Job Description Summary
The Texas A&M AgriLife Institute for Advancing Health Through Agriculture, IHA, is the world’s first academic institute to bring together precision nutrition, responsive agriculture, and social and behavioral research to reduce diet-related chronic disease and lower health care costs in a way that supports producers and the environment.
The Part-Time Fleet Driver, under direction, supports the Fleet team with the safe, reliable, and timely movement and care of vehicles, research materials, supplies, and equipment. This position assists with the transportation and operational readiness of IHA’s vehicle fleet, which includes cars, SUVs, and 25ft RVs and 40ft RVs, which function as mobile clinics. This position reports to the Fleet Manager.
Essential Duties/Tasks
- Operates organization vehicles safely and responsibly while following all applicable traffic and safety regulations.
- Picks up and delivers research materials, supplies, equipment, and documents according to established schedules, including Fridays and Saturdays.
- Maintains accurate delivery and pickup records.
- Inspects vehicles and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
- Handles laboratory materials carefully and follows applicable procedures for transporting sensitive or temperature-controlled items.
- Communicates professionally with laboratory staff, vendors, and other personnel.
- Maintains confidentiality and follows all laboratory and organizational policies.
- Assists with loading, unloading, and organizing items as needed.
- Keeps vehicles washed and clean.
- Performs basic upkeep of the RVs including emptying the trash, sweeping/mopping the floor, and dusting/disinfecting surfaces, etc.
- General handy person duties as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
- High school graduation or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Driver’s License.
Required Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrate the ability to operate several types of vehicles, including RVs, and maneuver safely through congested traffic conditions, adverse weather and road conditions.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of RVs and trailers and similar large mobile vehicles.
- Knowledge of maintenance of RV, cars, and SUVs.
Physical Requirements:
- Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
- Ability to drive up to 8 hours a day.
- Requires the ability to stoop, bend, lift, etc.
- Ability to lift/move heavy objects and materials up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to exert light force.
- Ability to use a ladder.
- Ability to perform manual tasks effectively in adverse environmental conditions.
- Requires dexterity to operate hand and power tools.
