Senior Software Engineer, Recommendations

What you'll do

As the Senior Software Engineer for Product Recommendations, you will be a key contributor in building the machine learning–powered systems that decide which products to show to whom and when across all channels powered by our platform. This hands-on backend role focuses on converting billions of behavioral events into personalized product recommendations that drive revenue for merchants. You will define technical direction, build, and operate services and data pipelines end to end, from data ingestion and feature generation to ranking models and APIs.

• Lead the design, architecture, and operation of backend services that power product recommendations across Klaviyo experiences (email, SMS, KAgent, onsite, etc.), upholding standards for reliability, performance, and clear APIs.
• Architect and maintain robust, large-scale data processing pipelines (e.g., using Apache Spark or similar frameworks) that transform raw events and catalog data into high-quality features and inputs for recommendation models, ensuring data quality and lineage.
• Collaborate closely with ML engineers and product stakeholders to strategically productionize recommendation models—defining high-level interfaces, robust feature contracts, and advanced deployment patterns for batch and/or real-time inference systems.
• Drive the development of ML/AI systems such as vector search that power recommendation, semantic search, and sophisticated agentic use cases.
• Implement and evolve data and service observability (metrics, logging, tracing, dashboards) to proactively ensure recommendations are correct, fast, and highly available for all customers.
• Contribute to and mentor others on shared data frameworks, libraries, and architectural patterns to accelerate the development of new recommendation use cases and iteration velocity across the team.
• Work with Product to break down projects into clear milestones, balancing the need for rapid experimentation with technical soundness and long-term maintainability.
• Lead data-driven decision making and A/B testing efforts—ensuring recommendation systems are instrumented with the right metrics, and independently interpreting results to guide future product and engineering iterations.
• Participate in on-call and incident response for the systems you own, driving major post-incident follow-ups that substantially improve the resilience and operability of our recommendation stack.
• Champion and drive the transformation of engineering workflows by integrating AI from the ground up—for example, using AI to accelerate development, automate complex tests, or build smarter monitoring and debugging tools.
• Share knowledge, mentor junior/mid-level engineers, and define best practices on working with large-scale data frameworks, distributed systems, and integrating ML into production systems.

Who you are

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, with experience building and operating mission-critical backend services and systems in a production environment.
• Experience in backend and distributed systems at scale; you have a proven track record working on high-throughput, highly available services and are an skilled in optimizing for latency, reliability, and operability.
• Proficient in Python and open to working in other languages
• Comfortable with cloud-native architectures (AWS preferred) and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes); you manage infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines as a core part of your development process.
• Experience in data-driven decision making and A/B testing—you can define how to instrument experiments, read and interpret results, and ensure learnings are folded back into system design.
• Comfortable designing and querying data models in relational, analytical, and NoSQL datastores (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, data warehouses, Redis, vector databases).
• Feel at home with modern DevOps practices (CI/CD, monitoring, alerting) and how to apply them to architect large-scale data and recommendation systems.
• Track record of owning multi-component projects end-to-end—from initial technical design and implementation through rollout, monitoring, and sustained iteration.
• Excellent technical collaborator and communicator: you can clearly articulate complex technical trade-offs to both technical peers and non-technical partners, and you work effectively to drive alignment across ML Engineers, Software Engineers, PMs, and other teams.
• You are a self-starter who has actively experimented with AI in work or personal projects and are excited to responsibly explore and define new AI tools and workflows to enhance team productivity and system intelligence.

Nice to have

• Previous experience working on product recommendation systems or adjacent ML-powered features (ranking, personalization, search, or similar).
• Experience with big data frameworks such as Apache Spark (or similar technologies like Flink, Beam, etc.) for architecting and building complex batch or streaming pipelines.
• Experience in AI/ML systems and products, such as integrating models into production systems, building features powered by ML, or contributing to the ML infrastructure.
• Experience training and iterating on machine learning models (e.g., for ranking, prediction, or personalization).
• Experience with ML and distributed compute frameworks such as Ray or similar tools.

