Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default
Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we’ve built the world’s largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar—tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some situations, Proton has literally helped save lives!
We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 500+ team members across 50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it. Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here!
About the role:
The MSA team (Mail Delivery, Spam, and Anti-Abuse) is a multidisciplinary group founded in 2019 to solve complex security challenges across the Proton ecosystem. We build sophisticated systems from scratch that combine human intelligence and machine learning to make tens of millions of real-time or asynchronous decisions daily. Our focus areas include:
Mail delivery and spam prevention

Site reliability and resilience
Over the past few years, our custom systems have:
Reduced spam filter misclassifications by over 70%
Blocked millions of abusive bulk signups
Protected hundreds of thousands of users from account compromises
Mitigated hundreds of DDoS attacks
Recently, we’ve expanded our impact with Proton Sentinel (an AI-human hybrid security program) and Proton CAPTCHA (our own puzzle system to detect and prevent abuse). We’re now scaling our capabilities with agentic AI to enable autonomous threat detection and response.
In 5 years, we’ve grown from 2 engineers to 40+ engineers and analysts across 3 continents, operating 24/7. We’re looking for curious, collaborative, and impact-driven engineers who thrive in a startup environment and want to shape the future of secure AI.
What You Will Do
Design and deploy scalable ML systems using modern MLOps practices, including real-time inference, model monitoring, and automated retraining pipelines.
Architect agentic AI systems capable of autonomous threat detection, adaptive policy enforcement, and self-healing security responses.
Build tools for model development, debugging, and explainability to accelerate iteration and transparency.
Optimize ML workflows for distributed environments to handle large-scale data processing.
Collaborate cross-functionally with security analysts, backend/frontend engineers, and customer support to align technical solutions with user needs.
Advance the state of ML for anti abuse and account security, exploring cutting-edge techniques like adversarial robustness, graph-based anomaly detection, and privacy-preserving AI.
What You Bring
Degree in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, with 2+ years hands-on experience in building and running ML systems.
Production-level ML expertise: You’ve shipped models that handle real-world scale and complexity.
Hands-on experience with LLMs in agentic environments.
Strong software engineering skills: Proficiency in Python, with a solid understanding of backend and server fundamentals.
Statistical rigor: Deep understanding of probability, hypothesis testing, and experimental design.
Experience with adversarial ML or red-teaming ML systems.
Experience working on distributed systems.
Contributions to open-source security/privacy tools.
Knowledge of federated learning, differential privacy, or on-device inference.
Familiarity with graph-based anomaly detection or knowledge graphs.
Technical leadership: Experience owning projects, mentoring peers, and driving technical direction.
Security mindset: Familiarity with abuse patterns, adversarial attacks, or threat intelligence (bonus points!).
Impact at scale: Your work will protect millions of users globally.
Cutting-edge tech: Tackle challenges like agentic AI, real-time threat detection, and privacy-preserving ML.
Collaborative culture: Work with a global team of experts in security, ML, and systems engineering.
Growth opportunities: Lead initiatives, mentor other, and learn across a diverse technology stack
Mission-driven: Contribute to a privacy-first internet where users control their data.

At Proton, we believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of democracy. Since our inception in 2014, founded by a team of scientists from CERN, we have dedicated ourselves to providing free and open-source technology to millions worldwide, ensuring access to privacy, security, and freedom online.
Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, Proton Wallet, and Lumo by Proton. These tools empower individuals and organizations to take control of their personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices, and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk situations.
Proton is a profitable company that does not rely upon VC funding, supporting over 100 million user accounts with a growing team of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence, learning potential, and ambition in our hiring process. Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how business is conducted online.
Hiring at Proton is highly selective, with less than 1% of candidates hired. We believe smaller teams of exceptional talent will always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. You will have the opportunity work with many of the world's top minds in their fields, ranging from former international math and science olympiad winners to chess champions.
We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. Tired of blending into the crowd? Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here!
Lumo is Proton's privacy-first AI assistant that fundamentally reimagines how AI should work - empowering users without exploiting their data. Unlike traditional AI platforms that harvest user conversations for training and profit, Lumo operates with zero-access encryption, keeps no server-side logs, and ensures that conversations remain completely confidential.
Built by the team behind Proton Mail, Proton VPN, and backed by the nonprofit Proton Foundation, Lumo represents a paradigm shift in AI development. We believe the benefits of AI are too great to miss, but the privacy risks of current implementations are too serious to ignore. Lumo is based on open-source language models, operates from Proton's European datacenters, and provides unprecedented transparency in the AI space.
Our Mission: To deliver the full power of artificial intelligence while maintaining user privacy as an uncompromising core principle. We're building an AI that only works for you, not the other way around - where your conversations remain confidential and your data stays fully under your control, never shared, sold, or stolen.
Our Technology: Lumo implements multiple layers of encryption throughout the entire pipeline, from device-to-server communication through to long-term storage, creating a privacy architecture that's simply much stronger than anything else on the market. The platform runs on open-source models including Mistral's Nemo and Nvidia's OpenHands 32B, with full source code transparency.
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Frontend Engineer to join our growing Lumo AI team. You’ll work across all functions of Lumo, turning designs into responsive, fast and reliable interfaces. Your code will shape the day‑to‑day experience of users, making it smoother, clearer, and more enjoyable.
Full Stack Engineering
Create, evolve and sustain high‑performance features that tie together the front‑end and back‑end layers of our modern stack. Ensure every component scales smoothly and integrates cleanly.
You'll be joining a mission-driven team at Proton, trusted by over 100 million people worldwide and owned by the nonprofit Proton Foundation. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of AI by building fullstack infrastructure that proves privacy, performance, and reliability aren't mutually exclusive.
As a Fullstack Applied AI Engineer at Lumo, you'll own the complete technical stack powering privacy-first AI experiences, ensuring millions of users can rely on Lumo for their most sensitive conversations with complete confidence in both AI capabilities and privacy protection.

