The Sr. Metrology Supervisor provides frontline leadership and functional oversight for the Jacksonville Calibration Department, supporting approximately 19,000 annual calibrations at a regulated medical device manufacturing site. This role is accountable for safe, compliant, timely, and technically sound calibration of equipment, instrumentation, measurement systems, and related assets and serves as the department point of contact during audits.

The position leads day-to-day execution, workforce capability, calibration compliance, vendor performance, process governance, and continuous improvement. The Senior Supervisor partners with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Metrology, PM & Reliability, Procurement, Finance, external service providers, and site leadership to maintain calibration readiness and reduce operational and compliance risk.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage the Calibration Department in support of approximately 19,000 annual calibrations at a regulated medical device manufacturing site and serve as the department point of contact during audits.

  • Lead, coach, develop, and hold the Metrology and Calibration Services team accountable for safety, quality, compliance, technical execution, customer service, and results.
  • Plan, prioritize, schedule, execute, document, and close calibration work in accordance with approved procedures, quality-system requirements, site standards, and established due dates.
  • Maintain visibility to calibration compliance, overdue and upcoming work, resource capacity, equipment availability, service demand, and business risk; escalate and resolve barriers promptly.
  • Lead nonconformance investigations, corrective and preventive actions, audit action plans, risk assessments, process validations, equipment qualifications, root cause analyses, and out-of-tolerance evaluations.
  • Ensure calibration requirements are defined and integrated into equipment lifecycle, maintenance, change control, qualification, validation, and asset-management processes.
  • Develop inspection and test methods for Critical to Quality assets, establish departmental policies, and perform measurement system analyses to meet FDA, ISO, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, standardize, and improve calibration procedures, workflows, documentation practices, controls, escalation pathways, and performance routines.
  • Evaluate calibration methods and practices to improve accuracy, reliability, turnaround time, efficiency, compliance, and service to Manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with site leaders and cross-functional partners to execute large, complex projects that drive innovation, increase organizational capability, and reduce quality events.
  • Coordinate with external suppliers to develop new test methods, ensure specifications are met, maintain existing equipment, and source new equipment.
  • Lead calibration vendor strategy, including technical evaluation, scope definition, qualification support, sourcing partnership, service expectations, performance review, documentation quality, responsiveness, and cost effectiveness.
  • Evaluate insource-versus-outsource opportunities using technical capability, compliance, capacity, cost, risk, and business-continuity considerations.
  • Apply Lean, Six Sigma, and statistical methodologies to drive continuous improvement, implement statistical process controls, and perform gage repeatability and reproducibility studies.
  • Establish and monitor performance indicators for execution, compliance, workload, recurring issues, vendor performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in pressure, temperature, flow, mass, dimensional, torque, force, time, illuminance, current, voltage, and optical measurements.
  • Support personnel development by establishing team goals, mentoring employees, developing site-wide training, delivering hands-on training, cross-training personnel, and closing technical skill gaps.
  • Partner effectively across Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, PM & Reliability, EHS, Procurement, Finance, and other site functions.
  • Promote a safety-first, inclusive, accountable, collaborative, and high-performing work environment consistent with Our Credo and Johnson & Johnson leadership expectations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support business and site needs.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, Technology, Business, or a related discipline; equivalent directly relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • In lieu of the preferred degree, substantial directly relevant experience may be considered when it demonstrates the technical depth, leadership capability, judgment, and business knowledge necessary to perform the responsibilities of the role. The final equivalency determination is subject to Talent Acquisition and Human Resources review.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Approximately six (6) to eight (8) years of directly relevant calibration, metrology, instrumentation, measurement-system, or regulated technical operations experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading employees, technical teams, projects, or functional workstreams, including priority setting, coaching, performance accountability, and delivery of results.
  • Demonstrated experience with calibration execution, documentation, technical practices, process improvement, and vendor sourcing or management.
  • Experience working within a regulated manufacturing, medical device, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, laboratory, or similarly controlled environment.
  • Strong knowledge of calibration principles, metrology, instrumentation, measurement standards, traceability, tolerances, calibration intervals, documentation, and out-of-tolerance evaluation.
  • Working knowledge of FDA, ISO, GMP, data-integrity, quality-system, EHS, and site requirements applicable to calibration and equipment control.
  • Ability to lead people, translate priorities into action, allocate resources, manage competing needs, and reinforce accountability.
  • Ability to identify process gaps, assess risk, solve complex problems, make sound decisions, and drive actions through completion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage technicians, individual contributors, vendors, functional partners, and site leadership.
  • Ability to build productive cross-functional relationships and influence outcomes across organizational boundaries.
  • Ability to analyze workload, compliance, performance, cost, and vendor data and translate findings into practical improvements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and relevant calibration, maintenance, asset-management, or quality systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical conduct, safety, quality, compliance, respect for people, and Credo-based leadership.

Preferred:

  • Experience with calibration program governance, compliance metrics, audit readiness, investigations, corrective actions, and quality-system processes.
  • Experience sourcing, qualifying, coordinating, or managing external calibration service providers.
  • Experience developing or improving calibration procedures, workflows, systems, and technical practices.
  • Experience with computerized calibration management, maintenance management, asset management, or electronic quality systems.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, continuous improvement, people leadership, or project management training or certification.
