About the role
Betterment’s mission is to empower people to do what’s best for their money so that they can live better. We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer for our rapidly-growing Betterment at Work platform, which provides modern financial benefits for today’s diverse workforce, empowering small-to-medium-sized businesses to attract and retain happy employees. You’ll lead projects that focus on the experiences of retirement advisors, as well as employees saving and planning for retirement on our award-winning web and mobile apps.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.
- New York City: $135,000-$170,000

For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Monday through Thursday, weekly.
A day in the life
- Serve as design lead, building end-to-end experiences across the employee and advisor platforms and owning all aspects of design for your projects from inception through launch
- Contribute to product strategy by identifying new opportunities, generating innovative solutions, crafting intuitive and efficient designs, and improving existing features
- Define the design of AI-powered features within the Betterment at Work platform, shaping how they make retirement planning more intuitive and personalized for employees and advisors alike
- Partner with product management, engineering, and many others, working closely in cross-disciplinary teams across business-to-business and consumer-facing product areas
- Make informed, data-backed design decisions by leveraging research, sales data, customer insights, usability principles, and analytics
- Leverage AI tools across your design workflow, using them to sharpen problem framing, accelerate exploration, and prototype ideas faster—bringing judgment to know when and how to apply them effectively, and sharing learnings with the broader team
- Invest in your craft as part of a talented, supportive design team that values open feedback and works toward a unified customer experience across all touchpoints
What we’re looking for
- 4+ years of relevant experience as a Product Designer (previous titles may have been different)
- Portfolio of extraordinary product design work across web and mobile, with proven customer and business impact
- Experience leveraging research, usability testing, and analytics to determine user problems, and inform decisions
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills; ability to align diverse stakeholders
- Strong organizational abilities, adept at managing multiple projects and timelines
- Strategic approach to design that clearly connects to business and user outcomes
- Curiosity about and experience with AI tools in your design process, and a desire to help the team develop shared practices as the space evolves
- Experience working within established accessible design systems and evolving when appropriate

About the role
Betterment's mission is to empower people to do what's best for their money so that they can live better. As a Group Product Manager within the Broker/Dealer organization, you will own and shape the product strategy for our trading and market data systems. Together, these domains underpin the every day management of over $55 billion in client assets across three investing lines of business. Your mandate spans all three of the Broker/Dealer's core priorities:
- Enable Growth - We must enable our business lines to ship new revenue-generating products that delight our customers.
- Maximize Efficiency - We strive to make our software better and build automation to prevent mission-critical teams from doing repetitive, manual workflows.
- Minimize Risk - Our clients have trusted us with their savings, and the durability of our systems need to reflect that responsibility.
You’ll be responsible for setting the long-term vision for how Betterment builds and scales its back-end investing platforms to empower our clients to make the most of their money. This includes owning the strategic direction of core systems including Trade Execution, Portfolio Management, Security Master, and our broader Market Data infrastructure. In this player/coach role, you will manage and closely partner with PMs embedded in these domains and others across the organization. You’ll bring technical expertise in securities management and trading functions, strong judgment under ambiguity, and the communication skills to navigate both deep engineering conversations and executive-level strategic discussions.
This role is based out of our NYC office. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Monday through Thursday, weekly. This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.
A day in the life
- Oversee product teams responsible for our trading and market data functions, fundamental to our role as a trusted wealth manager for clients
- Deeply understand our target clients and serve as their advocate when making back-end decisions that impact the front-end experience
- Define the multi-year vision for how our platform should evolve to meet growing business needs and architectural goals, including new asset class support, real-time data expansion, and added security classification models
- Partner with engineering leadership and stakeholders to balance roadmap priorities across all three lines of business: retail clients, advised clients, and 401(k) participants
- Manage PM(s) embedded in the trading and market data domains, providing strategic direction, development feedback, and organizational context to help them succeed
- Support engineering teams during standups, planning meetings, and retros
- Develop success metrics for your product area, create tracking plans, and clearly communicate how prioritized work impacts those metrics.
- Collaborate with numerous partners, such as Capital Markets, Custody, Investing, Operations, and Legal & Compliance, to navigate complex client situations and stay ahead of regulatory obligations
What we’re looking for
- Product management experience at a financial services or financial technology company with a focus on back-end systems and applications
- Deep expertise in and passion for financial concepts such as portfolio management, order routing, trade execution workflows, FIX protocol, and securities data management
- Strong storytelling skills to distill advanced Broker/Dealer concepts into accessible information for partner organizations, stakeholders, and executives alike
- Technical fluency: able to engage meaningfully with engineers on systems design, data modeling, and architectural tradeoffs
- Experience managing or mentoring other PMs, with a track record of growing product talent and maintaining strategic coherence across a multi-team domain
- Creative problem-solving skills to deliver innovative functionality within regulatory and technical constraints.
- A self-starter with proven success in launching products in collaboration with a broad set of stakeholders