This role is one of our general tracks. Apply here for all engineering teams at Canonical who work on low-level system technology on autonomous devices across all seniority levels.
We hire careful and conscientious engineers who appreciate the challenge of memory, performance, battery and connectivity constrained code that has to work every time in an unreliable and unforgiving world, on x86, ARM or RISC-V silicon.
Canonical Ubuntu is the leading Linux for software engineers, desktops, cloud and IoT. We bring open source to the world as a high-performance, safe and secure platform for enterprise computing, software engineering, and connected devices.
These smart, connected devices have the potential to transform every industry. Classic Ubuntu – desktop or server – is widely used in embedded systems because of its developer focus and enterprise grade security maintenance. We partner with the world's most prominent silicon companies to optimise Ubuntu on their latest and greatest chips, as well as with major OEMs and ODMs (PC, servers and connected device manufacturers) to ensure that Ubuntu works perfectly on their hardware.
But while classic, ‘deb’ based Ubuntu is ideal for developers, it has too much variability for appliance or connected device environments, where you want to know *exactly* what the state of millions or billions of devices might be. So Canonical builds Ubuntu Core, a fully containerised version of Ubuntu that is mathematically precise and rigorously secure. We are working on additional solutions for even smaller devices.
We have several teams that focus on open source for embedded environments. We hire outstanding Linux software engineers with a passion for open source, innovation, cutting-edge hardware and software technologies in general. You will be expected to make significant contributions through high-quality design and code, and to develop your technical leadership.
These roles include:
At Canonical you will have the opportunity to engage with the broader open source community. We're looking for individuals who can help build a thriving community, contribute to a broad range of technologies, and contribute to the deployment of Ubuntu and Ubuntu Core across the widest range of devices.
Location: we have remote roles open in every time zone.
Based on the first round of interviews we identify specific teams where you might be an excellent fit, and conduct second round interviews with those teams. Our engineers:
We consider geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. We revisit compensation annually (and more often for graduates and associates) to ensure we recognise outstanding performance. In addition to base pay, we offer a performance-driven annual bonus. We provide all team members with additional benefits, which reflect our values and ideals. We balance our programs to meet local needs and ensure fairness globally.
Canonical is a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of the global move to open source. As the company that publishes Ubuntu, one of the most important open source projects and the platform for AI, IoT and the cloud, we are changing the world on a daily basis. We recruit on a global basis and set a very high standard for people joining the company. We expect excellence - in order to succeed, we need to be the best at what we do. Canonical has been a remote-first company since its inception in 2004. Working here is a step into the future, and will challenge you to think differently, work smarter, learn new skills, and raise your game.
We are proud to foster a workplace free from discrimination. Diversity of experience, perspectives, and background create a better work environment and better products. Whatever your identity, we will give your application fair consideration.

