What You'll Be Doing

• Building cross-platform purchase flows, social gifting experiences, and commerce surfaces that meet users where they already are — in voice, in chat, on mobile.
• Owning projects end-to-end: scoping, designing, building, shipping, and iterating based on experiment results. You'll run A/B tests, read the data, and make the call on what to do next.
• Working directly with game studio partners to understand their needs, answer technical questions, and improve the tools we build for them.

A Day In The Life

This is a hands-on engineering management role. You'll lead a team of full-stack engineers while staying close to the code yourself — reviewing PRs, debugging production issues, fixing bugs, and occasionally shipping features alongside your team. You'll partner with senior engineers to set technical direction, but you'll have the context to make tradeoffs because you're genuinely close to the work. If you're excited to build a new product area from the ground up — and to grow the team building it — this role is for you.

What you'll be doing

• Leading and growing engineers. Hiring, coaching, and developing a team of full-stack engineers. Structuring the team so the right people are in the right roles, placing your strongest technical contributors where they'll have the most impact, and helping everyone advance their careers.
• Staying hands-on technically. Reviewing code, understanding the systems your team owns, and jumping into the codebase when it helps unblock the team or sharpen your judgment. You'll have informed opinions on technical decisions because you're close to the work.

Discord's Developer Platform team is responsible for building the Discord Social SDK, on-platform connected gaming experiences, and commerce platform that power Discord's gaming ecosystem. Our platform enables game developers to integrate Discord directly into their games, bringing features like text and voice chat along with Discord's social graph to enhance player engagement. We're building the infrastructure to make Discord the platform for all gamers and all games.

Discord is looking for an experienced, technical, and mission-driven Director of Engineering to lead our commerce platform and on-platform player experience teams. You will report directly to the VP of Engineering and will be instrumental in building out our commerce strategy while managing the teams responsible for how game developers show up on Discord.
