Temporary Advanced Educational Support - Behaviour Support Team

We are excited to have a Temporary Advanced Educational Support opportunity available within the Division starting immediately.

Lethbridge School Division is committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment for all students that embraces diversity while functioning in a dynamic, innovative, and fast paced environment.

Our Division is a proud neighbor to the largest First Nation reserve area in Canada which is called Kainai Nation. We are fortunate to learn from Indigenous communities and are committed to enhancing our understanding of the truths of our past so we can continue to move towards reconciliation.

To help support student success, we are looking for a flexible, empathetic, optimistic, and patient individual to work as part of a dynamic team. Advanced Educational Support (AES) personnel work as members of the school-based learning team to assist classroom and learning support teachers in providing specialized supports to students with complex learning needs. AES will have specialized skills, training and/or experience in the areas of braille, sign language, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ESL, FASD or advanced behavior supports.

What will you work?

30.50 hours/week

Monday to Friday

This position follows the assigned Advanced Educational Support calendar and affords the successful candidate to have some school breaks off.

Advanced Educational Support Positions are right for you if you:

  • are able to remain calm in extremely stressful situations
  • have a positive, flexible attitude
  • have problem-solving skills
  • possess decision-making skills
  • have an interest in helping people resolve problems
  • have specialized skills, training and/or experience in an identified area (Braille, American Sign Language, Autism Spectrum Disorder, FASD, Advanced Behavioral Support)
  • can work independently and as part of a team

The Coordinator of Inclusive Education determines assignments. You will work as a member of the school-based team in your assigned school or as part of a division team supporting schools. If Division needs change, the Coordinator of Inclusive Education will reassign you to another school or position helping support students with complex learning needs.

What will you do?
As part of the Behaviour Support Team, the AES will work closely with the Behaviour Support Teacher, classroom teachers, Educational Assistants and Learning Support Teachers to gain an understanding of student behaviour and determine appropriate responses. The AES will help with pro-active approaches to supporting positive behaviours in school and assist staff with a range of strategies for managing challenging behaviours. Following observations of students interacting within the school/classroom environment, the AES will work with the Behaviour Support Teacher to make recommendations and collaborate with the school-based team to implement and review strategies.

An AES is required to provide supports and services in a flexible, coordinated and effective way, respecting the expertise of all team members. The AES will work as part of a team and independently to implement programming and supports. This includes working with school staff in meeting the needs of students and promoting their well-being in a way that values the dignity of the individual and promotes choice, respect, participation and independence.

As assignments can change based on school and division needs, AES must be prepared to help support programming goals that focus on behaviour, academics, communication and social skills as well as attend to the personal care needs of students.

Lethbridge School Division makes every effort to ensure staff and student safety, but not every unsafe behavior on the part of students can be anticipated. Students may display challenging/impulsive behaviors including hitting, kicking, spitting, biting, throwing items, poor attention, and difficulty making transitions.

Please note that only those selected for further consideration will be contacted regarding an interview.
