Aerodynamics Engineer, Modeling & Optimization

What you’ll do:
- Perform low/mid/high fidelity aerodynamic simulations of Archer eVTOL aircraft
- Develop linear/non-linear aerodynamic models to predict aircraft behavior and performance throughout the flight envelope
- Analyze experimental data (either from flight test or wind tunnel) to identify sources of model errors, validate, and improve aerodynamic models of the vehicle
- Develop efficient methods to feed flight test data back into aerodynamic simulation models of various fidelity and complexity
- Contribute to the development of Archer aerodynamic software stack, improving methods and workflows
- Coordinate with other cross-functional teams and pilots for flight simulator aerodynamic modeling updates and issue resolution
What you need:
- BS / MS / PhD in Aerospace Engineering or a related field
- 2+ years of experience with BS, or 1+ years of experience with MS, or 1+ years of experience with PhD modeling rotorcraft, tiltrotor, eVTOL aerodynamics at full-vehicle level
- Strong understanding of fundamentals of fixed-wing and rotorcraft aerodynamics, performance, stability & control
- Experience in eVTOL and/or multicopter vehicle aerodynamics design and analysis, including 6 DoF vehicle trimming and trajectory optimization
- Experience with gradient-based and gradient-free optimization techniques
- Experience with surrogate modeling techniques (like Kriging methods) and statistical analysis
- Experience with experimental data processing and reduction techniques
- Proficiency in Python programming
- Experience with software development, object-oriented, version control best practices, as well as Git, CICD, Conda
- Excellent work planning and issue resolution skills
- Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in groups and individually
- Experience in a fast-paced design environment
Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience with developing, training, and optimizing neural networks or other machine learning models in the context of aerodynamic modeling
- Experience with wind tunnel and flight test campaigns planning, execution, and data processing, ideally matured on rotorcraft, tiltrotor, eVTOL program
- Work experience with rotorcraft comprehensive analysis tools, such as RCAS or CAMRAD2
- Work experience with NASA Overflow and Fun3D CFD software, including meshing
- Experience utilizing high-performance computing (HPC) to parallelize workflows
- Familiarity with conventional airplane Part 23/25 or rotorcraft Part 27/29 certification basis and test methods
- Familiarity with ASTM standards for fixed wing and rotorcraft
- Familiarity with Matlab/Simulink, and Fortran/C++ coding

Actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Staff Flight Sciences Software and HPC Engineer

What you’ll do:
- Design, implement, and maintain internal software libraries and applications as well as computing infrastructure to enable engineers to solve problems faster and more efficiently. Promote the use of shared computational infrastructure, tools, and practices across engineering teams within the Flight Sciences department.
- Develop processes and software tools to improve the reproducibility and traceability of computations. Drive the implementation of such tools.
- Promote a culture of software excellence across the engineering organization.
- Understand the needs of various engineering teams to efficiently utilize High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources, and make informed decisions on infrastructure solutions to ensure optimal resource utilization and cost savings.
- Maintain and administer on-premises HPC resources.
- Advocate for engineering and computing needs with the company-wide IT department.
What you need:
- Master's or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience as a user and developer of scientific/engineering software for flight sciences or similar disciplines (such as aerodynamics, acoustics, control, loads, thermal analysis, mass properties, vehicle simulation, etc.) in a fast-moving environment.
- Demonstrated experience in developing computing software and infrastructure, with proficiency in the scientific Python ecosystem (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow/PyTorch, VTK).
- Demonstrated experience in standard best practices in software development, including version control, CI/CD, software testing, environment management.
- Demonstrated experience with the design and administration of HPC systems, either on-premise or cloud (AWS preferred). Knowledge of Linux administration, high speed network interconnects, parallel file systems, and MPI required.
- Experience with HPC management software (Slurm/PBS/Torque, OpenHPC/Bright, Warewulf/XCat, Spack/EasyBuild, Lmod).
- Good understanding of enterprise IT and common network security practices.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience as an engineer in one or more of the following areas of aircraft design - aerodynamics, conceptual design, rotor/propeller design, vehicle simulation, loads and dynamics, structural design, stress analysis, GNC.
- Contributions to open source scientific software projects.
- Experience with MATLAB and Simulink.
- Proficiency in one or more compiled languages (e.g. C/C++, Fortran, Rust).
- Familiarity with databases (SQL, NoSQL, time-series) and database application design (ORM/ODM).
- Experience with software packaging (Pip, Conda, Spack) and containerization technologies (Docker/Singularity/Shifter) for scientific software.
- Familiarity with software configuration management tools (Chef/Puppet/Ansible).
- Familiarity with common CI/CD tools and practices (TeamCity/Jenkins, Artifactory, Docker, etc.).
- Experience with analysis tools and workflows for aircraft/rotorcraft design (aerodynamics, CFD, GNC, loads, structural analysis, CAD, mass properties, etc.).

Spacecraft Structures Analyst

About the role
Muon seeks an experienced and passionate spacecraft structural analyst to join our team. The ideal candidate has unwavering attention to detail and a total ownership mindset to help the team develop robust hardware which meets requirements on time. Being an early-stage startup with a small team, breadth is extremely important and we expect this person go far beyond running finite elements analyses. Ability to dive into structural test data, dynamics, inform risk vs. cost decisions, supplier interaction and everything else associated with the full lifecycle of a spacecraft and optical payload development is critical.
Leadership is also a key attribute we seek for this role. Muon’s team will be growing rapidly over time and there will be opportunities for both direct-management and indirect (tutoring, mentoring).
This role is located at our headquarters in San Jose, California.
Responsibilities
- Full lifecycle ownership of structures from quick-and-dirty early analysis for conceptual design to detailed finite element modeling to test support
- Find solutions in line with the risk posture of the company and programs, suggesting alternatives to traditional approaches and specifying the risks associated with those options
- Make economically sound choices for the company while understanding the path to constellations. Find solutions balancing the need to quickly demonstrate capability with the need to deploy systems at scale (make vs buy trades, etc)
- Create quick concepts and models that can be used to discuss and spur inspiration on the team in early phases of programs.
- Establish engineering standards and tools for others on the team to help instill a culture of rigor and analysis in all aspects of mechanical design
- Define and drive mechanical/structural validation and test approach (establish factors of safety, identify no-test margins, design dynamics and static load tests, pre-test response predictions, coordinate with test venues and direct tests on-site, etc)
Qualifications
- B.S. or higher degree in an engineering field, preferably Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
- Exceptional attention to detail and critical thinking
- Extensive experience running detailed finite element analyses for aerospace systems (FEMAP, ANSYS)
- Experience designing and executing structural tests for spacecraft
- Extensive experience as an individual contributor structural analyst
- Software skills in one or more of Python, Matlab, Julia, C, C++, Fortran or similar
- Excellent communication, presentation, coordination skills & curiosity
- Dedication to drawing conclusions on the most important factors and data
- Excited to work in a fast-paced environment with new opportunities each week
- A desire to change the way the world understands and reacts to climate and environmental data
- Travel occasionally required to execute tests on-site with environmental test vendors

Salary
The salary range for this role is $150,000 - $175,000 and will depend on a candidate's skills, geographic location, qualifications, and experience as defined during the interview process.
