Our Culture
Our culture is anchored in excellence, meaning constant improvement, and it is deeply tied to our mission. Because markets are objective, competitive, and getting smarter everyday, we need to keep rapidly improving to have any chance of beating them. Truth is our most essential tool for engaging with the markets and constantly improving because once you know what's true about your problems and opportunities, you can determine how to get better. Valuing truth means being transparent about your decision-making and mistakes, giving and receiving feedback with humility, and fighting for the best answers over hierarchy, ego, or self-interest. Operating this way is hard – it's only possible because we build meaning in our work and relationships. This meaning comes from the audacity of the mission, and the joy of working alongside people who make you a better version of yourself. The culture, like Bridgewater itself, is always evolving. In 1997 our founder Ray Dalio wrote down his lessons, starting with a Philosophy Statement which remains our foundation. This later evolved into a set of 300+ Principles. In 2022, when Ray transitioned the company, we re-underwrote several of those principles and evolved others, with a specific focus on Meritocracy. Today the culture sits, alongside our people, as our most important edge. When we get it right, it’s the engine that powers everything else.

For 50 years, Bridgewater has pursued one idea: the world can be understood. Markets and economies follow cause-and-effect relationships—and by understanding them, we think we can beat the markets and generate true uncorrelated returns ("alpha") at significant scale. Our clients include some of the world’s most sophisticated institutional investors who turn to us to use our unique insights to solve their biggest problems.
Generating alpha at scale is an exceptionally difficult task. It requires predicting the future and doing so better than the millions of other extremely smart, highly motivated people who are trying to do the same. Our investment strategies seek to understand and navigate macroeconomic shifts that drive the world’s most liquid markets (bonds, currencies, equities, commodities, credit). These shifts have a very limited sample size (some of them haven’t yet happened in our lifetimes).
Our approach is to start by digging deep to develop a fundamental cause-effect understanding of the economic and financial relationships that drive markets. We represent this understanding in a model of the world that we call our System—code and algorithms that generate views automatically, by ingesting vast amounts of significantly cleaned data and reflecting the relationships we’ve learned over decades of intense study and experience. Being systematic allows us to stress-test the quality of our ideas through time, and also helps ensure that at any given point, our positions reflect everything we’ve ever learned, so that our people can spend all their time focused on compounding on our understanding at a faster rate than markets are learning.
This approach requires us to be at the forefront of human-machine collaboration. Since 2012, Bridgewater has aggressively pursued the vision of the artificial investor that can do everything a human can, with computers not just representing the insights but also generating the insights themselves. In 2023, we introduced AIA (Artificial Investment Associate), our fully machine-powered investing strategy. Our learnings in building AIA are now transforming even our human investors’ jobs, allowing us to rapidly discover and systemize new insights, and accelerating our transformation toward a fully integrated system that combines the best of human and machine intelligence.
Every day we obsessively interrogate our systems against our independent investor insights, and work to evolve our systems to reflect how the world is changing. Beating the markets with this approach requires intense collaboration between brilliant people who constantly push themselves and each other to improve every week, to arrive at the best ideas without ego or politics. We rapidly elevate the best thinkers to greater responsibility.
We are looking to hire great talent for our Investment Associate roles. Does this sound like you?
Our investment associates are the core team responsible for generating our macro and market insights, building our investment systems, and overseeing our portfolios. They are:
What do Investment Associates at Bridgewater do?
Investment Associates at Bridgewater cover a wide range of functions, and most tend to specialize in one or two areas. We need a wide range of people and capabilities to power our investment engine and take on the different responsibilities involved:
What can I expect in an Investment Associate summer internship?
Our goal is to provide interns with real and meaningful exposure to a fundamental and systematic investment process. As Investment Associates, we live and breathe markets and want our interns to have the chance to do the same. We hate the concept of “busy work” and try to make the internship as real of a window as possible. From the first week on, you’ll be expected to form your own macroeconomic and market views—including the opportunity to bet with your intern compensation and enter “positions” in actual markets Bridgewater trades, where Bridgewater will take the other side, using our in-house Investor Track Record tool.
The internship is structured around the same components as Bridgewater’s research and investment process—you’ll start by looking out at the world and perceiving the most important dynamics for investors related to a specific economy and market. You’ll then synthesize your key views. Finally, you’ll get exposure to systemization—taking your point-in-time views and working with our investors to translate the core logic into data and mathematical expressions that you can then stress-test through time.
Throughout the internship, you’ll also receive world-class markets and macroeconomic training via an abridged version of our first year Investment Associate class. This will cover the foundational frameworks, introduction to analytical methods we use in our research, and exposure to our technology stack. Our training ecosystem is designed so that anyone willing to put in the work can get the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the internship and get a taste of what it’s like to be a real macro investor.
Compensation
Total compensation for this position is $71,000 for the 8-week internship (less applicable deductions and withholdings), including a sign on bonus. In addition, our compensation package includes housing.
Previously, we used to post separate job applications for Investment Associates and Investment Engineers. As we plan for a future where we’ll need both incredible independent investor insight and deep human-machine collaboration, we are consolidating those roles into a single Investment Associate position. As described above, the IA role will still require a wide variety of people from a range of different backgrounds, and there will be many different areas of potential focus that our IAs can specialize in.