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is very widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1200+ colleagues in 80+ countries and very few roles based in offices. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution.
The company is founder led, profitable and growing.
We are hiring an Engineer Director, Devices Software Engineering to drive the strategy and implementation of our next-generation Ubuntu hardware enablement quality. This critical function is part of our mission to transform Linux certification, in partnership with the engineering directors of Ubuntu Enablement and Ubuntu Certification. Our goal is to deliver the world's best long term OS stability commitment on PC, server and IoT hardware.
We believe that Engineering Directors should be outstanding engineers themselves. They should be very comfortable reviewing a patch or a software design spec. They are trusted engineers who understand the importance of a whole-team effort in creating great products, and who enjoy seeing colleagues develop. They should contribute code themselves to set the standard for coding, but know that the code they write is far less significant than their ability to shape the whole team’s direction, focus and delivery. We grow management skills, and train engineers who are interested in soft skills to be managers. Even though this is a director level position, managing managers, we expect Engineering Directors to be outstanding system software engineers with the confidence to lead by example across the full range of activities in their teams. You’ll need to know how to drive testing and benchmarking to improve the clarity in your teams around quality and performance. You’ll also need to be confident to set and defend high expectations of work ethic, consistency, focus and learning.
In this Engineering Director role, you will lead the strategy and the team responsible for quality coordination and integration testing of our software stacks with hardware. We are looking for a quality expert with the ability to establish quality processes from the ground up. The candidate must understand today's PC and ARM IoT hardware, and be excited about the new generation of RISC-V hardware that is on the horizon. They should understand the board and device product lifecycle and know the tools and techniques used to introduce new products. They will work with teams across the company to drive quality improvements through the entire development cycle. This challenging role demands a high degree of technical skill combined with management experience.
Today, most Linux certification is poor quality. Vendors run one set of tests and then declare that 'the hardware is certified'. But Linux is not a static platform. We make many more security fixes in the Linux world than people traditionally made in the proprietary OS world - all of these need to be tested on hardware which has been certified, even if that certification is 'old'. Also, Linux and open source evolve significantly every six months, and even more between major enterprise releases like the Ubuntu LTS versions. During the lifespan of an LTS, new kernel improvements will be available to users, and they want to be sure that their hardware will work. Today's Linux certification programs do not meet the needs of its users, and we want to change that.
Our intention is to deliver continuous quality and certification across the entire portfolio of certified hardware. Once we have enabled and certified a device, we intend to keep testing it to ensure that every single change we deliver to Ubuntu users globally is verified on all the hardware we know about. We also intend to measure energy consumption on a continuous process, as part of our commitment to measure, manage and drive down the carbon footprint of Ubuntu usage around the planet. We are building the world's largest and best-equipped Linux device certification facility in Taipei, which will enable this continuous testing. We are also structuring our renewed partnership and customer agreements to facilitate this process going forward.
We believe that open source is just starting to transform the tech sector and enterprise compute. Our goal is to make open source easier, more reliable and more secure for deployment and development. We strive to be the provider of ‘most software to most companies’. To deliver on that ambition, our engineers are carefully selected from the applicants across the globe. We select for brilliance and motivation to take open source to the next level. Our engineering directors and managers help teams achieve more than they thought they could, and feel proud of the result.
As an Engineering Director at Canonical your primary responsibility is to the teams you lead, to ensure that they measure outcomes, make process improvements, do valuable work, and find career satisfaction at Canonical. Technical leadership is a requirement, so that you’re able to challenge and grow your teams. Strong aptitude for planning, management and operations are necessary too. You will have the opportunity to influence our culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work with your teams on strategy and execution. You’ll select, develop, retain and lead teams of excellent software developers to design and implement software that runs on various CPU architectures, such as ARM, RISC-V, and x86. You will meet with stakeholders, prioritize requests, plan your roadmap and ensure the team can deliver their goals.
Location: As an Engineering Director position, this requires a candidate who is confident to run a project which spans several teams and time zones, hiring and managing both engineering managers and staff engineers. The role is part of our global Canonical and Ubuntu engineering organisation. We prefer to appoint a candidate who will base themselves in our Taipei Minsheng office, alongside other enablement engineering leaders, and close to the stream of new hardware that goes into the certification lab.
We consider geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. We revisit compensation annually (and more often for graduates and associates) to ensure we recognise outstanding performance. In addition to base pay, we offer a performance-driven annual bonus or commission. We provide all team members with additional benefits, which reflect our values and ideals. We balance our programs to meet local needs and ensure fairness globally.

Location: This is an office based role. We expect the suitable candidate to be based in Toronto as you will be required to work on-site at our lab.
We are hiring a MAAS Systems Engineer to focus on building tooling to increase data center operational efficiency. As a MAAS Systems Engineer in Canonical, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of our lab in the Toronto area, which we use for Ubuntu server certification of US based silicon and server designs. This role is a combination of software engineering focusing on reliable automated hardware commissioning and deployment, as well as testing, troubleshooting and experimentation focusing on improving reliability and performance of our software. You don't need to be an expert in all of these areas, but you need to be a good software engineer who is curious about complex distributed systems to succeed in this role. If you love hacking in your home lab, have good Python skills, and are curious about data centre hardware, you will love this opportunity.
