About the role 

We are looking for a Site Reliability Engineer I to help support the stability, health, and day-to-day operations of Backblaze’s infrastructure. This role serves as a first line of response for customer-affecting issues and production alerts, helping drive timely incident resolution, maintain service reliability, and support operational readiness across our environments. You will work closely with TechOps, Data Center Technicians, and other cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, monitor system health, support deployments and migrations, and improve day-to-day operational processes through documentation and automation. The ideal candidate is technically curious, calm under pressure, eager to learn, and excited to grow in a hands-on infrastructure and reliability role.

What You’ll Do: 

• Act as first point of contact for all customer affecting issues
• Be a Key Driver for managing the resolution of technical problems
• Ensure that incident management processes are following and that incident post-mortems are completed to capture process deviations and areas for improvement
• Deliver consistent communication to Management
• Respond to zabbix alerts/regular monitoring of zabbix, either by taking direct action on alerts or escalating. Acknowledge every alert if direct action taken, or with escalation point of contact.
• Make sure escalations are handed off successfully.
• Ensure health of pods across all sites (define pod alerts on zabbix).
• Work through daily filesystem checks for pods.
• Troubleshoot technical issues for DC Techs -> advanced pod questions, deployment questions, migration troubleshooting, and ansible playbook issues.
• Identification and escalating any potential issues regarding the network.
• Vault pre-deployment configuration and testing.
• Start Vault Migrations, monitor migration pods, handle applicable migration pod health checks.
• Document/Work on automating Daily Items.
• Document/Provide Network IP's for upcoming deployments.
• Monitor Releases/Updates to the Server Farm, escalate issues as they arise.
• Engaging in on-call rotation shifts.
• Assist fellow TechOps team members in handling tasks.
• Making recommendations for improvements in organizational productivity.
• Be able to work outside of normal business hours(weekend shift, holidays & evenings) as needed

The Right Fit:

• Must be located in Bangalore.
• 2 - 4 years of relevant experience.
• Knowledge of Sysadmin and Linux skills.
• Desire to learn and develop all necessary technical skills.
• Strong analytical thinking.
• Strong skills in working with different teams and communication.
• Knowledge of network cabling, network classification, and network topology.

What You'll Do:

Incident Management

• Available to Lead and govern the end-to-end incident management lifecycle, including detection, triage, escalation, and resolution.
• Drive major incident management (MIM) processes and communications.
• Improve MTTR (Mean Time to Resolution) through automation and process optimization.
• Establish and maintain incident response playbooks and runbooks.

Problem Management

• Maintain and improve intelligent heatmaps leveraging AI/ML to identify recurring technical themes and prioritize long-term remediation.
• Implement trend analysis and proactive problem identification using observability data and AI.
• Track and manage problem records to closure. 

Change Management

• Govern change management processes (lead the CAB), ensuring safe, compliant, and low-risk deployments.
• Define and enforce change policies, risk assessments, and approval workflows.
• Drive continuous improvement in release and deployment practices.

Observability & Service Reliability

• Maintain a strong understanding of system architecture and monitoring strategies, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement.
• Partner with engineering teams to improve system resilience and performance.
• Reduce alert fatigue by improving signal-to-noise ratio in monitoring systems.

AI-Driven Operations (AIOps)

• Leverage AI/ML for anomaly detection, predictive alerting, and automated root cause analysis.
• Implement AI-driven solutions to optimize incident response and operational workflows.
• Analyze large-scale operational data to identify patterns and recommend improvements.
• Experience with AIOps platforms or building AI-driven operational solutions.

Required Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience in IT Operations, SRE, or similar roles.
• Strong expertise in Incident, Problem, and Change Management (ITIL or similar frameworks).
• Proven experience in governing and optimizing operational processes.
• AI & Data Expertise: Strong knowledge of AI/ML concepts, including anomaly detection, predictive analytics, and data modeling.
• AIOps Experience: Hands-on experience with AIOps platforms or building AI-driven operational solutions (event correlation, alert prioritization).

Preferred Qualifications:

• ITIL certification (Foundation or higher).
• Proficiency with platforms such as Jira, SNOW, FireHydrant, Moogsoft, etc.
• Experience working in high-availability, large-scale environments.

About the Role:

We are seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to help ensure the stability, scalability, and reliability of our services and infrastructure. This role focuses on building automation, maintaining observability, and supporting incident response to keep customer-facing systems performing at their best.

The SRE will collaborate with engineering, product, and operations teams to embed reliability practices into day-to-day development and operations while contributing to tools and processes that improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.

What You'll Do:

• Service Reliability & Operations
• Own and drive the availability, durability, and performance of critical services across all production environments.
• Lead and champion complex projects from problem discovery through complete, cross-functional resolution, demonstrating high-level technical ownership.
• Define, establish, and enforce service health standards, including working with engineering leadership to implement SLIs, SLOs, and error budget policies for multiple services.
• Lead critical incident response and post-incident reviews, translating findings into strategic, long-term service improvements and architectural changes.
• Mentor others and act as a subject matter expert in following and evolving established ITIL/OSS processes (incident, change, problem, and capacity management).
• Automation & Tooling
• Design and architect scalable automation solutions to eliminate toil and improve the efficiency of operational tasks across the entire platform.
• Drive the strategic direction of monitoring, logging, and alerting frameworks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Catchpoint, ELK), and integrate them for comprehensive observability.
• Build, maintain, and secure advanced CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and complex infrastructure as code solutions (Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins).
• Write production-grade code (Bash, Python, Go, etc.) to develop new reliability tools and enhance existing systems.
• Collaboration
• Act as a principal partner to engineering, product, and operations teams, consulting on resilient system design, architecture, and operation.
• Lead and formalize the Production Readiness Review (PRR) process, ensuring robust operational handoff for all new services and features.
• Lead capacity planning and disaster recovery strategy across critical infrastructure components.
• Manage the relationship with vendors and service providers to troubleshoot systemic issues and ensure strict adherence to SLA performance.
• Drive the creation of high-quality documentation, proactively share advanced learnings, and cultivate a reliability-first engineering culture across teams.
• Continuous Improvement
• Own the creation, maintenance, and dissemination of operational playbooks, runbooks, and detailed system documentation.
• Proactively identify systemic, recurring issues and architect and drive the implementation of long-term improvements and strategic design action plans.
• Be a leading voice in promoting and embedding reliability-focused practices within development and operations teams.

Qualifications:

• Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 8+ years of progressive experience in site reliability, systems engineering, or operations.
• Extensive experience designing, scaling, and operating large-scale, production-grade distributed systems.
• Technical Skills
• Expert-level Linux systems administration and advanced troubleshooting skills.
• Lead security-minded operations, focusing on system-wide patching, hardening, and proactive vulnerability identification.
• Deep mastery of service reliability concepts, including advanced monitoring, complex alerting strategy, leading incident response, and in-depth root cause analysis.
• Advanced proficiency in at least one modern scripting/programming language (Python or Go strongly preferred).
• Expert knowledge of incident response methodologies and operational best practices.
• Proven experience designing and operating container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker) and microservices concepts required.
• Expert experience with Hashicorp products (Nomad, Vault, Terraform) in a production environment.
• Preferred Attributes
• Significant experience in a SaaS, service provider, or hyper-scale distributed systems environment.
• Deep familiarity with ITIL/OSS practices and experience defining/enforcing SLO/SLA’s.
• Exceptional problem-solving skills and a strong drive to learn and apply new, complex technologies.
• Advanced experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) in a production setting.
