The day-to-day

• Develop and own the overarching system architecture for complex, multi-domain platforms (e.g., drones, sensor pods, ground support systems), partitioning them into manageable hardware and software subsystems.
  
  
• Act as the primary owner of the system model, utilising Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools (e.g., Cameo, Enterprise Architect) and SysML to document system behaviours, state machines, and interfaces.
  
  
• Actively participate in the physical integration of mechatronic systems in the lab and field, working directly with hardware and software to test, troubleshoot, and validate performance.
  
  
• Lead multidisciplinary trade-off analyses (e.g., SWaP-C: Size, Weight, Power, and Cost) to determine the most effective, scalable architectural solutions.
  
  
• Translate high-level architectures into detailed subsystem and component specifications, establishing clear requirements and interface control documents (ICDs).
  
  
• Conduct system-level testing, analyse test data, and support complex root-cause analysis on failures to drive rapid design iterations.
  
  
• Collaborate daily with software architects, hardware developers, and AI engineers to ensure system-level alignment and technical consistency across all disciplines.
  
  
• Identify emerging trends and propose new structural solutions to enhance our physical defence systems and their integration with AI capabilities.

You should apply if you

• Have 4+ years of hands-on experience in systems engineering and/or system architecture for complex mechatronic, defence, aerospace, or autonomous systems.

The role

We are looking for a Systems Engineer specializing in Low Observability (LO) Materials and Shaping. You will join a diverse team of specialists working on complex challenges in the defence space. You will apply your expertise to ensure our air vehicles achieve critical survivability requirements through advanced material integration and structural shaping.

The day-to-day

• Develop radar cross-section (RCS) and infrared (IR) material concepts for air vehicles and integrate them into the overall structural concept.

• Create and execute a technology maturation roadmap for low observability materials and supplier components.

• Develop RCS and IR concepts for supplier parts (including antennas, air data systems, and EO/IR windows) in collaboration with suppliers, and initiate relevant development activities.

• Direct and oversee supplier and testing activities for RCS and IR performance.

• Execute iterative air vehicle shape optimization in coordination with partners (including Grob) and suppliers to refine RCS and IR calculations.

You should apply if you

• Hold a relevant degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.

• Have 8+ years of professional experience in systems engineering, with a focus on low observability, RCS/IR materials, and structural integration.

• Understand electromagnetic theory, radar cross-section reduction techniques, and infrared signature management deeply.

• Have a proven track record of leading supplier development and testing programmes.

The day-to-day

• Own day-to-day system engineering and integration of airborne radar (AESA/MFR as applicable) from requirements through flight test and operational release.

• Translate mission needs into radar performance requirements: detection range, RCS assumptions, coverage/scan, update rate, track quality, latency, and environmental constraints.

• Develop and maintain radar concept of operations (CONOPS) and mode set (search, track, GMTI/MTI, SAR/ISAR as applicable), including mode scheduling and mission-phase behavior.

• Drive antenna/aperture integration: placement, FOV/boresight alignment, radome impacts, thermal/structural constraints, and maintainability considerations.

• Own RF performance.

• Build and maintain end-to-end performance models.

• Ensure radar supports low observability constraints: radome/RCS trade studies, edge treatments, leakage/spur control, and LPI considerations where applicable.

• Plan and execute verification & test with a special focus on installed senor performance.

• Coordinate with software/avionics teams on data interfaces.

• Manage supplier technical control: review specs, acceptance tests, algorithm releases, and change requests; track issues to closure with objective evidence.

• Define and maintain interfaces/ICDs to avionics and mission systems.

• Produce program artifacts: requirements, verification matrices, test plans, performance reports, and flight readiness inputs.

You should apply if you

• Hold a relevant degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.

• Have experience in delivering airborne radar (AESA and/or MFR) capabilities through integration, test, and operational release.

• Can translate operational scenarios into radar KPIs (range vs RCS, coverage/scan, revisit/update, track quality, latency) and flow them into verifiable requirements.

• Have practical experience with radar modes and scheduling (search/track, MTI/GMTI, SAR/ISAR as applicable) and the trade space between detection, tracking, and resources.

• Understand RF and antenna/aperture integration: placement, boresight alignment, radome effects, thermal/power constraints, and maintainability.

• Have an LO/signature-aware mindset: radome/RCS trade-offs, leakage/spur control, and LPI concepts where applicable.

• Have led verification & test (bench/HIL, chamber/anechoic, range/flight test support) and can debug from RF to software parameters.

• Can own ICDs and supplier technical control: review evidence, manage changes, and drive issues to objective closure.