About the Security Group
The Security Department’s mission is to protect Bridgewater. We constantly evolve our cyber, physical, and staff security practices to meet business needs and stay ahead of the changing threat landscape.
About Your Role
This person needs to know how to build and how to protect. We’re not looking for someone who reviews architectures from the sideline. We need someone in the arena — writing agents, shipping code, deploying guardrails, and setting the standard for how an entire firm adopts AI securely.
This is a 50/50 role with two equally critical mandates:
PILLAR 1 (50%) — AI Thought Leader in Security: Build It
You will be the hands-on AI leader inside the Security Department, a builder who ships. You will design and implement AI agents that modernize security operations in an AI-native way: automating threat detection, vulnerability triage, incident response, compliance monitoring, and developer security tooling. You will set the vision for what a modern, agent-powered security organization looks like and then build it yourself.
PILLAR 2 (50%) — Forward-Deployed AI Security Architect: Protect It
Equally important — if not more important — you will embed directly with Bridgewater’s technology and investment teams as they build and deploy their own AI agents. You are the security expert who sits shoulder-to-shoulder with engineers and researchers, helping them ship agentic workflows that are secure by design. This is not a gate-keeping role. This is a partnership role where you bring deep architectural expertise to the teams building the future of the firm.
What We Expect
You need to have a deep understanding and pulse of the AI market — both enterprise and open-source. This space moves weekly. We need someone who’s already in it, not someone planning to catch up.
We expect this person to be fluent across the full AI stack. Not at a surface level — at the level of someone who has built with these tools, broken them, and understands their security implications from the inside. This includes:
AI Foundations & Model Layer

Our culture is anchored in excellence, meaning constant improvement, and it is deeply tied to our mission. Because markets are objective, competitive, and getting smarter every day, we need to keep rapidly improving to have any chance of beating them.
Our core mission as an organization is to understand the fundamental drivers of markets and turn that understanding into high-quality portfolios and investment advice for our clients. We do this in three critical ways: by being fundamental, systematic, and diversified. We seek to understand the economy in a fundamental way, uncovering the timeless and universal cause-and-effect linkages that drive global markets. That understanding is implemented systematically and converted into explicit rules that can be rigorously stress-tested. Finally, we create highly diversified portfolios that are not dependent on any one source of return and can survive a wide range of economic environments.
This is a high-stakes role at the epicenter of one of the world’s largest hedge funds. You will serve as the operational nervous system for a C-Suite executive within the Alpha Engine—the division overseeing our flagship Pure Alpha fund.
This is a mission-critical position focused on high-fidelity execution, triage, and extreme reliability. You are responsible for ensuring the "trains run on schedule" in an environment where the Executive can be a high-demand bottleneck. You will partner directly with leadership to orchestrate priorities, navigating ambiguous problems while executing a clear strategic roadmap.
The anticipated onsite requirement for this role is four days per week at our New York City campus.
The wage range for this role is $180,000- $280,000 inclusive of base salary and discretionary target bonus. The expected base salary for this role is between 70 - 80% of this wage range.

