Who We Are

The Search Systems team at MongoDB builds the core infrastructure behind MongoDB Search and Vector Search. Our mission is to make advanced search capabilities feel native to the database, so developers can build powerful, scalable applications without standing up separate systems or compromising transactional performance.

We are the team behind mongot, the indexing and query execution engine that powers Search and Vector Search across MongoDB Atlas and self-managed deployments. Our work sits at the intersection of distributed systems, databases, and search infrastructure. We integrate Apache Lucene with MongoDB using native query operators like $search and $vectorSearch, build asynchronous change-stream-driven indexing pipelines that scale independently from transactional workloads, and support deployments across cloud, on-prem, and hybrid environments. Engineers on this team own meaningful subsystems, influence architectural decisions, and work on core database technology used by developers globally.

This role can be based out of our Toronto office or remotely in Canada.

What You'll Do

This is a rare opportunity to set the technical direction for one of MongoDB's most strategic investments. You will define the architecture of a self-contained search system that spans Community, Enterprise, and Atlas, while guiding how we integrate AI-native capabilities from Voyage AI. This is not a chance to influence a feature. It is a chance to shape the foundation of how developers everywhere build applications with MongoDB.

In this role, you will:

• Own the cross-system data infrastructure layer for MongoDB's next-generation Search and Vector Search capabilities, carrying outcomes that span 6-18 months
• Define the technical roadmap for Atlas Search, identifying gaps, proposing solutions, and driving alignment across engineering teams globally
• Lead the architecture and evolution of the core mongot and Mongo Management Service infrastructure, making durability, consistency, and scale decisions with conviction
• Drive complex, multi-team initiatives by building technical consensus, navigating ambiguity, and setting direction when there is no clean playbook
• Serve as a trusted technical partner to leadership on roadmap, architecture, and engineering process, advising rather than just informing
• Raise the technical ceiling of the team through mentoring, rigorous code review, and knowledge-sharing that creates leverage beyond your own output
• Standardize how engineering teams across the globe contract with one another, reducing coordination costs and increasing execution velocity at scale

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 10+ years of experience in data management systems or related distributed infrastructure
• Deep proficiency in modern programming languages and techniques, with Java fluency preferred
• Demonstrable experience designing and operating distributed systems, cloud services, or SaaS products at scale
• The ability to reason about systems at the physical layer: data consistency, durability guarantees, concurrency, and failure modes in distributed environments
• A track record of operating at Staff or Principal scope: defining technical direction, resolving cross-team ambiguity, and personally championing initiatives from conception to delivery

Preferred (not required):

• Experience designing or maintaining search platforms or distributed databases
• Experience debugging and profiling multithreaded JVM applications and distributed systems

The profile we hire at this level:

Operational Architects. You understand the physical limits of the stack. You can articulate why a system breaks at 100x load, reason about the risks of a dual-write migration strategy, and make data consistency and durability decisions with conviction.

Scale-First Thinkers. You identify risks before they surface. You think in migration paths, failure modes, and second-order architectural consequences, not just implementation details.

Technical Force Multipliers. You create leverage across teams. You challenge requirements rather than execute them, set technical direction independently, and hold a high bar for architectural clarity whether you are mentoring a struggling engineer or reviewing a design with a principal.

Systems Intuitionists. You connect operational constraints to design decisions in concrete terms. You know why fsync matters. You know how atomic operations behave under contention. You have built systems where these things were not hypothetical.

What Success Looks Like

In 3 months: You have developed deep familiarity with the core mongot and Mongo Management Service repos and shipped your first meaningful contribution.

In 6 months: You are driving features that build out new infrastructure for Atlas Search and have identified at least one systemic risk or architectural gap the team had not fully articulated.

In 12 months: You are building POCs, setting technical direction on complex cross-team projects, and actively shaping what the next generation of MongoDB Search looks like.

DESCRIPTION DU POSTE :

Nous cherchons à agrandir notre équipe de développement dédiée à l'amélioration de nos outils et de notre flux de travail pour les effets de créatures, les foules, les environnements et les effets spéciaux. Nous recherchons un(e) ingénieur(e) technique hautement compétent qui se concentrera sur le développement et la mise en œuvre d'ensembles d'outils procéduraux robustes, performants et spécifiques à un domaine à l'aide de SideFX Houdini.

Ce poste exige un leadership technique solide et la capacité de travailler efficacement avec un minimum de supervision aux côtés d'un(e) ingénieur(e) logiciel principal(e) ou d'un(e) architecte. Le/La candidat(e) idéal(e) s'épanouit dans un environnement de production en constante évolution où les priorités peuvent changer rapidement.