About the Role

We're looking for a Director of Security Risk and Trust who breaks the mold of traditional compliance leadership. This isn't a role where you'll spend your days pushing spreadsheets and chasing attestation deadlines—this is a role where you'll engineer solutions to governance and compliance challenges at scale, build systems that make security and trust a competitive advantage, and lead a team that operates at the intersection of security engineering, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

You'll own the strategy and execution of Klaviyo's Risk and Trust program, partnering deeply with Engineering, Product, Legal, IT, and business teams to embed compliance and risk management into how we build and operate—not bolt it on after the fact. You'll bring a strong technical foundation and an engineering mindset to everything you do, from designing automated compliance pipelines to developing governance frameworks for AI/ML systems. You'll need to be as comfortable reading Terraform configs and reviewing architecture diagrams as you are presenting risk posture to executive leadership.

This role reports to the CISO and is a critical member of the Security leadership team.

How You'll Make a Difference

Build and Own the Risk and Trust Strategy

• Define and execute a forward-looking strategy that scales with Klaviyo's growth, product evolution, and expansion into new markets and regulated industries
• Develop a risk management program that quantifies and communicates risk in terms the business can act on—not just heat maps, but data-driven models that inform real decisions
• Own the compliance roadmap across frameworks including ISO 27001, ISO 42001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and emerging AI governance regulations, identifying where frameworks overlap and engineering unified control sets rather than duplicating effort
• Translate regulatory and compliance requirements into clear, actionable engineering requirements that development teams can implement without ambiguity

Engineer Solutions, Don't Just Document Them

• Build and maintain compliance-as-code infrastructure—automated evidence collection, continuous control monitoring, and policy-as-code implementations that reduce manual toil and increase assurance
• Design and implement tooling and integrations (leveraging APIs, scripting, and orchestration platforms) that connect GRC workflows with engineering systems (CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, identity platforms, etc.)
• Partner with Engineering and Platform teams to embed security and compliance controls directly into the software development lifecycle, infrastructure provisioning, and deployment pipelines without introducing toil or friction
• Evaluate, select, and optimize platforms and technologies, building automation that turns compliance from a periodic exercise into a continuous, real-time capability

Lead AI Security Governance

• Develop and implement a comprehensive AI/ML governance framework aligned with ISO 42001, the EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF, and emerging global AI regulations
• Partner with ML/AI and Data Science teams to establish security and compliance guardrails for model development, training data governance, model monitoring, and responsible AI deployment
• Conduct and oversee risk assessments specific to AI/ML systems, including risks related to data poisoning, model integrity, bias, prompt injection, and supply chain threats in the AI ecosystem
• Stay ahead of the rapidly evolving AI regulatory landscape and proactively position Klaviyo's governance posture to meet or exceed emerging requirements

Drive Cross-Functional Impact

• Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to ensure security and compliance are built into product design from day one—acting as a trusted technical advisor, not a blocker
• Collaborate with Legal and Privacy teams to operationalize regulatory requirements and ensure alignment between legal interpretation and technical implementation
• Work with Sales, Customer Success, and Trust teams to support customer-facing security and compliance needs, including customer audits, security questionnaires, and trust documentation
• Engage with executive leadership and the Board to communicate risk posture, compliance status, and strategic GRC investments in clear, business-relevant terms

Get Your Hands Dirty

• Roll up your sleeves and do the work—conduct technical risk assessments, review architecture designs, write automation scripts, troubleshoot control gaps, and dive into the details when it matters
• Personally lead critical compliance initiatives, audit responses, and incident-driven governance activities when the stakes are high
• Maintain deep technical currency by staying hands-on with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), infrastructure-as-code tools, security tooling, and modern software development practices

What We're Looking For

Must-Haves

• 10+ years of experience in security, governance, risk, and compliance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role building and scaling programs at high-growth technology or SaaS companies
• Strong engineering and technical foundation—you've written code (Python, Go, or similar), built automation, worked in cloud-native environments, and can engage deeply with engineering teams on technical design and implementation
• Deep expertise across multiple compliance frameworks including ISO 27001, ISO 42001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR, and SOX IT controls, with a demonstrated ability to rationalize and unify controls across overlapping frameworks
• Demonstrated experience in AI/ML security and governance, including familiarity with AI-specific risk frameworks, responsible AI principles, and the unique security challenges of machine learning systems
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and security (AWS strongly preferred), including understanding of IAM, networking, encryption, logging/monitoring, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.)
• Proven ability to build compliance-as-code and automated GRC capabilities, including evidence collection automation, continuous monitoring, and integration with engineering toolchains
• Exceptional cross-functional leadership skills—you've successfully partnered with Engineering, Product, Legal, and executive stakeholders to drive security and compliance outcomes without relying on authority alone
• Experience managing external audits and regulatory examinations end-to-end, with a track record of clean results and efficient audit processes

The Role
We’re looking for a Lead Product Manager to own product development for Klaviyo’s Orchestration experience, with a particular focus on the workflows and editor surfaces used to build and manage marketing automation.

