Civil/Track - Project Engineer
We are seeking to hire a licensed Project Engineer in our Civil/Track Design department, part of our thriving Railroad Services group. In this role, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, collaborate with seasoned Project Managers, Engineers, and Technicians, and contribute to projects for Class I, short line, and commuter rail clients. As a Track Engineer at Benesch, you will play a pivotal role in designing and engineering various rail and transit systems, including light rail (LRT), heavy rail (HRT), and commuter, freight. You will work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering environment, closely coordinating with design teams to deliver innovative solutions for our clients.
Benesch’s Railroad Division is made up of highly skilled rail professionals, many of whom are former employees of operating railroads. This firsthand experience working to design and maintain active rail systems uniquely equips our team to develop innovative solutions to a wide variety of rail projects.
Location
This position offers a hybrid work schedule with the flexibility to work from the following offices that host a Railroad-Track team and focus on Railroad-Track business development: Omaha, NE; Milwaukee, WI; Chicago, IL; Naperville, IL; Charlotte, NC; and Raleigh, NC.
The Impact You Will Have
- Serve as a track design engineer on projects of various scales.
- Provide essential support to track and civil discipline leads in major infrastructure projects.
- Conduct quantity take-offs for all track corridor components, encompassing both track and civil elements.
- Participate in the development of technical specifications.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional design teams.
- Offer valuable support to Project Managers (PM)
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) plus 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- 5 years of industry experience working on rail and transit projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain it within 1 year.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley InRoads/OpenRoads/OpenRail.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley InRoads/OpenRoads/OpenRail.
- Experience working on Railroad projects #LI-AG1
Position Pay Range
$95,000 - $125,000

On-Call Field Inspector - Transportation Construction Engineering
Become an on-call Construction Site Inspector with the Benesch team. In this position, you will play a crucial role in supervising construction inspections throughout the United States. The ideal candidate should possess 2+ years of practical experience in field inspections related to Railroad infrastructure projects.
Benesch’s Railroad Division is made up of highly skilled rail professionals, many of whom are former employees of operating railroads. This firsthand experience working on designing and maintaining active rail systems uniquely equips our team to develop innovative solutions to a wide variety of rail projects.
Location
This position is field-based, with work conducted from a designated field office and requiring travel to various project sites. Preferred candidates should reside in one of the states where projects are located, including Arkansas, Arizona, California, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Texas, to facilitate site visits.
The Impact You Will Have
- Daily oversight of contractors' day-to-day work.
- Enforce contractor responsibilities and ensure strict compliance with contract specifications.
- Accurately measure and validate contractor quantities in alignment with contract terms.
- Generate comprehensive daily construction reports to monitor progress and document daily undertakings.
- Monitor quality assurance documentation to verify conformity with quality standards.
- Maintain daily Field Book entries in line with documentation requisites. This includes recording tasks, workforce, and equipment usage and capturing visual progress updates and any issues encountered.
- Track the advancement of construction activities to produce detailed work reports for field orders.
- Participate in progress meetings to provide updates when necessary.
- Collaborate closely with Resident Project managers to facilitate the resolution of technical challenges.
What you will need
- Minimum 2 years of practical experience working as a field inspector on infrastructure projects
- Concrete Structure/Bridge Inspection Experience: A strong plus.
- Eager to learn and display a proactive approach to new tasks and acquire additional skills.
- Must be capable of collaborating effectively within a team-oriented environment.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must be willing and able to travel to various project site locations across the Midwest US region. #LI-MM1

Project Manager - Railroad Civil Track Design
Benesch is growing its national Railroad Division, and we are looking for a Project Manager to help lead the continued expansion of our Civil Track team. The Civil Track team focuses on delivering complex rail infrastructure projects, including mainline and corridor track improvements, rail yard and terminal expansions, siding extensions, industrial track programs, and fast-paced design-build initiatives that strengthen rail networks nationwide.
As a Project Manager for the Civil Track team, you will lead multidisciplinary rail projects, manage key client relationships, mentor engineering staff, and support business development efforts that help grow Benesch’s rail presence. Approximately 25% of this role focuses on relationship-building, proposals, and market growth. This is more than a delivery role. It is an opportunity to help shape a high-performing rail team while supporting major freight and passenger rail clients. With a strong backlog and rising demand, this position is critical to advancing project delivery, expanding client partnerships, and driving long term growth.
Location
This position offers hybrid flexibility in the following offices that support Railroad Track operations and business development: Omaha, NE; Milwaukee, WI; Chicago, IL; Naperville, IL; Charlotte, NC; Raleigh, NC
Fully remote arrangements may be considered for highly experienced candidates, though in-office collaboration is preferred when managing direct team members.
The Impact You Will Have
- Lead railroad track design and infrastructure projects from planning through design and into construction support
- Manage scope, schedule, and budget while ensuring high-quality delivery. Serve as a seller-doer by building client relationships, identifying opportunities, and supporting proposal development
- Collaborate with Project Managers and Group Leaders across the national Railroad Division to balance resources and workload
- Mentor and guide engineering staff ranging from junior engineers to senior technical professionals
- Support major railroad clients while helping expand relationships with short-line and regional railroads
- Represent Benesch at industry events, conferences, and client meetings
What We Are Looking For
- Licensed Professional Engineer
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
- 12+ years of industry experience with at least 8 years focused on rail track design
- Proficiency with MicroStation and Inroads or OpenRoads or OpenRail
- Experience managing scope, schedule, and budget on complex projects
- Strong client-facing experience with established industry relationships
- Experience supporting or leading proposal development

Railroad Public Projects Manager – Real Estate & Contracts
Benesch is in search of a highly motivated, detail-oriented Real Estate Public Projects Manager to support and manage public and private projects. This role blends real estate contract management with railroad operations, focusing on compliance, risk mitigation, and project execution.
The ideal candidate will have 3 or more years of experience in real estate or contract management, preferably within the transportation or infrastructure sector. A strong understanding of agreements, public-private partnerships, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations is essential. Proficiency in contract management software and knowledge of railroad operations are highly desirable.
Location:
This position is located at our Omaha, NE office. Our Omaha team enjoys a hybrid work schedule and a collaborative atmosphere when in the office.

The Impact You Will Have
- Support Benesch’s Railroad team by managing day-to-day real estate and track agreements, including public projects and industrial track portfolios
- Draft, review, and process engineering agreements, lease and license agreements, service letters, and supplemental documents
- Assist with the development of engineering agreements, supplemental agreements, master agreements and other related documents
- Ensure all agreements meet railroad authority requirements and comply with applicable regulations
- Coordinate with clients, municipalities, railroads, legal teams, and internal project managers to move agreements forward
- Identify active tracks without current agreements and work with internal teams to close documentation gaps
- Research track ownership, usage, and maintenance responsibilities to support contract accuracy and risk reduction
- Maintain detailed records of all active and historic agreements using systems like and Benesch’s internal platforms
- Ensure consistency and accuracy of data across agreements, billing, and internal reporting systems
- Prepare and issue standard invoices, follow up on unpaid rents, and ensure billing aligns with contract terms
- Assist with budget tracking and revenue forecasting tied to track leases and public project agreements
What We Are Looking For
- HS Diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in business, Real Estate, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in real estate, public infrastructure, or contract management.
- Strong knowledge of real estate documents, public infrastructure agreements, or railroad contracts.
- Familiarity with regulations and procedures for public-private transportation projects.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; knowledge of contract management tools is a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Map interpretation, document research, and database fluency preferred. #LI-AG1
