The primary goal of a Head of Internal Controls is to strengthen Ebury's governance and internal control current environment by safeguarding assets, minimizing operational risks, and ensuring adherence to all applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards. This position will enhance our Risk Management Framework incorporating data analytics processes and AI tools.

Requirements

We are seeking a candidate with:

• Ability to interpret complex concepts, analyze audit data, identify root causes, and develop effective solutions.
• Proven experience in identifying and auditing operational risks and controls within a wide range of business processes in the finance industry.
• A strong grasp of internal control frameworks, with specific knowledge of COSO.
• A solid understanding of governance, risk management, 3 lines of defense and control principles at both an operational and organizational level.
• Relevant team management experience.
• Exceptional analytical and project management skills, including AI process development.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, to stakeholders across multiple disciplines,
• Experience in facilitating high-level risk meetings with senior leadership including Board members.
• Skilled at balancing and prioritizing multiple competing demands

Responsibilities include

• Plan, coordinate, execute, and monitor all phases of the internal control framework across the business.
• Manage and perform second-line-of-defense assessments, including the design and operational effectiveness testing of controls.
• Maintain and review the second-line-of-defense review calendar, ensuring timely completion of reviews and communication of reports.
• Lead the planning and scoping of second-line-of-defense reviews, selecting appropriate control samples.
• Report identified issues and manage remediation plans to ensure they are completed.
• Manage and maintain the first-line-of-defense testing calendar, confirming results are reported within established timelines.
• Coordinate the submission of internal control assessment reports to regulatory bodies.

Financial Risk - CASS & Safeguarding Manager

Role Overview:

Ebury is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Financial Risk - CASS & Safeguarding Manager to play a crucial role in ensuring the robust protection of customer funds and adherence to relevant regulations, particularly concerning safeguarding requirements and, where applicable, the Client Assets Sourcebook (CASS) or equivalent local regulations. 

Based in our Madrid office, you will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and overseeing the monitoring framework for safeguarding and CASS compliance across the organization. Crucially, this role extends beyond safeguarding; you will also be a key contributor to Ebury’s Financial Risk Management function. This position requires exceptional analytical rigor, organizational skills, and the ability to coordinate across multiple internal stakeholders to ensure risk standards are implemented consistently.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and Implement Monitoring Frameworks: Design, implement, and maintain comprehensive monitoring programs to assess the effectiveness of safeguarding arrangements and, where applicable, CASS compliance across all relevant business areas.
• Conduct Compliance Monitoring: Execute regular monitoring activities, including but not limited to:
• Reviewing and testing policies, procedures, and controls related to safeguarding and UK Client Money & Assets (CASS).
• Analyzing transaction data and reconciliation processes to identify potential breaches or weaknesses.
• Conducting thematic reviews and risk-based assessments of safeguarding and CASS compliance.
• Performing on-site and remote reviews of operational processes.
• Identify and Report Findings: Accurately document monitoring activities, findings, and recommendations in clear and concise reports. Escalate significant compliance issues and potential breaches in a timely manner to relevant stakeholders and senior management.
• Track and Validate Remediation: Monitor the implementation of agreed-upon remediation plans to address identified weaknesses and ensure timely resolution of compliance issues. Validate the effectiveness of implemented corrective actions.
• Provide Expert Advice and Guidance: Serve as a subject matter expert on safeguarding requirements and, where applicable, Safeguarding rules and provide guidance and support to relevant departments on their obligations.
• Develop and Deliver Training: Contribute to the development and delivery of training programs on safeguarding and CASS compliance to relevant staff to enhance awareness and understanding of regulatory requirements.
• Maintain Regulatory Awareness: Stay up-to-date with changes in relevant regulations, industry best practices, and regulatory expectations related to safeguarding and client asset protection. Assess the impact of these changes on the firm's compliance framework.
• Contribute to Policy Development: Assist in the development, review, and maintenance of internal policies and procedures related to safeguarding and CASS compliance, ensuring they align with regulatory requirements and best practices.
• Liaise with Internal and External Stakeholders: Effectively communicate and collaborate with internal departments (e.g., Operations, Finance, Treasury, Legal, Compliance) and external stakeholders (e.g., auditors, regulators) as required.
• Contribute to Risk Assessments: Participate in the firm's risk assessment processes to identify and evaluate safeguarding and CASS-related risks.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Law, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Proven experience (typically 3-5 years) in a compliance or risk management monitoring role within the financial services or payments industry, with a strong focus on safeguarding requirements and, ideally, experience with CASS or equivalent local regulations and/or with exposure to financial risk metrics (e.g., liquidity, market or credit risk)
• In-depth understanding of relevant payment regulations and safeguarding obligations.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements.
• Excellent attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly and concisely.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.  
• A quantitative background or a strong ability to handle complex financial data sets with extreme precision.
• Additional Regulatory knowledge of MiFID, COBS, FCA principles, financial promotions, best execution, client classification desirable.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Fluency in English is a must and Spanish is highly desirable.

What you will do: 

• Develop and maintain a well-designed model risk management framework that meets our fast-paced and dynamic company’s needs and regulatory requirements. 
• Guiding and advising teams in different parts of our organisation including Finance, Operations, Analytics, Decision Science, Sales & Marketing on model development, validation, and implementation processes. 
• Reviewing and evaluating validations of models including accuracy, performance, and predictive power. 
• Monitoring model performance over time and recommending necessary updates or modifications 
• Providing reporting and intelligence concerning our models to Risk Committees and Ebury Executives 
• Ensuring adequate documentation for all model development and validation activities.
• Keeping abreast with changing regulations pertaining to model risk and ensuring compliance. 
• Providing training and raising awareness on model risk issues in the organisation. 
• Leading efforts to improve the data quality and monitoring of data feeding into each model. Liaising with the Data Teams to maximise the value of our Data Observability platform 

What we expect from you: 

Analytical Skills: you can understand complex mathematical models and statistical analyses, as well as identify potential risks and inefficiencies. You have a background in quantitative fields such as statistics, mathematics, or quantitative finance. Knowledge of tools and techniques used in quantitative modelling. Comfortable coding or reading model written in Python and SQL. You like building dashboards and gaining insights from data

Risk Management Expertise: You have experience of working with various types of risk, including operational, financial, and market risk, and be familiar with regulatory requirements related to risk management. 

Communication Skills: You can communicate complex concepts and risk assessments to stakeholders and top-level management. 

Knowledge of Financial Models: You are familiar with the types of financial models used in the company and industry at large. 

Data Platforms and Data Teams: You are familiar with a modern Data Platform and the related engineering, analytical, design and architectural skills involved with meeting the needs of a data-driven business 

Attention to Detail: With risk management, small details can have a significant impact. So having an eye for detail and ensuring all aspects of a model are scrutinised is a vital skill.

Regulatory Knowledge: You have a good understanding of industry regulations and standards related to risk management.

Certified Risk Manager: Certifications like FRM (Financial Risk Manager), PRM (Professional Risk Manager), or CRM (Certified Risk Manager) could be beneficial.