Flows are one of the most critical parts of the Klaviyo platform, enabling brands to create sophisticated lifecycle marketing programs. In this role, you will shape the future of how customers design, manage, and optimize these workflows, ensuring powerful capabilities remain intuitive and easy to use.

You’ll partner closely with engineering, design, data, and go-to-market teams to evolve the orchestration experience across the platform. This role will work with an engineering team of roughly 8–10 engineers and collaborate closely with another Product Manager in the broader core product area.

• Execute pipeline runs in Claude Claude and tmux; manage long-running batch processes; interpret logs and output to confirm data integrity before downstream handoff.
• Maintain pipeline orchestration scripts and configuration; extend agent coverage as new data elements are prioritized by GTM leadership.

Agent Tuning & Improvement

• Refine detection rules, prompt logic, and confidence thresholds based on output analysis and false-positive/negative patterns.
• Evaluate agent accuracy by segment (Enterprise vs. MM/SMB) and recommend rule or workflow changes backed by evidence.
• Run bake-offs (vendor vs. AI enrichment) to optimize cost, coverage, and accuracy; document results for decision-making.

Sentinel → Offshore Resolution Loop

• Own the handoff between Sentinel detection output and Concentrix triage queues; define queue structure, priority tiers, and resolution instructions.
• Monitor offshore resolution quality and throughput; refine detection rules based on patterns surfaced through triage.
• Close the feedback loop: track resolution outcomes back to agent configuration to reduce recurring false positives and improve detection precision.

Data Quality & Enrichment Operations

• Maintain ops-only staging fields; manage the promote-to-production flow with audit controls.
• Design and run AI-assisted enrichment workflows (Clay + LLM prompts) with evidence links and confidence thresholds.
• Monitor fill-rate, sampled accuracy, freshness, and cost-per-record by source and segment; surface vendor performance issues and recommend changes.
• Keep data dictionaries, SOPs, and runbooks current as agents and processes evolve.

Cross-Functional Partnership

• GTM Systems (SFDC): field configuration, permission sets, automation, flows.

Required

• 3–6 years in Data Ops, Sales Ops, or GTM Ops with hands-on data quality ownership for account and contact data.

• Working experience with Claude Code or comparable LLM-based tooling in an operational (not just experimental) context.

Why This Role, Why Now

GTM Data Strategy & Operations stood up from scratch with no predecessor. Today the function runs on three offshore contractors and zero FTEs, managed by a single leader who is simultaneously building the agentic infrastructure, operating it in production, and driving major initiatives (hierarchy redesign, data quality assessment, vendor optimization).

The operating model is deliberately agentic AI–first: a multi-agent pipeline (Cartographer, Sentinel, Resolver, Reporting) handles detection, enrichment, hierarchy mapping, and conflict resolution at scale. This is not a future-state vision, these agents are live and processing enterprise account families in production today.

The problem: one person cannot build, operate, and extend this system while also managing strategic workstreams. The function currently covers only core Tier‑1 fields. Dozens of account, contact, and lead signals remain unaddressed. Every pipeline run, every failure diagnosis, and every offshore handoff flows through a single point of failure.

This role is the first onshore execution hire for an agent operator who can keep the system running, improve it, and extend detection and resolution coverage as GTM leadership prioritizes new data elements.

Sit between AI systems and GTM data. Operate, tune, and extend our agentic data quality pipeline (detection, enrichment, hierarchy mapping, conflict resolution) so it runs reliably, improves continuously, and expands to cover more of the data landscape. Own the handoff between automated output and human review, managing quality and throughput with our offshore team. You don’t build agents from scratch, but you run them, evaluate their output with GTM data judgment, and make them better.