Vos missions :

• Concevoir, développer et mettre en œuvre des systèmes procéduraux et des workflows évolutifs dans Houdini pour divers départements (effets spéciaux, créatures, foules, environnements). 
• Créer, maintenir et optimiser des ressources numériques Houdini (OTL) robustes, en garantissant leur stabilité, leur facilité d'utilisation et leur conformité aux normes de production.
• Étendre le pipeline principal en développant, intégrant et prenant en charge des outils qui gèrent le flux de données, la publication des ressources et le contrôle des versions.
• Collaborer étroitement avec les artistes (créatures, effets spéciaux, éclairage) afin de recueillir les exigences et de résoudre les problèmes techniques, en fournissant une assistance pour les outils internes et commerciaux.
• Collaborer avec les ingénieurs d'autres équipes (ombrage, éclairage, rendu) afin d'assurer une intégration transparente des ressources procédurales dans le pipeline global de rendu et de composition.
• Documenter de manière exhaustive les outils et les flux de travail à l'intention des équipes artistiques et techniques au sens large.

Expérience et compétences techniques requises :

• 3 à 5 ans d'expérience professionnelle dans le développement de workflows et d'outils procéduraux dans un environnement de production d'effets visuels, d'animation ou de jeux vidéo.
• Connaissance avérée de l'environnement Houdini, y compris la création d'outils, l'optimisation et les techniques de workflow.
• Maîtrise approfondie de Python et VEX pour l'écriture de nœuds personnalisés et efficaces, et de boîte à outils. 
• Expérience avérée dans le développement et le support d'outils de pipeline de production et de livraison d'actifs.
• Expérience dans l'utilisation de l'API Houdini et d'autres DCC tels que Katana.
• Bonne maîtrise des mathématiques 3D, de l'algèbre linéaire et des structures de données appliquées au traitement et à la simulation géométriques.
• Solides compétences en communication orale et écrite, avec une approche collaborative de la résolution de problèmes.
• Capacité à mener à bien plusieurs tâches prioritaires concurrentes avec peu de supervision.

Compétences souhaitées :

• Fait preuve de curiosité et de jugement pour identifier les problèmes plus larges ou systémiques et recommande des approches créatives pour résoudre les problèmes plus généraux.
• Expérience documentée dans le développement d'applications de bureau à l'aide de PyQt/PySide pour créer des interfaces utilisateur personnalisées.
• Expérience avec C++ pour le développement de plugins haute performance.
• Expérience en science des données, apprentissage automatique ou techniques de simulation complexes (par exemple, dynamique des fluides, tissus) dans un contexte de production.
• Licence ou master en informatique, médias numériques ou dans un domaine technique connexe.

Role overview:

We are looking to expand our development team dedicated to enhancing our Creature Effect, Crowds, Environment, and FX tools and workflow. We are looking for a highly proficient Technical Engineer to focus on the development and implementation of robust, high-performance, and domain-specific procedural toolsets using SideFX Houdini.

This role requires strong technical leadership and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision alongside a Lead Software Engineer or Architect. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced production environment where priorities can shift quickly.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Design, develop, and implement scalable procedural systems and workflows within Houdini for various departments (FX, Creature, Crowds, Environments). 
• Create, maintain, and optimize robust Houdini Digital Assets (OTLs), ensuring stability, ease of use, and adherence to production standards.
• Extend the core pipeline by developing, integrating, and supporting tools that manage data flow, asset publishing, and version control.
• Collaborate closely with artists (Creature, FX, Lighting) to gather requirements and troubleshoot technical issues, providing support for both in-house and commercial tools.
• Partner with engineers across other teams (Shading, Lighting, Rendering) to ensure seamless integration of procedural assets into the overall rendering and compositing pipeline.
• Document tools and workflows thoroughly for use by the wider artistic and engineering teams.

Required Technical Experience & Skills:

• 3-5+ Years of professional experience in developing procedural workflows and tools in a VFX, Animation, or Game production environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Houdini environment, including tool creation, optimization, and workflow techniques.
• Strong proficiency in Python and VEX for writing efficient, custom nodes, and tool wrappers.
• Proven experience developing and supporting production pipeline tools and asset delivery.
• Experience leveraging the Houdini API and other DCCs like Katana.
• Strong grasp of 3D math, linear algebra, and data structures as applied to geometry processing and simulation.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
• Capable of delivering on multiple competing priorities with little supervision.

Preferred skills:

• Applies curiosity and judgment to identify broader or systemic issues and recommends creative approaches that address wider issues.
• Documented experience with desktop application development using PyQt/PySide to create custom user interfaces.