The impact you will make

Your responsibilities

• Design and development of mechanical systems for ion, electron, neutron, and X/gamma-ray diagnostics used in ultrafast laser experiments together with scientists.
• Design in-vacuum electronics cooling systems
• Experience with vacuum-compatible assemblies using Autodesk Inventor with emphasis on modularity, alignment, and maintenance
• Integrate diagnostic systems in harsh environments with strong EMP and electromagnetic interference; develop mechanical shielding, cooling and isolation strategies.
• Select UHV-compatible materials, components, and sealing methods for use in experimental vacuum chambers.
• Support assembly, alignment, and field deployment of diagnostic devices at remote experimental facilities.
• Collaborate closely with physicists, electrical engineers, and systems integrators to ensure diagnostic compatibility with laser systems and target chambers.
• Conduct structural, thermal, and mechanical simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics
• Create ISO/DIN/CE-compliant documentation, including technical drawings, BOMs, risk assessments, and safety documentation.

What you bring

• B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, or a closely related discipline with 5+ years of industry experience
• Demonstrated experience designing and building precision mechanical systems for high-energy laser experiments or similar research environments
• Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor for mechanical design
• Hands-on experience with vacuum-compatible systems and UHV materials
• Strong understanding of Cooling systems for in-vacuum electronics
• Familiarity with ISO, DIN, and CE standards relevant to mechanical safety, manufacturing, and system integration
• Ability to work independently in both lab and remote deployment settings with minimal supervision
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative, problem-solving mindset

What sets you apart

• Experience deploying diagnostics in high-intensity laser facilities or similar environments
• Familiarity with spectrometer types such as Thomson parabola, time-of-flight systems, or scintillator-based detectors
• Proficiency in COMSOL Multiphysics and experience with Geant4, OpenFoam, or other physics codes for shielding and system interaction modeling

The Quantum Systems Land Domain is developing leading-edge autonomous UGV technology for defense — a domain where no blueprint exists. The product strategy starts with a UGV that is useful on today’s battlefields and can be built with current technology, then progressively increases the authority of the autonomy system while reducing the need for human supervision — across ever more complex operating environments, up to fully autonomous operation in proximity to civilians.

As a senior design assurance expert, you will own and shape this discipline from the ground up: establish the safety architecture, build the assurance processes, and drive design integrity across hardware, software, and ML. You will bridge the gap between safety analysis and engineering implementation — working with system safety, product security, engineering teams, and V&V to ensure safety functions are correctly implemented through the technical architecture. As the product matures, you will grow your domain into a team.

What you will work on / How you will leave your footprint

• Establish and maintain the design assurance process, ensuring safety functions are correctly implemented through the technical architecture.
• Conduct hardware safety analysis — FMEA/FMECA, failure rate analysis, diagnostic coverage, component derating, and environmental qualification.
• Conduct software safety analysis — architecture assessment, identification of safety-relevant software components, and definition of software safety requirements.
• Conduct ML element assurance — data governance, model validation, robustness testing, performance monitoring, and uncertainty quantification for safety-relevant ML components.
• Contribute to component selection for safety-critical functions — evaluate against reliability data, failure mode profiles, and supply chain maturity.
• Define safety mechanisms — redundancy, monitoring, plausibility checks, safe-state transitions, and watchdogs.

• Own and maintain the system requirements baseline — translate safety measures, security controls, and design needs into verifiable requirements with full traceability.
• Manage compliance matrices for design-level regulations (Low Voltage Directive, EMC Directive, Battery Regulation, REACH, RoHS, POPs).
• Maintain environmental compliance documents (LCEP, EDC, ETS), substance register, and project handbook.
• Coordinate with System Safety to receive safety function allocations and integrity targets; provide feasibility and cost-benefit feedback; escalate when targets are infeasible.
• Coordinate with Product Security on shared technical architecture — fail-safe vs. fail-secure behavior, component selection criteria, and unified software development guidelines.
• Translate system requirements into hardware design rules, software coding guidelines, and integration test requirements for engineering teams; participate in design reviews and FMEA workshops.
• Define verification criteria and fault injection test cases on system requirements for V&V; specify coverage targets; review and accept V&V evidence for design-level safety claims.
• Develop and maintain AI-assisted workflows for requirements management, compliance auditing, and traceability verification.
  
  

What you bring to the team

• Hands-on expertise in hardware safety, software safety, and fault-tolerant system design — FMEA/FMECA, diagnostic coverage analysis, safe-state design, and safety mechanism specification — with an engineering mindset and hands-on attitude.
• Experience translating high-level safety functions into verifiable, allocatable system requirements and managing full traceability across the engineering lifecycle.
• Ability to evaluate cost-benefit tradeoffs between alternative safety architectures and present quantitative safety arguments (PFH, PFHd, MTTFd, DCavg, SFF, PL metrics).

• Working knowledge of IEC 61508, ISO 13849, ISO 12100, or ISO 26262 and their application to mixed-criticality architectures.

• Understanding of environmental qualification and its impact on component selection and reliability claims (AECTP, substance regulations).
