internal applications.
- Scalable Data Systems: Design and implement high-performance data processing and serving patterns across large-scale healthcare datasets, using the right tools for the problem across SQL, Python, Spark, Rust, C++, and emerging AI-enabled engineering workflows.
- Foundational Data Models: Create shared data models, productized datasets, reusable libraries, and technical standards that become the foundation for downstream product, analytics, and application teams.
- Serving & Consumption Enablement: Build data products that are easy to consume through APIs, serving layers, exports, analytics environments, and customer-facing delivery mechanisms.
- Cross-Functional Product Delivery: Partner with Product, Data Science, Quality, Platform, and application teams to translate complex healthcare use cases into production-grade technical designs and execution plans.
- Technical Leadership: Lead complex, multi-quarter initiatives, making clear trade-offs across performance, scalability, maintainability, cost, reliability, and time-to-market.
- Quality, Observability & Trust: Define and implement data quality checks, validation frameworks, observability, lineage, monitoring, and alerting to ensure Healthcare Map products are accurate, explainable, and reliable.
- Engineering Excellence: Raise the bar for system design, code quality, documentation, testing, CI/CD, and operational readiness across the team.
- Engineering Leverage: Mentor engineers through design reviews, technical deep dives, pairing, and architectural guidance, helping the team make better decisions at scale.
What you bring to Komodo Health (required):
- Data Product Engineering Expertise: Extensive experience building production-grade, large-scale data products, services, and analytical systems that serve real customer and business use cases.
- Modern Data Systems Depth: Strong technical depth across SQL, distributed data processing, cloud data platforms, MPP databases, and high-scale compute frameworks such as Spark, Python, Rust, C++, or equivalent technologies.
- Architecture & Systems Design: Demonstrated ability to design data models, serving patterns, platform components, and system architectures for complex, high-volume data environments.
- Healthcare Data Product Judgment: Ability to reason through data quality, identity, longitudinal patient journeys, claims or clinical data complexity, and downstream consumption needs.
- AI & ML Enablement: Experience designing data workflows, feature pipelines, evaluation datasets, or infrastructure that supports AI/ML training, inference, experimentation, and monitoring.
- Analytical & Statistical Rigor: Strong ability to use data analysis, statistical reasoning, hypothesis testing, and experimental design to validate product quality and business impact.
- Technical Communication: Ability to explain technical decisions, trade-offs, risks, and delivery status clearly to engineers, product partners, data scientists, and senior stakeholders.
- AI-Augmented Engineering: Ability to use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, Claude, or similar systems to improve engineering productivity, design quality, testing, documentation, and decision-making.

This role is essential for transforming massive, complex healthcare datasets into performant, trustworthy, and usable data assets that directly power both customer-facing applications and internal product innovation. Mission
The Senior Data Engineer will design, build, operate, and improve large-scale data pipelines and foundational data products that power Komodo’s Healthcare Map, analytics products, and downstream AI/ML-enabled use cases. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on processing complex healthcare data at scale, improving reliability and performance, and contributing to the technical direction of core data systems.

Key Responsibilities
- Build, operate, and optimize large-scale production data pipelines using Python, SQL, Airflow, cloud infrastructure, and distributed processing frameworks.
- Transform massive healthcare claims, EHR, and reference datasets into trusted, performant Healthcare Map data products and serving-ready data assets.
- Strengthen pipeline reliability through data quality checks, validation, lineage, observability, monitoring, and alerting.
- Debug complex data, system, and performance issues across computationally intensive workflows.
- Partner with Data Product Quality, Product, Platform, and Engineering teams to translate healthcare data needs into scalable technical solutions.
- Contribute to system design, architecture, code quality, testing, documentation, CI/CD, and rotational production support.
- Enable downstream analytics, product, and AI/ML use cases through high-quality, well-modeled, reliable data.
What you bring to Komodo Health:
- Healthcare data experience across claims, clinical, RWE, provider, patient, or life sciences datasets, including coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, NDC, or NPI.
- Strong hands-on experience building, operating, and debugging production-grade data pipelines at scale.
- Advanced Python and SQL skills, with experience in Airflow or similar workflow orchestration tools.
- Experience with Spark or comparable distributed data processing frameworks.
- Proven experience designing and operating data solutions in AWS.
- Strong instincts for data quality, reliability, root-cause analysis, and production troubleshooting.
- Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly and collaborate with engineering, product, and data partners.
- Comfort using AI-assisted engineering tools for productivity, debugging, documentation, and technical exploration.
AI-Augmented Engineering Expectations:
- You will be expected to leverage AI-augmented engineering tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, to improve productivity and technical decision-making. You will accomplish these outcomes through the following responsibilities…
- Own the architecture, reliability, and cost efficiency of Komodo's cloud infrastructure (AWS primary, GCP); drive full IaC coverage and lead Kubernetes operations at scale
- Own data infrastructure operations, cost governance, and security hardening; partner with Data Product Engineering on modernizing data delivery infrastructure
- Lead security posture management across cloud, application, and identity layers — vulnerability lifecycle, penetration testing, IAM, SOC 2 compliance, and AI security governance
- Define and instrument cost-per-unit metrics, implement per-team budgets with automated alerting, and give leadership direct visibility into infrastructure efficiency
- Operate internal developer platforms with self-service onboarding, CI/CD, and observability infrastructure that improves engineering velocity
- Own incident response, on-call rotations, and post-mortem processes; drive reduction in preventable operational incidents and maintain high availability SLAs
- Lead, recruit, and grow a globally distributed team of cloud, data, and security engineers; foster a culture of ownership and technical excellence
What you bring to Komodo Health:
- 8+ years in infrastructure, SRE, or platform engineering; 3+ years leading teams in an AI/ML-intensive environment
- Hands-on experience with AI workload infrastructure — LLM serving, agent orchestration, GPU compute, or ML pipelines — and the reliability and cost challenges they introduce
- Deep AWS and production Kubernetes expertise (EKS, autoscaling, multi-cluster management) and strong IaC discipline (Terraform or equivalent)
- Demonstrated track record of driving significant cloud cost reduction through systematic FinOps — team-level budgets, cost-per-unit metrics, and leadership-facing dashboards
- Practical security and compliance experience — cloud posture management, vulnerability lifecycle, IAM, and SOC 2 or equivalent frameworks; comfort in regulated environments
- Strong executive communication skills — able to translate infrastructure strategy into business outcomes for CTO, Finance, Legal, and Product stakeholders
- Active user of AI tools in your own workflow; track record of driving AI-assisted automation adoption within your teams
