About the Team

Our infrastructure teams build and operate the backend systems that power Amplitude's products at massive scale — handling more than 1 trillion events per month. We work on the systems that move, store, transform, and serve customer data: real-time and batch ingestion, identity resolution, data import and export connectors, privacy and compliance, and the operational reliability of everything in between.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll take on complex infrastructure challenges: designing for extreme throughput, optimizing for millisecond latencies, and building resilient systems that run with close to zero downtime. About The Role & Team

The Data Warehouse team builds the systems that connect Amplitude to the broader data ecosystem — import connectors that bring data in from external platforms (Snowflake, Azure Blob Storage, S3, Databricks, and more), and export infrastructure that pushes data back out to the tools customers already use. We also own the configuration layer that manages the lifecycle of those connections and credentials.

As a Software Engineer II on the Data Warehouse team, you'll help build and scale the systems that power these integrations. About the Role & Team

Every AI insight, every experiment, every cohort at Amplitude starts with a query. Our in-house OLAP engine, Nova, processes trillions of events in real time — turning raw behavioral data into fast, trustworthy answers that power decisions for thousands of product teams worldwide.

We’re entering a world where AI agents don’t just assist product teams — they ship features, run experiments, and make prioritization calls autonomously. What makes that possible is agents’ ability to verify their work against real product data continuously. That makes Nova the critical infrastructure in the loop, and as non-stop agents become the main source of queries, the demand on Nova’s throughput, correctness, and operational rigor grows dramatically.

We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer who wants to go deep on both the engine internals and the infrastructure underneath it. You’ll work across the full stack of a modern OLAP system — query planning and execution, columnar storage and encoding, distributed compute, caching, and cloud infrastructure — while driving meaningful improvements to performance, cost-efficiency, and reliability at scale. You’ll influence technical direction through your work, your design reviews, and your mentorship of other engineers on a team of ~10.

This role is ideal for someone who finds real satisfaction in making a complex distributed system faster, cheaper, and more reliable — and who wants to do that work on a system that directly powers the product experience for thousands of customers.

What You’ll Do

Build and evolve core query engine infrastructure 

• Work across Nova's query execution engine and distributed compute layer: query planning, columnar storage formats, encoding and compression, caching, and cluster-level resource management.
• Design and implement new capabilities as Nova expands to support more warehouse-imported data types, such as metrics, profiles, and dimensions.
• Design for high-throughput automated query workloads — as AI agents become a primary source of queries, ensure Nova’s architecture supports sustained, concurrent, and programmatic query patterns at scale.

Drive cost and performance at scale

• Own and execute projects that materially reduce infrastructure cost — compute, storage, network, and memory — while maintaining or improving latency and throughput.
• Profile and optimize JVM performance: GC tuning, memory management, concurrency, and data layout decisions that compound at our scale.
• Build guardrails and observability to catch expensive or pathological queries before they impact the system.

Improve reliability and operational excellence

• Strengthen Nova’s reliability posture: identify systemic failure modes, drive durable fixes, and raise the bar on how we detect and respond to production issues.
• Participate in on-call rotation to root-cause incidents and turn one-off fixes into architectural improvements.
• Contribute to capacity planning, safe rollout practices, and the operational tooling that keeps Nova healthy.

Influence through technical leadership

• Lead the design and execution of multi-month projects that improve Nova’s architecture, performance, or capabilities.
• Contribute to technical direction through design docs, architecture discussions, and code reviews — helping the team make principled tradeoffs.
• Mentor senior engineers on distributed systems thinking, production debugging, and system design.
• Collaborate with Product, Middleware, Data Pipeline, and other engineering teams to ensure Nova’s capabilities translate into customer value.

Who You Are

You are an experienced systems engineer who:

• Gets energy from working deep inside a complex distributed system — understanding how data flows through it, where the bottlenecks are, and how to make it meaningfully better.
• Has built or significantly extended an OLAP engine, columnar database, query processor, or large-scale data processing system — not just operated one.
• Thinks about cost, performance, and reliability as interconnected concerns, not separate workstreams.
• Communicates clearly about technical tradeoffs and earns influence through the quality of your work and ideas, not through title.
• Finds it natural to help other engineers level up — through pairing, design reviews, or just being the person who explains the “why” behind a system’s design.

Qualifications

Requirements

• 7+ years of industry experience in backend or infrastructure engineering, with depth in distributed data systems.
• Hands-on experience building or extending analytical/OLAP systems — query engines, columnar storage, large-scale data processing frameworks, or equivalent.
• Track record of driving significant cost optimization on cloud infrastructure at scale (compute, storage, network).
• Strong computer science fundamentals: distributed systems (partitioning, replication, consistency, failover), data structures and algorithms, concurrency and multi-threading, performance optimization.
• Production experience with modern cloud infrastructure — AWS (S3, DynamoDB, EC2), Kafka, Redis/ElastiCache, Kubernetes, Terraform — or strong equivalents.
• Proficiency in Java, C++, or Python.
• Demonstrated technical influence beyond your immediate team: leading design discussions, driving cross-team alignment, mentoring engineers.

Nice to Have

• Experience with specific OLAP or query engine systems: Druid, ClickHouse, Presto/Trino, BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar.
• Deep JVM expertise — GC tuning, profiling, memory optimization at production scale.
• Experience with columnar data formats and encodings (Arrow, Parquet, ORC, or custom formats).
• Familiarity with product analytics, experimentation platforms, or event-driven data systems.
• Contributions to open-source data infrastructure projects or published work in the data systems space.

