We are looking for a Senior Staff Product Designer to join as the design lead for our Customer Experience team, reporting directly to the Head of Design. This is a player/coach role. You will carry significant IC responsibility while directly managing one Product Designer who is focused on load planning and exception management.

Your mandate is the end-to-end customer journey that makes autonomous freight a reality. You will design the suite of tools used by trucking and logistics companies to activate and manage daily operations for a fleet of self-driving trucks. While autonomous technology is genuinely new territory for our customers, your job is to design experiences that feel familiar, intuitive, and integrated into their existing ecosystems. This isn’t a SaaS dashboard exercise. These are high-stakes operational tools that a vehicle operator or load planner needs to adopt to safely run an autonomous truck.

In this role, you will

• Own the customer experience blueprint. Define how interactions with the Aurora Driver are consistent, simple, and unified with the broader operational ecosystem
• Design customer-facing digital tools across web, mobile, and partner integrations
• Do just enough research to generate actionable insight, then use it to drive product decisions, not decorate them
• Tie your work directly to outcomes. For example, ensure support feels like a natural part of the product by designing self-serve recovery paths that allow users to resolve issues in under 5 minutes
• Manage and develop one Product Designer, and contribute to raising the bar for the broader design practice

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in product design, with a track record of leading complex, multi-workstream projects
• Experience formally managing other designers
• A portfolio showing end-to-end work across research and design for complex enterprise, operational, or mission-critical systems, with clear evidence of business impact
• Expertise in interaction design, information architecture, and UX research with a high bar for visual design quality
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate research insights and design rationale into clear, compelling narratives for executive, cross-functional, and technical audiences

Desirable Qualifications 

• Experience with autonomous technology, hardware-software integrated products, or physical supply chain logistics
• Demonstrated ability to use AI across the design lifecycle without losing judgment

The base salary range for this position is $171K-$247K per year.  Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The journey to developing our cutting-edge self-driving truck Driver software requires a massive and continuous computational effort. Every day, Aurora's engineers initiate and manage millions of compute tasks, systematically processing and analyzing petabytes of critical data. This colossal computational workload spans various essential domains, including raw and derived data processing pipelines, large-scale simulations to test and validate the software in countless scenarios, and the intensive machine learning training jobs that are the core of our autonomous system's intelligence.

At the heart of orchestrating this monumental compute infrastructure is the Compute team. This team is dedicated to building and maintaining the foundational technology that solves the fundamental challenges of resource scheduling, task isolation, and distributed state consistency across our massive batch compute fleet. At our scale, traditional off-the-shelf orchestrators break. The Compute team builds the custom engine - BatchAPI - that manages the lifecycle of millions of tasks - built on top of K8s primitives but implements our own custom scheduler.

We deal with the 'unsolved' problems of distributed computing: maximizing hardware utilization while ensuring that a failure in one node doesn't cascade across the entire cluster. This engine is engineered to handle massive scale, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and rapid turnaround for our engineers.

Furthermore, the Compute team empowers engineers across the company to effectively harness this compute power. They develop and maintain the Batch Workflows Python SDK. This framework provides an intuitive, high-level interface that allows engineers to programmatically define, construct, deploy, monitor, and manage their complex computational workloads. The SDK abstracts away the complexities of the underlying infrastructure, enabling engineers to focus purely on the logic and goals of their data processing, simulation, or training tasks, thus accelerating the entire development cycle for the Aurora Driver.

In this role you will

• Design, implement, and maintain core components of the high-performance, large-scale distributed batch compute engine (BatchAPI). Architect and optimize the scheduler, resource allocator, and execution engine of BatchAPI to handle bursty, heterogeneous workloads with minimal overhead.
• Design low-latency APIs and resilient communication protocols that bridge our Python SDK with the Golang-based core engine.
• Develop high-level workflow abstractions, enabling engineers across the company to programmatically define, deploy, and manage complex data processing, simulation, and ML training pipelines. 
• Solve complex problems in distributed locking, throttling, and fair-share scheduling to ensure multi-tenant stability.
• Drive continuous improvements in the performance, scalability, and resilience of the entire compute infrastructure, implementing robust monitoring and alerting systems to maintain operational excellence for critical workflows.
• Collaborate closely with infrastructure and product engineering teams (e.g., Autonomy, Data, Simulation, Machine Learning) to gather requirements, provide expert consultation, and integrate compute workflows with key company systems.

Required qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Deep expertise in Golang (for core systems) and Python (for SDK/API layering).
• Strong understanding of distributed systems fundamentals (e.g., CAP theorem, consensus algorithms, or gossip protocols).
• Experience with performance profiling and tuning (e.g., memory management, I/O bottlenecks, or network latency optimization).
• Specialized knowledge of container orchestration systems like Kubernetes.
• Proven track record of driving continuous performance, scalability, and resilience improvements in production environments managing critical data.
• Familiarity with cloud provider compute and data services (e.g., AWS EKS, S3, RDS).

Desirable qualifications

• Experience working with computational workloads specific to the autonomous vehicle, robotics, or large-scale machine learning domains (e.g., data processing for perception, simulation, or model training).
• Demonstrated ability in creating and refining user-facing tools, including adeptness at incorporating user feedback, managing expectations, and effectively prioritizing development based on user needs.

This role reports directly to the Design Lead for Aurora Operations Experience. We are hiring for this position to own the design of the Command Center overseer experience, focusing specifically on the high-stakes tools and workflows required to monitor and manage autonomous truck activity on the road.

As we scale our fleet of self-driving trucks and expand our network, this role offers a rare opportunity to establish the interaction patterns that will set industry standards for how autonomous systems surface information to oversight teams in complex, real-world environments.

In this role you will

• Own the end-to-end design for the Command Center overseer experience, ensuring supervisors have the clarity and tools needed to monitor real-time truck activity safely and efficiently
• Identify and solve the highest priority pain points for operations leads in their monitoring and intervention workflows
• Create high-fidelity prototypes in Figma to model and evaluate how the Aurora Driver communicates its status and intentions to the Command Center across digital touchpoints
• Work closely with cross-functional partners in engineering and product to define, explore, and ship solutions that support the efficient operation of our fleet

As a Heavy Truck Diesel Mechanic, you will:

• Make sure equipment is well-maintained and safe for our customers.
• Use Mid-Atlantic Truck & Equipment diagnostic equipment to research and complete repairs.
• Complete preventative maintenance repairs-like replacing or rotating tires and completing vehicle component lubrication and replacement, some electrical system repairs, and cooling system maintenance on gas and diesel engine vehicles.
• Maintain paperwork/electronic documentation of work performed (work orders) in a thorough and timely manner.
• Partner with the service manager to learn new skills using Mid-Atlantic Truck & Equipment technician training and hands-on coaching.
• Other duties assigned as needed.

What are the qualifications that we're looking for?

• 4+ years' experience with hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, and hoses
• 4+ years’ of MIG and stick welding experience
• 4+ years’ of automotive electrical experience
• 4+ years’ of diesel engine repair is preferred
• Must have own tools
• Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Class A or B CDL is a plus!
• Possess working mechanical knowledge, including the use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to frequently kneel, bend, squat, push, pull, and reach.
• Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
• Must be able to get into and out of various vehicles without assistance.
• Must pass a DOT physical including drug screening.
