The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a talented Assistant General Counsel (Lending) for our USAA corporate headquarters location.
As an Assistant General Counsel (Lending) you will be responsible for providing legal counsel to Mortgage and Home Equity line of business unit leadership within USAA. You will proactively engage business clients to better understand USAA's strategic and operational objectives, identify and analyze legal issues, and effectively communicate legal advice. You will engage and collaborate with internal stakeholders within business units, risk and Legal and Advisory Services organizations and work independently on matters of significance to USAA.
We offer a flexible work environment that requires individuals to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Charlotte, NC, or Tampa, FL.
Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
What you'll do:
Serve as a legal advisor for mortgage origination, mortgage servicing, and home equity lending, and advise business and risk partners on applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
Provide legal support for new product development, strategic initiatives, regulatory examinations, and significant operational changes affecting mortgage and home equity businesses.
Collaborate across USAA and Legal and Advisory Services to ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
Proactively monitor and analyze changes in laws, regulations and industry and advise appropriate organizational leadership of such changes in a timely manner.
Lead complex legal assignments with a high level of business impact and deliver appropriate solutions.
Effectively communicate with stakeholders and varying levels of leadership in both verbal and written forms.
Engage and manage outside counsel.
Assist more senior attorneys in providing advice and counsel on highly complex matters and serve as a resource for less experienced team members.
What you have:
Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
Licensed and in good standing to practice law in one state or a territory of the USA.
6 years of relevant experience as a practicing attorney.
Ability to effectively communicate legal advice to varying levels of business leadership.
What sets you apart:
Four plus years of legal experience supporting mortgage and home equity lending businesses, including in-house counsel experience within a large bank or financial services organization.
Prior experience partnering with business and risk management teams on regulatory, operational, and governance matters.
US military experience gained through military service or gained as a military spouse / domestic partner.
Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $143,320 - $273,930.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
