Senior Engineer I, Software Engineering

As part of ASM’s Software Engineering team, you’ll develop advanced control software that drives the most sophisticated semiconductor equipment in the world. Your work will directly impact robotics, gas flow systems, and temperature control hardware—delivering real-time results in chip manufacturing. Based in Phoenix, you’ll collaborate globally and help shape the future of semiconductor automation and factory integration.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software for semiconductor manufacturing equipment
• Build software for Windows and real-time operating systems
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues in real-time control systems
• Triage mechanical, electrical, and software bugs
• Lead escalation calls with field engineers and global customers
• Collaborate with QA and Support teams to manage regression testing
• Author and review system specifications, software designs, and test plans
• Investigate internal and external problem reports and propose solutions
• Evaluate and recommend software engineering tools
• Participate in system design and scheduling efforts
• Integrate and support factory automation protocols such as SECS/GEM
• Work closely with automation teams to ensure seamless equipment-factory communication

Requirements:

• BS Degree in Computer Science or related field. MS preferred.
• Strong software development skills in C#
• 5+ years’ experience as a generalist or mid-stack software developer
• Experience in the semiconductor industry
• Hands-on experience with factory automation systems
• Familiarity with SECS/GEM, GEM300, EDA/Interface A protocols
• Experience with AMHS (Automated Material Handling Systems)

What to expect  

This position is a paid internship that is expected to start January/February 2027 and continue through April/May 2027. The duration will be 12 weeks, full time and on-site. Our internship program is for students who are actively enrolled in a full-time academic program. We are seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead development efforts for complex semiconductor processing equipment and related control systems. This role requires strong hands-on technical expertise, leadership capability, and the ability to drive high‑quality software delivery across global, cross‑functional teams. You will manage a team of software engineers (local/remote), define strategy and roadmaps, and ensure the successful execution of software development for multiple product lines.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage a software engineering team of roughly 5–10 engineers
• Strengthen team capability through cross‑training, mentorship, and structured development
• Lead mid‑size development projects (up to 5 engineers per team)
• Define and execute software development plans for assigned product lines
• Develop and maintain product software roadmaps
• Balance project portfolios to maximize technical and business impact
• Drive standardization of development processes, tools, KPIs, and best practices
• Ensure alignment and collaboration with global Software Directors, Product Management, Process Engineering, Platform Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and other stakeholders

Education

Experience Requirements

• 10+ years of software development experience, including:

  • Windows application development
  • Multi‑threaded and real‑time systems
  • Device drivers or interrupt‑driven software
  • Machine control systems in semiconductor or industrial automation environments

• Strong proficiency in C/C++/.NET
• Experience with software engineering tools including debuggers, source control, build systems, and text editors

• Strong system‑level thinking—capable of understanding how new functionality fits into complex equipment architectures
