Position Summary
We’re seeking a full-time Database Engineer (official title is Database Engineer III) with experience working in large-scale mission-critical environments with zero downtime for our San Diego-based corporate office.
The SHEIN DBRE team is a mix of DBA/SRE/DBRE oriented folks whose overarching goal is to provide highly available data services at scale. They strive to build an extremely reliable, performant, and secure database infrastructure through the skillful use of automation. This team is responsible for providing new architectures and scalability solutions to ever-growing business and data processing needs.
Our ideal candidate has a strong understanding of database fundamentals and how the properties of different database systems interact with applications and operating systems. You will be working onsite on a distributed team, with access to multiple customer environments.
Job Responsibilities
- Maintaining scalable, reliable, and robust production database environments.
- Monitoring for problems and diagnosing and addressing those problems as needed.
- Performance tuning, query optimization, and index tuning.
- Building database tools and scripts to simplify, automate, to reduce operation toil.
- Responsible for working with development teams and engineers to provide a database design guidance.
- Handle Database upgrades and migrations, while monitoring and improving database performance.
- Triage and solve database issues, drive incidents until resolution and employ measures to prevent recurrence.
- Do capacity planning benchmarking on various databases.
- Provide assessments of data integrity, high availability, data security, and privacy.
- Provide 24x7 escalated on-call support on a pager rotation.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or equivalent technical discipline.
- MySQL specific database experience.
- Experience using Azure or any other cloud provider.
- A solid understanding of distributed/replicated database topologies.
- Systematic problem-solving approach, combined with a sense of ownership and drive.
- Track record monitoring and analyzing system performance, isolating issues or bottlenecks that could impact reliability, performance and scalability.
- Good understanding of Linux system, ability to deploy open-source software independently.
- Proficient in more than one scripting language (golang/python/shell, etc.).
- A strong desire to be challenged by problems of scale and complexity to make our service better for our customers.
- The ability to remain calm in the face of extreme crises.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work effectively with geographically remote teams.
- AI Competency Requirements (Junior MySQL Operations Engineer) Familiar with mainstream AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, ChatGPT, Gemini) and able to leverage them for day-to-day operations tasks such as SQL optimization suggestions, troubleshooting, and documentation generation.
- Capable of writing effective prompts and iteratively refining them based on model outputs; aware of AI model limitations and maintains a habit of manually validating results.
- Has hands-on experience using AI tools to address real MySQL operations scenarios, such as slow query analysis, parameter tuning recommendations, and incident diagnosis assistance.
- Understands the fundamentals of RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) and is able to structure database operations knowledge into AI-consumable formats, such as knowledge bases, tuning case libraries, and FAQ documents.
- Has exposure to AI application frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex, or has basic experience with vector databases (e.g., Qdrant, pgvector).
- Understands the basics of MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration and is familiar with how AI Agents interact with external tools.
- Maintains a habit of organizing day-to-day operations experience into structured documents or prompt templates for team-wide sharing and reuse.

- Bilingual fluency in Mandarin and English.
- Experience managing MySQL / Percona Server 8 at scale.

What you'll be doing:
Client Partnership & Implementation
- Own and manage an enterprise client portfolio as primary technical advisor
- Deliver seamless implementations from kickoff through go-live, coordinating internal teams and ensuring timely deployment
- Develop deep knowledge of each client's goals and translate them into actionable plans with measurable results
- Engage clients regularly via Zoom, email, phone, and on-site visits to strengthen relationships and ensure alignment

Compensation Details
Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $121,000/yr- $149,000/yr in Scottsdale. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Symmetry has a physical office space in Scottsdale. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role).
When approved to work from a location other than the office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.

