LVT Practice Manager for The Cancer Institute

The LVT Practice Manager is part of the hospital clinical services team and assists with the organization direction, management, and evaluation of patient care services for The Cancer Institute. The LVT Practice Manager impacts the continuing goal of providing the very best in patient and customer care by promoting the philosophy, mission, and core values of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. 

List duties and responsibilities: (including equipment to be operated)

• Partners with the Director of Oncology, Diagnostic Imaging and Dermatology departments to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs, staff development and career ladder to ensure compliance with national standards and state regulatory requirements.

• Teams with the Oncology Service Head to plan, coordinate and manage day-to-day activities of the staff, including LVTs, Coordinators, and Veterinary Assistants

• Collaborate with the team leaders and staff to develop, continually improve, and promote quality standards for nursing care.
• Act as a working supervisor, work in a nursing capacity approximately 60% of the time.

• Operate Linear Accelerator and workings of Radiation Oncology department.
• Assisting the Director with daily operations, supervising patient care to ensure patient safety, and being responsible for learning departmental skillsets, chemotherapy preparation and delivery.
• They will also assist in meeting patient care requirements in accordance with physician instructions, hospital policies, and approved patient care standards.
• Inform appropriate personnel of needed repairs for equipment or unsafe conditions.

• Implement and assess disciplinary action and progress improvement as needed.       
• Must have strong knowledge and or willing to learn all aspects of Oncology.
• Performs responsibilities in accordance with hospital goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

List qualifications desired (including education & experience)

• Current NYS Veterinary Technician Licensure required, VTS preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years as an LVT in a specialty veterinary hospital
• Proven ability to lead nursing and technical staff in a healthcare environment.    

• Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Reports to: Director of Oncology, Diagnostic Imaging, Rehabilitation, and Dermatology

To support operational excellence, staff well-being, regulatory compliance, and patient safety within a high-volume, 24-7 Emergency and Critical Care service, this position will provide complementary leadership coverage alongside the existing LVT Manager of ECC.  The addition of a second manager will expand leadership capacity for proactive oversight, improve our responsiveness to staff and clinical needs, and strengthen leadership presence and operational consistency across all shifts. 

Structured overlap between ECC managers, including scheduled collaboration on Wednesdays, will facilitate continuity of projects, coordinated decision-making, and alignment of departmental priorities, and allow management to spend more time on the floor. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Purpose and Contributions of the Position 

Through this role, the AMC ECC Nursing Services will: 

• Deliver exemplary, coordinated nursing and technical patient care aligned with AMC’s mission and core values.
• Partner with ECC team members and medical staff to continuously improve the quality and safety of patient care within the department and across AMC.
• Provide exceptional internal and external customer service in all interactions.
• Support and lead quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives within ECC services.
• Ensure staffing levels and operational workflows appropriately support patient care demands. 

Major strategic responsibilities and challenges 

• Promote and model the mission, values, and professional standards of the Animal Medical Center.
• Assist in the development, planning, and implementation of short- and long-term departmental goals, including staff and departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
• Serve as a client and patient advocate, ensuring clear communication and efficient operations from the perspective of pets and their families.
• Collaborate with the LVT Director of ECC, LVT Manager of ECC, and clinical staff to develop, evaluate, and improve policies, protocols, and quality standards for ECC nursing and technical services, ensuring compliance with national standards and state regulatory requirements.
• Optimize patient flow and throughput across the Emergency Service and Intensive Care Unit.
• Lead initiatives supporting ICU and Emergency Service nursing care while proactively addressing workload balance, staff wellness, and burnout mitigation.
• Provide feedback and consultation to the ECC Director regarding nursing service performance, operational challenges, and personnel concerns.
• Foster strong interdisciplinary collaboration among nursing services, veterinarians, and other departments  
• Work closely with section heads and medical staff to support clinical excellence and organizational goals.
• Serve as a visible role model for professionalism, teamwork, and institutional commitment; act as ambassador for ECC within the hospital as an ambassador for the institution within the larger veterinary community. 

