Summary

The Software Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining software systems that support Shift4’s products. This role focuses on implementing reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions while collaborating closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers. The engineer contributes to multiple phases of the development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, and deployment, while continuously improving technical skills and contributing to engineering best practices.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product and engineering leaders to design, build, and enhance software solutions that deliver measurable customer and business impact.
• Develop and maintain internal applications through hands-on coding, testing, debugging, and deployment of maintainable and reusable software.
• Contribute to system design discussions and implement technical solutions aligned with established architectural standards.
• Work within an agile development process, participating in two-week sprints with the goal of delivering release-ready software each cycle.
• Integrate applications with backend services, APIs, and cloud-based infrastructure.
• Operate independently when required, exercising sound judgment in decision-making and ensuring proper documentation of technical designs and workflows.
• Write clean, well-documented, and testable code following team coding standards and best practices.
• Participate in code reviews to maintain quality and consistency across the codebase.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years of professional software development experience.
• Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, React Native, and related libraries (e.g., Redux, React Navigation).
• Experience integrating with backend systems (REST APIs or equivalent) and working with cloud services such as AWS or similar platforms.
• Experience with version control systems, particularly Git.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release management practices.
• Understanding of mobile performance considerations and debugging techniques.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical technical solutions.
• Motivation to take on increasing responsibility and ownership within an agile development team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Understanding of modern web application development using TypeScript with frameworks such as React or Ember.
• Experience working with AWS-hosted backends and databases.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.

Your Experience

• Hands-on experience building complex mobile applications with rich, performant UIs — experience in global consumer-facing products is a strong plus.
• Deep proficiency in Swift; working knowledge of Objective-C and solid object-oriented design principles.
• Strong familiarity with Apple's ecosystem — frameworks, HIG guidelines, and end-to-end App Store submission and maintenance processes.
• Clear understanding of the mobile product lifecycle and comfortable working within Agile teams.

The Role:

Proton is a mobile-first company building an Internet that respects privacy and puts people, not advertisers, first. As an engineer on our Apple team you’ll build and ship features across Proton’s apps on iPhone, iPad and macOS, working closely with product and engineers across the company to define what “great” looks like on Apple platforms. Our codebase is primarily Swift with some Go, and we’re moving to a platform-independent Rust logical core that communicates with Swift via a generic interface, so Rust experience is a strong plus. Quality is central to the role: you’ll contribute to and maintain our testing stack, including unit tests for business logic, stubbed API tests for pseudo-integration, snapshot tests for UI and XCUITest for end-to-end user flows. You’ll join a team that pairs deep technical expertise with an obsession for simple, usable interfaces, shipping privacy-preserving products used by millions.

Purpose of the role:

We are seeking a Director of Engineering to one of our existing or upcoming Products. This role involves setting and executing technical strategy, team management, and working closely with your senior product managers counterparts, to ensure high-velocity delivery of new products.

The team:

This team is part of our VPN department. The team members are spread in different office locations across Europe. They are responsible for raising the quality standards of our native clients on all platforms as well as maintaining, improving and executing test plans. What you will do:

As our iOS Test Automation Engineer, you’ll be the guardian of app quality. You will:

• Design, build, and maintain automated test frameworks and test suites for iOS.

• Integrate test automation into CI/CD pipelines to deliver fast, smooth, and fearless releases.

• Debug, analyze, and triage test failures — helping the team get to the root cause quickly.

The opportunity
The Apple Platforms team is dedicated to developing and maintaining Unity Engine support across Apple’s ecosystem, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS. We work in close collaboration with the Android platform team, together owning and developing features that span mobile platforms. We handle platform specific implementation details and provide a unified solution to create interactive visual content on all supported platforms. This enables our users to focus on bringing their ideas to life without having to worry about technical differences between various platforms. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team. You will have the opportunity to develop, optimize and expand tools used to create the majority of mobile games. You will contribute to team deliverables and collaborate with other engineers.

What you'll be doing

• Maintain and improve existing features
• Design and build new features
• Follow best practices to write clean, cross-platform code, cover functionality with tests, and provide clear documentation
• Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including product, QA, customer support teams, to ensure their requirements are met

What you'll be doing

You'll be responsible for:

• Lead and scale a team of 5+ engineers and organise work towards the product vision
• Work closely with the development team and Product Manager to deliver business value in a timely manner while following and improving upon established quality metrics.
• Orchestrate technical aspects of the product development
• Implement the most suitable development processes (principles, rules) for the team
• Coach the team to learn and apply engineering best practices in various areas starting from UI standards and CI/CD to API design and Secure SDLC
• Continue to form and grow your team – hire and onboard new members, perform training activities, help team members to follow their path for professional growth 
• Solve or escalate issues within and outside the team
• Ensure healthy collaboration with other teams, identify and manage technical and organisational dependencies
• Support an environment of transparency by providing prompt feedback, both gently and honestly

Your Experience

Must have:

• 6+ years of experience in one of the following programming languages: Scala, Java, Kotlin, Objective C/Swift.
• Experience in designing and implementing robust distributed systems
• 4+ years of team management: establishing processes in a cross-functional team, building tech roadmaps, experience in change management
• People management skills – providing one-on-ones, resolving conflicts, creating career development plans, mentoring and growing engineers
• Extensive knowledge of engineering practices and Agile methodologies 

Nice to have:

• Full-stack development experience
• Hands-on experience with DevOps tools and practices
• Outstanding communication skills
• Experience building consumer or client-facing products
• Understanding of A/B testing techniques