What The Role Is
We are seeking a talented Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain our data infrastructure supporting mission-critical energy operations. You'll work at the intersection of renewable energy and data, developing pipelines that process everything from real-time asset performance data to complex trading and risk analytics. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on clean energy operations while working with a cutting-edge data stack including Snowflake, Dagster, dbt, Modal, and GitLab.
What You'll Be Doing
Analytics Infrastructure & Data Warehouse Management
- Design, deploy, and maintain scalable data infrastructure to support enterprise analytics and reporting needs
- Manage Snowflake instances, including performance tuning, security configuration, and capacity planning for growing data volumes
- Optimize query performance and resource utilization to control costs and improve processing speed
Data Pipeline Development & Orchestration
- Build and orchestrate complex ETL/ELT workflows using Dagster to ensure reliable, automated data processing for asset management and energy trading
- Develop robust data pipelines that handle high-volume, time-sensitive energy market data and asset generation and performance metrics
- Implement workflow automation and dependency management for critical business operations
Data Transformation & Analytics Support
- Develop and maintain dbt models to transform raw data into business-ready analytical datasets and dimensional models
- Create efficient SQL-based transformations for complex energy market calculations and asset performance metrics
- Support advanced analytics initiatives through proper data preparation and feature engineering
Data Quality & Governance
- Implement comprehensive data validation, testing, and monitoring frameworks to ensure accuracy and consistency across all energy and financial data assets
- Establish data lineage tracking and privacy controls to meet regulatory compliance requirements in the energy sector
- Develop alerting and monitoring systems for data pipelines, including error handling, SLA monitoring, and incident response
CI/CD & DevOps
- Lead continuous integration and deployment initiatives for Dagster and dbt pipelines, and Streamlit/Gradio application deployments to Linux servers
- Implement automated testing and deployment automation for data pipelines and analytics applications
- Manage version control and infrastructure as code practices
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Partner with Analytics Engineers, Data Scientists, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions
- Work closely with asset management and trading groups to ensure real-time data availability for market operations and risk calculations
- Collaborate with credit risk teams to develop data models supporting financial analysis and regulatory reporting
- Translate business requirements into technical solutions and communicate data insights to stakeholders
Documentation & Security
- Create and maintain technical documentation, data dictionaries, and onboarding materials for data assets
- Implement role-based access controls, data encryption, and security best practices across the data stack
- Monitor and optimize cloud infrastructure costs, implement resource allocation strategies, and provide cost forecasting
What You'll Bring
- Experience: 4+ years of hands-on data engineering experience in production environments
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Data Orchestration: Proficiency in Dagster for pipeline scheduling, dependency management, and workflow automation; Airflow experience a plus
- Cloud Data Warehousing: Advanced-level Snowflake administration, including virtual warehouses, clustering, security, and cost optimization
- Data Transformation: Proficiency in dbt for data modeling, testing, documentation, and version control of analytical transformations
- Programming: Strong Python and SQL skills for data processing and automation
- CI/CD: 3+ years of experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment practices and tools; proficiency in GitLab CI/CD required (GitHub Actions experience a plus)
- Database Technologies: Advanced SQL skills, database design principles, and experience with multiple database platforms
- Cloud Platforms: Proficiency in AWS/Azure/GCP data services, storage solutions (S3, Azure Blob, GCS), and infrastructure as code
- Data Integration: Experience with APIs, various data connectors, and formats
- Data Security: Understanding of data security best practices, access controls, encryption, and role-based access management
- AI & LLM Proficiency: Practical experience integrating and leveraging large language models (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, or open-source models) within data workflows; ability to apply LLMs efficiently and securely, with awareness of data privacy boundaries, prompt injection risks, and responsible AI usage in production environments
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with attention to detail
- Communication: Ability to work effectively with both technical and business stakeholders
- Work Style: Comfortable with a hybrid work environment (2-3 days in office); highly autonomous and self-directed with a strong work ethic and growth mindset; exceptional attention to detail; able to take ownership of projects end-to-end with minimal oversight

We are seeking a Staff Database Engineer (Official Title: Staff Database Engineer I) with experience managing large-scale, mission-critical environments that require zero downtime. As part of the SHEIN DBRE team, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of our database infrastructure through automation and scalable solutions. Our team integrates DBA, SRE, and DBRE expertise to deliver highly available data services. We design resilient architectures to meet evolving business and data processing demands, prioritizing efficiency and system reliability. While each team member may have their preferred technologies, a deep understanding of database fundamentals—and how different database systems interact with applications and operating systems—is essential for success. This role requires collaboration across multiple customer environments and global teams.
This role requires independent execution and the ability to manage critical production systems without direct supervision. Commitment to incident response and adherence to on-call responsibilities is essential.
Job Responsibilities
- Maintain scalable, reliable, and robust production database environments across various database systems, including MySQL, ClickHouse, and MongoDB.
- Continuously monitor database health, proactively diagnose issues, and implement resolutions as needed.
- Optimize database performance through query tuning, index optimization, and performance diagnostics.
- Develop and maintain database tools and automation scripts to streamline operations and reduce manual toil.
- Collaborate with development teams and engineers to provide guidance on database design, best practices, and architectural decisions.
- Manage database upgrades, migrations, and schema changes while ensuring minimal disruption and improved performance.
- Triage and resolve database issues, driving incidents to resolution and implementing preventative measures.
- Conduct capacity planning and benchmarking across multiple database technologies.
- Ensure data integrity, high availability, security, and privacy compliance across all database environments.
- Provide 24/7 escalated on-call support as part of a pager rotation.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
- 4+ years of hands-on MySQL database management experience.
- 4+ years of experience with Azure, AWS, or any other major cloud provider.
- Strong understanding of distributed and replicated database architectures.
- Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
- Experience in monitoring and analyzing system performance, identifying bottlenecks, and improving database reliability and scalability.
- Proficiency in at least one scripting language (e.g., Golang, Shell); familiarity with Golang development is a plus.
- Passion for solving scalability and performance challenges in large-scale environments.
- Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, especially during critical incidents.
- Strong expertise in Linux operating systems, storage, networking, and related system principles.
Nice to Have
- Bilingual fluency in Mandarin and English is highly preferred.
- 5+ years of experience managing MySQL at scale in high-performance environments.
- Experience with ClickHouse, MongoDB, or other distributed database systems.
- Deep knowledge of database internals, including the ability to independently deploy and optimize open-source tools like Percona or MySQL source code.
- Hands-on experience with Golang development or proficiency in other programming languages for automation.
- Hands-on experience using multiple AI models (Claude Code, ChatGPT, Gemini) to solve real-world problems, including troubleshooting model limitations, comparing outputs, and applying prompt tuning strategies to improve result quality
- Experience building AI-driven operations tools or platforms from scratch, covering requirements, architecture design, and production deployment.
- Participated in team-wide AI tooling transformation initiatives; contributed to or established shared asset libraries covering Prompts, MCP integrations, and Skills.
- Familiar with AI application frameworks such as LangChain and LlamaIndex, with practical experience integrating them with relational or vector databases.
- Able to systematically structure and document database tuning knowledge into AI-consumable formats (knowledge bases, RAG corpora, Skill libraries), driving continuous improvement of team-wide tuning capabilities.
