This position will play a pivotal technical leadership role in realizing Heartflow’s vision of creating a single, comprehensive platform to manage heart disease. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead the architecture and data modeling necessary to build a next-generation distributed system that seamlessly and securely integrates Heartflow’s cloud services with complex, on-premise hospital Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.

You will own the technical strategy and execution within the interoperability domain, elevating how clinical data is processed, modeled, and delivered. Operating at the staff level, you will drive architectural decisions across multiple components, mentor engineering teams, and establish robust software development best practices. You will ensure that the platform's foundation scales efficiently and strictly adheres to the compliance, security, and quality standards set forth by the FDA and other regulatory bodies.

Job Responsibilities:

Lead Platform Architecture & EHR Integration: Architect and oversee the development of Heartflow’s interoperability services. You will design the robust technical bridge between complex, on-premise hospital Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and our AWS cloud environment.
Drive the Single Platform Vision: Define and execute advanced data modeling and persistence strategies. You will structure complex clinical data to realize our vision of a comprehensive, unified platform for managing heart disease.
Own Mission-Critical Components: Direct the technical strategy and development of critical data acquisition and ingestion pipelines, ensuring the seamless, scalable, and secure extraction and normalization of patient data from diverse hospital networks.
Build Enterprise-Grade APIs: Design highly reliable, secure, and low-maintenance APIs (leveraging REST alongside healthcare standards like FHIR and HL7) to securely connect on-premise hospital components to our cloud infrastructure.
Champion Compliance & Security: Drive architectural decisions according to the highest software development best practices, ensuring all data flows and system integrations strictly adhere to the standards and guidance set forth by the FDA and other regulatory bodies.
Provide Technical Leadership: Join a team of high-performing engineers on a mission to revolutionize precision heart care. As a staff-level technical multiplier, you will mentor peers and guide system design.

Software Engineering & Architecture: Expert-level Python development, applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles, and architecting robust microservices and event-driven architectures at scale.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our world-class engineering team. In this role, you will help design and develop cloud-based services and modern web applications that power the next generation of Heartflow technologies, including a new orchestration pipeline, which will drive critical workflows across the company.

You will work cross-functionally with Software Engineers, Product Managers, Quality Assurance, Usability Designers, Process Engineers, and Regulatory to create impactful internal applications and infrastructure. Key Responsibilities

Lead end-to-end feature development across the full technology stack
Independent, end-to-end ownership of the design, development, testing, and maintenance of robust APIs (Python, AWS), interactive web applications (Django backend and Vue.js frontend), pipeline orchestrations, and associated infrastructure.
Contribute to the long-term technical roadmap by providing architectural feedback that ensures current systems remain compatible with future orchestration goals.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the technical excellence of our team.
Make data-driven decisions while practicing creative problem solving.
Write clean, maintainable, well-documented code with a focus on high-stakes quality, performance, and user experience.
Improve infrastructure components including orchestration pipelines, test frameworks, and CI/CD workflows.
Lead the technical integration of emerging tools, such as Agentic AI frameworks, to automate internal developer workflows and improve team velocity.
Contribute to releases of application deployments and participate in on-call production support as needed.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, and Engineering stakeholders to define and implement product features.
Participate in code reviews and champion engineering best practices.
Contribute to a culture of technical excellence, innovation, best practices, and continuous improvement.
Ensure compliance with FDA regulations for medical software and supporting systems, including documentation and quality assurance processes.

Required Qualifications

Education:
- BS in Computer Science or a related technical field + 5 years of experience;
- OR MS/PhD in Computer Science or related field + 3 years;
- OR equivalent practical experience as a full-stack software engineer.
Proficiency in TypeScript or JavaScript.
Strong development experience with Python.
Strong cloud development experience (preferably AWS).
Familiarity with modern web frameworks (Django & Vue.js strongly preferred, but Angular/React is acceptable).
Deep understanding of backend and frontend security best practices.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze and resolve complex issues.
Solid grasp of modern software development methodologies including CI/CD, testing, and Agile practices.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

You will work closely with our Platform engineers and development teams to ensure our critical systems are highly available, scalable, observable, and performant. As our Staff SRE, you'll be the primary expert responsible for our entire compute ecosystem. Your key responsibilities will include:

As a Staff SRE, you'll operate at the highest level of technical expertise and influence. You won't just solve problems; you'll prevent them at a fundamental level across organizational boundaries.

Lead the design, implementation, and operation of reliable, scalable cloud infrastructure
Define and begin rollout of SLI/SLO standards across microservices
Develop self-service instrumentation tooling enabling engineering teams to own observability
Establish observability and monitoring using OSS toolchain
Serve as a technical escalation point for critical incidents, perform deep-dive root cause analyses (RCAs), and implement robust corrective measures to prevent recurrence.

Set the technical direction and best practices for the entire SRE and engineering organization. Mentor mid-level and senior engineers on design patterns, operational rigor, and reliability principles.

Required Qualifications

8+ years of progressive experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Production Engineering, or a closely related role.
Deep expertise with:

AWS
Kubernetes, Helm
Observability stack (Prometheus, Grafana, Mimir, Loki, Pixie, Tempo)
CI/CD systems (ArgoCD, Harness)

Fluency in at least one major scripting/programming language for automation and tooling (e.g., Python, Go, or Java).
Hands-on engineering mindset — able to instrument services directly, not just configure tooling
Track record of building or significantly improving incident detection and response systems
Have deep technical familiarity with Kubernetes ecosystems, containerization technologies, and modern IaC tooling (e.g., Terraform, Crossplane, or Operators) so you can effectively guide the team's technical decisions
Exceptional communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice-to-Have