Major operational responsibilities and challenges 

• Plan, coordinate, and oversee day-to-day nursing and technical operations within the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Service.
• Develop and maintain ECC support staff schedules, utilizing real-time problem-solving to ensure appropriate coverage and operational continuity.
• Assist with payroll as needed
• Serve as a working supervisor, providing direct clinical support as an LVT approximately 60% of the time, delivering patient care while mentoring and coaching staff in real time.
• Monitor and support the consistent delivery of high-quality nursing and technical care.
• Facilitate weekly staff forums to promote open communication, collaborative problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee ordering, maintenance, and inventory management for patient care equipment, medications, instruments, and supplies, ensuring readiness and compliance with sterilization and maintenance standards.
• Evaluate equipment needs and provide recommendations for capital and supply purchases to support efficiency and patient care improvements.
• Coordinate nursing and technical care processes from patient admission through discharge to ensure efficient and high-quality care delivery.
• Lead, mentor, and evaluate ECC staff, ensuring appropriate scheduling, time management, and regulatory compliance.
• Participate in recruitment, interviewing, and selection of ECC support staff.
• In collaboration with the LVT Director of ECC, support orientation, training, and continuing education initiatives for ECC nursing staff and regional LVTs and assistants.
• Address and assist in resolving service, quality, and workplace concerns raised by staff, clients, or through reporting systems such as Navex.
• Support the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedural protocols to enhance quality and safety.
• Assist in responsible management of departmental financial resources, including verification of charge capture, appropriate resource utilization, and monitoring of supplies and staffing allocations.
• Participate in committees and complete additional departmental or institutional projects as assigned. 

Essential Qualifications 

• Ability to lead inpatient and outpatient veterinary nursing teams in a progressive specialty hospital environment.
• Excellent organizational skills
• Abiility to communicate clearly and constructively in both written and verbal formats and utilize common elements of Microsoft office suite.
• Confidence in working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, committees, and workgroups.
• Mastery of ECC technical skills, with ability to instruct others.
• Competence in the delivery of  meaningful and constructive performance feedback.
• Ability to maintain situational awareness and clinical prioritization in a fast-paced emergency environment, balancing multiple responsibilities while maintaining attention to detail and patient safety.

Education and Experience:  

• NYS veterinary technician’s license
• Bachelor’s Degree and/or VTS preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as an LVT in a veterinary specialty environment, with high proficiency in respectful patient handling, monitoring, supportive therapy, treatments, and advanced nursing procedures
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a veterinary leadership/supervisory capacity, with exceptional capacity to communicate professionally and effectively with clients, colleagues, and referring veterinarians.
• Proven ability to lead veterinary clinical and technical staff in a healthcare environment
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred

The LVT Director of OR is part of the hospital clinical service team who oversees operations and provides strategic leadership and provides organization, direction, management and evaluation of patient care services for the Surgery department. The Director is responsible for process improvement activities and reporting of key performance indicators. 

List duties and responsibilities: 

• Responsible for the clinical, operational and financial management of the surgery operating rooms, prep, & recovery
• Develops action plans and reports outcomes to the Senior LVT Director of Perioperative Services
• Budgetary or fiscal accountability and is responsible 24 hours a day for the ongoing effective operation of units
• Partner with the hospital leadership team to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs, staff development and career ladders ensure meeting of national standards and state regulatory requirements and give input to strategic decisions related to clinical nursing staff development.
• Have insight into day-to-day operations of the surgery department, including patient/LVT ratios and scheduling to improve flow of the surgery unit, patient care and the day-to-day operations
• Mentor and guide surgery LVT Managers, Team Leaders, and Lead Technicians to ensure excellence in hospitals’ functionality
• Act as a liaison between clinical staff and Senior LVT Director of Perioperative Services
• Responsible for the overall supervision of OR staff, post anesthesia care unit, and Pre-Op/Ambulatory Care
• Oversees the unit’s operation to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of care and to maximize patient, physician, and employee satisfaction
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accrediting agencies
• Must have strong knowledge of all aspects of Operating Room Services and patient throughput including scheduling, operating room, surgical equipment, ambulatory surgery, endoscopy, pain management, PACU, OR, and central sterile processing, and other areas as applicable
