Lead Data Engineer

Lead data engineers at Thoughtworks develop modern data architecture approaches to meet key business objectives and provide end-to-end data solutions. They might spend a few weeks with a new client on a deep technical review or a complete organizational review, helping them to understand the potential that data brings to solve their most pressing problems. On projects, they will be leading the design of technical solutions, or perhaps overseeing a program inception to build a new product. Alongside hands-on coding, they are leading the team to implement the solution.
Job responsibilities
- You will lead and manage data engineering projects from inception to completion, including goal-setting, scope definition and ensuring on-time delivery with cross team collaboration.
- You will collaborate with stakeholders to understand their strategic objectives and identify opportunities to leverage data and data quality.
- You will design, develop and operate modern data architecture approaches to meet key business objectives and provide end-to-end data solutions.
- You will be responsible to create, design and develop intricate data processing pipelines, addressing clients' most challenging problems.
- You will collaborate with data scientists to design scalable implementations of their models.
- You write clean and iterative code based on TDD and leverage various continuous delivery practices to deploy, support and operate data pipelines.
- You will lead and advise clients on how to use different distributed storage and computing technologies from the plethora of options available.
- You will develop data models by selecting from a variety of modeling techniques and implementing the chosen data model using the appropriate technology stack.
- You will be responsible for data governance, data security and data privacy to support business and compliance requirements.
- You will define the strategy for and incorporate data quality into your day-to-day work.
Job qualifications
Technical Skills
- You have experience with databricks
- Working with data excites you; You have created Big Data architecture, can build and operate data pipelines, and maintain data storage, all within distributed systems.
- You have a deep understanding of Gen/AI and LLMs
- You have experience in writing clean, high-quality code using the preferred programming language.
- You have built and deployed large-scale data pipelines and data-centric applications using any of the distributed storage platforms and distributed processing platforms in a production setting.
- You have experience with data visualization techniques and can communicate the insights as per the audience.
- You have experience with data-driven approaches and can apply data security and privacy strategy to solve business problems.
- You have experience with different types of databases (i.e.: SQL, NoSQL, data lake, data schemas, etc.).
- Advanced English is required

The Platform Engineering team powers fast, secure, and reliable software delivery across the business. We partner with Engineering, Data, Security, and QA teams to build platforms that reduce toil and make engineers' lives easier. From managing our Azure infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines to shaping core developer tooling, we focus on scalability, resiliency, and security at every step. We're always exploring new tools, testing ideas, and applying industry best practices to keep our platform cutting-edge and our teams empowered.
What You'll Be Doing 🗃️
- Develop a deep understanding of how infrastructure changes differ from application changes, and become a subject matter expert in the unique challenges of testing them safely and effectively.
- Define and own the frameworks, processes, and guardrails that ensure infrastructure changes are validated consistently across all environments from development through to production.
- Build and maintain automated validation pipelines that verify infrastructure changes at each stage of promotion, catching drift, regressions, and misconfigurations before they reach production.
- Establish clear standards for what "good" infrastructure testing looks like at Capital on Tap covering areas such as plan validation, policy compliance, integration testing, and rollback verification.
- Design, provision, and maintain dedicated test environments on Azure, ensuring they are stable, reproducible, and closely mirror production.
- Own the Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) for all test environment provisioning, teardown, and configuration management.
- Collaborate with QA and Product Engineering teams to understand environment requirements and translate them into reliable, scalable infrastructure.
- Develop and enforce standards around test data management — including data seeding, masking, and refresh strategies to support consistent and repeatable testing.
- Monitor the health and availability of test environments using existing observability tooling, proactively identifying and resolving issues before they block teams.
- Contribute to incident management processes, ensuring infrastructure-related failures are diagnosed quickly and learnings feed back into improved guardrails and processes.

We’re Looking For 🔎
- 2-4 years of experience in a platform, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering role, ideally with some exposure to QA, testing practices, or quality engineering.
- A genuine curiosity for understanding how infrastructure changes behave differently to application code changes, and an interest in building the processes to test them rigorously.
- Hands-on experience with a major cloud provider (Azure, AWS, or GCP), with the ability to design and manage non-production environments.
- Proven experience writing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), including an understanding of plan/apply workflows and how changes can be safely validated.
- Familiarity with policy-as-code, compliance validation, or infrastructure testing approaches (e.g. validating configurations, detecting drift, or verifying rollback behaviour).
- Solid understanding of containerisation and Kubernetes, particularly in the context of running isolated, ephemeral test workloads.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and how infrastructure change validation fits into automated delivery workflows.
- Comfortable working with observability and alerting tooling to monitor environment health and surface issues early.
- Proficiency in at least one scripting language (Python, PowerShell, or Go) for automation and tooling tasks.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach, you'll be working closely with platform engineers, QA engineers, and security teams to establish shared standards.

- Experience with contact centers, VoIP, or telecommunications.
- Familiarity with building and managing multi-tenant systems.
- Experience with Kubernetes and modern CI/CD pipelines.
Key Relationships
This role reports within the engineering management structure and has no direct reports.
Key stakeholders include:
- AI and Product leadership.
- Engineering and architecture teams.
- Technical leadership and senior management.
- Compliance and Information Security teams.