About The Role & Team

The Data Management team is building the Trust Engine that powers the entire product. We are moving beyond simple data entry to architecting a self-healing, intelligent data ecosystem.

As a member of the team, you will contribute to the technical vision for how customers define, govern, and trust their data at massive scale. You will help design and build systems that govern the data lifecycle, including complex ingestion planning, semantic enrichment, and data observability — spanning backend infrastructure, APIs, and the product surfaces customers interact with directly.

You will be at the forefront of transforming data governance from a manual chore into an automated, AI-driven infrastructure that powers our 'Ask AI' and Data Assistant capabilities. You are helping solve the hardest problem in analytics: proving that the data is right.

The team is fast moving and you will be expected to iterate quickly and own, drive and achieve alignment on a variety of projects ranging from new product features to best practices and scalability of our codebase & infrastructure.

As a Senior Engineer, you will:

• Ship meaningful product end‑to‑end. Take ownership of well-scoped features and system improvements that measurably improve data quality, reliability, and the customer experience — from design through delivery.
• Contribute to technical direction. Participate actively in design discussions, propose solutions to complex problems, and help define patterns and practices that raise the quality bar for the team.
• Uphold operational excellence. Instrument the services you build, contribute to SLO definitions, respond to incidents, and improve the reliability of systems you own.
• Build for scale and correctness. Contribute to ingestion and governance workflows with an eye toward throughput, latency, and correctness — applying appropriate caching, testing, and resilience patterns.
• Build the foundations for trusted data. Work on capabilities such as a shared data health evaluation framework and APIs, event/property observability (anomalies, schema drift), safe clean‑up workflows, and metadata ingestion — often in collaboration with AI foundations, Pipeline/Query, and Go-to-market teams.
• Expand beyond events. Help architect support for non-event data models — including entities, metrics, and dimensional data — so customers can govern their full data ecosystem within a unified taxonomy experience.
• Pioneer session replay–driven taxonomy. Contribute to using session replay signals to automatically surface untracked interactions, propose new events and properties, and close instrumentation gaps — turning passive recordings into an active, intelligent taxonomy builder.
• Own fullstack delivery. Design and ship features spanning backend services, data pipelines, and the React/TypeScript product surfaces customers use daily.
• Partner across functions. Collaborate with Product, Design, and other engineering teams (e.g., Analytics, Experiment, Ingestion/Query, Session Replay) and engage with customers and account teams to ground decisions in real needs.
• Grow and help others grow. Participate in design and code reviews, share knowledge, and invest in your own development and that of teammates.

You'll be a great addition to the team if you:

• Strong fullstack engineering background. Experience owning and delivering features that span backend services and user-facing product, including APIs and interactive UI in distributed, microservices architectures.
• Fullstack proficiency. Solid skills in JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js and React/frontend frameworks) and/or Python, plus experience with AWS and infrastructure tooling.
• Operational mindset. Experience with observability (metrics/logs/traces), automated testing, and CI/CD — and a habit of treating reliability as part of the job, not an afterthought.
• Customer focus. Ability to connect your work to customer outcomes and use data to validate that what you shipped actually helped.
• Engineering principles in action. Demonstrated Bias for Action, Impact > Effort prioritization, Technical Ownership, and investment in your own and your team's development.
• Clear communicator. Comfortable collaborating across stakeholders and articulating technical tradeoffs concisely.

About the Role & Team

Every AI insight, every experiment, every cohort at Amplitude starts with a query. Our in-house OLAP engine, Nova, processes trillions of events in real time — turning raw behavioral data into fast, trustworthy answers that power decisions for thousands of product teams worldwide.

We’re entering a world where AI agents don’t just assist product teams — they ship features, run experiments, and make prioritization calls autonomously. What makes that possible is agents’ ability to verify their work against real product data continuously. That makes Nova the critical infrastructure in the loop, and as non-stop agents become the main source of queries, the demand on Nova’s throughput, correctness, and operational rigor grows dramatically.

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Query team through this inflection point. You’ll own the vision and roadmap for one of Amplitude’s most critical infrastructure pillars, lead a high-performing team of engineers, and make the strategic calls that balance today’s reliability with tomorrow’s ambition.

What You’ll Do

• Set the direction for the Query platform — define the roadmap, make priorities explicit, and align engineering, product, and cross-functional partners behind a clear plan.
• Lead and grow a team of ~10 engineers, partnering with your tech lead to define Nova's technical direction while coaching, developing, and scaling the team through hiring and performance feedback.
• Drive platform evolution across the query engine’s core layers — storage, compute and query execution — to define Amplitude’s next generation of analytics.
• Guide the design and operation of large-scale distributed systems, including load management, fault tolerance, capacity planning, and on-call practices. You own the SLOs g, and cost efficiency.
• Report to the Director of Data and partner across Product, Data Warehouse, Data Pipeline, Middleware, AI, and Support to co-define Amplitude's data strategy and shape how customers query and explore their data.
• Engage directly on major customer onboardings and escalations, turning customer learnings into durable platform improvements.

• Hands-on experience with distributed data systems — OLAP databases, data warehouses, stream processing, or large-scale storage — and modern cloud infrastructure (AWS S3, DynamoDB, Kafka, Redis/ElastiCache, Kubernetes, Terraform).
• A track record of meaningfully improving reliability, latency, or cost efficiency for a production system with clear SLOs and incident accountability.
• Strong communication skills and experience partnering with Product and cross-functional stakeholders to define roadmaps and measurable outcomes.
