Position Overview

CRA is seeking an exceptional Principal Energy Economist with proven testifying experience to join our London office. This role offers the opportunity to be a leader in building CRA’s European Energy Practice by bringing our established U.S. expertise to the rapidly evolving UK and European energy markets.

The successful candidate will:
•  Act as a testifying expert in regulatory, litigation, and arbitration settings, providing credible, independent economic evidence across both electric and gas sectors.
•  Be a leader in building CRA’s European Energy Practice, helping to recruit, mentor, and develop a world-class team.
•  Work closely with colleagues across North America and Europe to bring CRA’s market-leading frameworks and models (e.g., resource adequacy, gas planning, transmission and pipeline economics, tariff design, and large-load integration) to European clients.
•  Build and maintain strong client relationships with utilities, regulators, policymakers, investors, and developers.
•  Contribute to thought leadership through publications, conference participation, and public testimony.

Qualifications
•  Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in Economics, Energy Economics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
•  Significant professional experience (typically 10+ years) in energy economics (electricity and gas), market analysis, or regulatory consulting, with a proven track record as a testifying expert.
•  Deep knowledge of European or UK energy markets, regulatory frameworks, and decarbonization policy.
•  Demonstrated ability to originate and manage client engagements while mentoring and developing junior colleagues.
•  Strong quantitative and analytical expertise, with comfort leading modeling and economic analysis.
•  Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex economic issues clearly and persuasively.

Position Overview

Principals have the unique opportunity to learn from, and work alongside, some of the most respected scholars, specialists, and industry experts in the world.  We tailor our analyses to the facts of each case, employing tools such as merger simulation, upward pricing pressure analysis, econometrics, bargaining theory, or game theory as needed. Whether before a court or a regulatory agency, CRA consultants set a high standard for the clear communication of sophisticated economic analysis in complex cases. A typical Principal would:

• Work closely with leading academics and consulting with attorneys and other clients in industry and government on a wide variety of finance, strategy and economics issues;
• Act as a primary point of contact for clients and assist in the development and presentation of client deliverables including expert reports summarizing our opinions, conclusions, and recommendations and third party financial, market and industry data;

Senior Associates at CRA work on project teams alongside senior and more junior consultants on a variety of client engagements. Candidates will be expected to rapidly take on genuine responsibility, assisting Vice Presidents and other senior staff by providing conceptual and practical input to competition case work as required. The role brings with it the possibility of working on some of the largest and most significant competition cases in Europe, playing a key role in the shaping of the cases.

Desired Qualifications

• First degree in economics and a PhD/DPhil in economics from a well-regarded institution with a strong foundation in microeconomics, preferably with a specialism with large data sets (empirical PhDs) or Industrial Organisation and/or statistics/econometrics), plus up to 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Non-PhD applicants should have strong academic achievement in a Master's program, plus 5-7 years' relevant work experience;
• Professional work experience in consulting, business, or with a competition authority strongly preferred;
• Demonstrated understanding of economic concepts, competition/regulatory authorities, competition policy and quantitative and qualitative analysis methods;
