• Define the imaging architecture: You will select the optimal combination of lenses and sensors aligning requirements with our AI team to optimize algorithm performance, balancing technical trade-offs.

• You will guide & perform the implementation of low-level logic like FPGA programming, handling high-speed sensor interfaces and implementing hardware-based synchronization.

• Drive the Manufacturing Lifecycle: You will collaborate closely with external partners to transition your designs from prototype to production, defining validation tests and resolving challenges for complex opto-electronic assemblies.

• Hardware Bring-up & Debug: You will spend hands-on time in the lab bringing up prototypes, testing their performance under varying conditions and support their integration into our software stack.

• Image Quality Tuning: You will analyze application specific camera performance and tune your designs & low-level algorithms to maximize the value the sensor provides to our AI applications.

You should apply if you

• Have a Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Optical Engineering, related field or equivalent work experience.

• Have a professional track record of bringing complex opto-electronic systems from prototype to mass production.

• Have mastered Opto-Mechanical Design Challenges, e.g. thermal management for high-power sensors or precise mechanical mounting for optical alignment

• Possess a deep understanding of the "physics of imaging," ranging from lens selection and MTF characteristics to CMOS sensor architecture, quantum efficiency, and noise sources.

• Understand system-level synchronization, knowing how to utilize PTP, PPS, or hardware triggers (Hsync, Vsync) to perfectly align image capture with other sensors and compute modules.

• Are proficient in languanges like C/C++ or Rust for low-level firmware development or hardware-software interface debugging.

  Nice to Have

• Have brought hardware to life using Verilog, SystemVerilog, VHDL or similar, dealing with high-bandwidth data streams, video processing pipelines, and sensor interfaces on the lowest level.

• Hands-on experience designing and debugging PCBs for high-bandwidth image sensors, including managing signal integrity for MIPI CSI-2, LVDS, SLVS-EC links, or similar.

• Experience with Optical Design Software (e.g., Zemax, Code V, or equivalent) and a familiarity with ray tracing, lens curvature, or custom glass specification.

• Experience writing Linux Kernel Drivers or working with V4L2 or similar frameworks to interface with our sensors

• Exposure to Computer Vision or AI pipelines giving you an understanding of how the images you capture are consumed by Helsing’s downstream algorithms.

• Experience with thermal imaging designing, calibrating, and programming LWIR cameras.

The impact you will make

As a Scientific Electronics Engineer, you will play a key role in bridging hardware and software for experimental setups. You will design, develop and integrate low-voltage electronics, microcontrollers and FPGA systems into complex experiments, while creating GUIs and software tools to control and monitor them. Working with Tango Controls, Taranta or similar frameworks, you will ensure seamless communication between devices and software.

Your responsibilities

• Collaborate closely with Scientists and Engineers to design, develop and implement experimental equipment and setups
• Program and develop user interfaces (GUIs) using PyQt or similar frameworks to control experimental devices and systems
• Integrate microcontrollers, FPGA boards and low-voltage electronics into software systems for experimental setups
• Work with Tango Controls, Taranta or similar control frameworks to interface hardware with software
• Monitor, analyze and process TTL signals for triggering cameras and other devices, including noise reduction and signal integrity verification
• Work with sensors, instrumentation and data acquisition systems to ensure reliable and accurate signal transmission and timing
• Assemble, install and commission electronics and software systems for data acquisition and control onsite
• Write clear and detailed documentation including software specifications, deployment instructions, troubleshooting guides and signal processing reports
• Contribute to the Engineering Quality Management System by creating procedural documentation and establishing engineering best practices
• Provide hands-on support to the science team during setup phases and experimental campaigns

What you bring

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field (e.g., Electronics, Mechatronics, Control Systems)
• Practical experience with low-voltage electronics, microcontrollers, FPGA and embedded systems.
• Knowledge of PCB design tools such as KiCad, Eagle or Altium Designer, including schematic capture, PCB layout and design for manufacturing considerations
• Strong software skills in Python (including OOP) and experience developing GUIs with PyQt or similar tools

The Role 

The Senior Systems Software Engineer will be a member of the core team building the Quantum Key Distribution system. The focus is on high-performance Python services on Linux, algorithm optimization and acceleration (also via hardware offload), and the role spans defining software architecture, integrating with FPGA/embedded subsystems, and turning requirements into reliable, observable software.  

The Senior Systems Software Engineer leads and co-owns the overall internal QKD software architecture and client-facing software API. By setting engineering standards, mentoring, and unblocking delivery, they ensure predictable releases and a strong execution cadence. 

The Responsibilities 

The Senior Systems Software Engineer should expect to work in the following activities. 