About the Investment Implementation Department
The Investment Implementation department is a community of diverse investment professionals whose mission is to implement our investment strategies and client portfolios excellently. Our Department is responsible for ensuring the excellent implementation of our systematic investment approach, from raw data to executed trades, with processes and logic that reflect the full richness of our investment insight, executed with a near-zero error rate, and engineered and orchestrated in a way that facilitates oversight and compounding. This is an investment department, owning the investment outcomes, and the mandate includes both the ‘run’ responsibility and the ‘transform’ responsibility, meaning daily operations as well as over time renovation of our systems.
We fulfill our mission by applying four operating principles:
About the Team
As part of the research team, the Signal Implementation group is responsible for owning and deeply understanding both the data that flows from the outside world and the logic applied to it within Bridgewater’s systematic trading systems.
About Your Role
As a Data Associate, you will help us achieve our mission by owning and deeply understanding the data and logic used to build Bridgewater’s systematic trading systems. This means understanding the content itself, the process by which the content is updated, validated, and evolved and how this content fits into Bridgewater’s understanding of the world.
In this role, you will be expected to understand both the current data ecosystem and the needs of investment professionals, with a long-term vision for how our investment data ecosystem should scale and adapt over time. You will take ownership of key data workflows, ensuring high standards for investment data quality and consistency across the firm. This is a fast paced, critical function that directly impacts portfolio construction and research alpha.
We are looking for someone who combines a rigorous analytical mindset with a passion for data, content integrity, and system improvement. The ideal candidate has several years of experience working with data systems.

We are looking to hire great talent to work in the Alpha Engine as a Management Coordinator.
About the Role
The Management Coordinator role has a wide breadth of responsibilities, spanning across multiple areas to ensure smooth and efficient day-to-day process management. In this role, you will support a subset of BW’s Senior Investor and Operations Management and their teams, getting exposure to many different areas of work while learning the business and getting things done. This role requires someone who is passionate about managing processes in a reliable manner, while also ensuring services provided are achieving the goal of the senior leader’s world running smoothly at every level. Successful candidates will thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment where one needs to juggle multiple responsibilities while being an excellent facilitator, communicator, and proactive partner.

This entails developing great investment strategies reflecting our expertise, generating alpha in the markets, researching and publishing our understanding of the macroeconomic environment, and designing solutions to help our clients invest across the region.
Bridgewater has a long history as an asset manager in Asia. It started when our founder, Ray Dalio, first visited China in 1984, and we have been managing money for sophisticated institutional investors in the Asia-Pacific region ever since our first Chinese client invested in 1993. Trading Asian markets has always been a core part of our global macro investment strategies, and several Asian economies feature prominently in the research we have published on debt cycles and the changing world order. We opened our first foreign office in China, and in 2018 we launched our first China-focused investment strategy, which has since grown to become the largest wholly foreign-owned private fund in China.
About Your Role
As a Research Associate on the Asia Solutions team, you’re on a mission to understand the fundamental drivers of markets and turn that understanding into systematic trading strategies and investment advice for our clients. You’ll help expand our understanding of how economies work and distill that understanding into systematic trading strategies. You’ll be wrestling with questions like: How do economic actors behave and what drives their actions? and How can we systematically monitor and predict their actions?
Through your focus on China’s onshore equities, you’ll be expected to cultivate a high level of expertise in Asian markets, enriching the team’s knowledge of industry and company fundamentals, staying attuned to regulatory changes, and independently formulating investment ideas within the region.