• System architecture
  • Leading and co-owning the QKD software architecture: control plane services, key sifting/postprocessing integration, configuration management, monitoring, and external interfaces 
  • Defining module boundaries and service APIs; evolving the system toward clear data/control-plane separation 

• Efficient implementation and hardware/software integration
  • Designing and implementing high-performance Python services on Linux (asyncio, WebSockets, NumPy); profiling and tuning for latency and throughput
  • Developing, profiling, and optimizing QKD sifting and postprocessing algorithms (signal handling/processing, error correction/information reconciliation, LDPC, privacy amplification) to maximize key rate and minimize end-to-end latency; applying algorithmic improvements and implementation techniques (vectorization, concurrency/async, memory/layout tuning, C/C++ extensions, SIMD/CUDA/GPU/FPGA offload where appropriate)
  • Defining and maintaining robust interfaces with embedded/FPGA system components over UART/USB/PCIe/Ethernet; respecting realtime constraints and failure modes

• 5+ years of Python development; 3+ years leading or co‑owning service/system architecture for a hardware‑first product 

• Strong Linux async Python (asyncio, WebSockets), concurrency (threads/processes), profiling/tuning 

• Proven custom hardware integration (MCU, FPGA) over UART/USB/PCIe/Ethernet 

• CI/CD with Docker and GitHub Actions; automated testing, static analysis, artifact management 

• Experience with GPU & CUDA acceleration/optimization; SIMD familiarity 

• Production observability (logging/metrics/tracing) and incident/debug practices 

• Working knowledge of relational/key-value/time-series stores (PostgreSQL/Redis/Prometheus)

The Role 

The Senior FPGA Developer will be a member of the core team building the Quantum Key Distribution system. The focus is end‑to‑end RTL ownership on AMD/Xilinx (Artix‑7, Kintex UltraScale): architect, implement, verify, and close timing on high‑rate interfaces and deterministic pipelines. The role also sets engineering discipline for FPGA development and mentors a junior engineer. 

The Senior FPGA Developer owns the FPGA architecture/codebase and collaborates closely with embedded/software to define clean contracts, ensure reliable bring‑up, and deliver reproducible, versioned bitstreams. 

The Responsibilities 

The Senior FPGA Developer should expect to work in the following activities. 

• RTL architecture, interfaces, and rather high-speed datapaths
  • Owning SystemVerilog RTL architecture/implementation for Artix‑7 and Kintex UltraScale (SystemVerilog, Vivado)
  • Implementing DDR3/DDR4 controllers integration, PCIe endpoint/DMA, and Ethernet/SFP paths; evaluating/integrating third‑party MAC/PCS IP
  • Building deterministic acquisition/timing/sifting layers — packetization, buffering, alignment; robust clocking/CDC/reset; custom low‑level protocols —  and bridging them to high‑throughput interfaces (DDR/PCIe)

The Role 

The Electronics Design Engineer will be a member of the hardware team delivering low‑noise, high‑frequency mixed‑signal control and instrumentation for our QKD systems. The role spans end‑to‑end board design in Altium (schematics, layout, DFM/DFT), precision analog signal chains, prototype bring‑up/validation, and, where needed, STM32 (F4/H7) firmware in C for control, calibration, and integration. You will work with existing automated measurement software in Python and extend it where needed, collaborate closely with optics, FPGA, and software, and support manufacturing. 

The Responsibilities 

The Electronics Design Engineer should expect to work in the following activities. 

• Hardware design, prototyping, and validation 
  • Owning hardware architecture and component selection for precision, lownoise, and highfrequency performance 
  • Designing lownoise analog and mixedsignal schematics and PCB layout in Altium 
  • Managing prototype builds and vendors; executing bringup; precision and highfrequency measurements (DC accuracy, noise spectral density, longterm drift, frequency response); lab debug and reworks 
  • Working with existing automated measurement software (Python) and extending it where needed 
• Firmware development on STM32 and interfacing in Python (secondary scope)

The Electronics Design Engineer is expected to have the following qualifications and experience. 

• 5+ years analog/mixedsignal electronics design for R&D/instrumentation; strong Altium for schematics and PCB layout; DFM/DFT 

• Deep analog fundamentals: lownoise signal chains (e.g., highfrequency TIAs/preamps, ADC drivers, antialiasing/reconstruction filters), precision references/measurements, grounding/guarding/shielding, lowleakage layout 

• Ability to set/close noise and error budgets; tolerance/Monte Carlo and worstcase analysis; SPICEclass simulation (LTspice/PSPICE, etc.) 

• Lab expertise: precision/HF measurements (DC accuracy, noise spectral density, longterm drift, frequency response, temperature dependency); oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers; VNA as applicable 

• Awareness of EMC/EMI and safety constraints; designforcompliance and precompliance testing

• Solid understanding of robotics perception systems, including SLAM, visual odometry, and inertial navigation
• Proficiency with ROS2 and simulation tools for algorithm validation
• Experience with sensor calibration and synchronization (LiDAR, camera, IMU, GNSS, radar)
• Strong foundation in linear algebra, probability, and 3D geometry
• Proficiency with Linux systems, version control, CI/CD, and software engineering best practices in a robotics context
• Self-motivated, organized, and proactive work style

• Proficiency in Python, Rust or CUDA programming
• Knowledge of real-time embedded systems and optimization for edge computing platforms (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson, FPGA)
