About the team:
The AML Operations team takes care of the operational aspects of financial crime risk identification matters for Luno's global business. Our mission is to create a world class compliance experience for Luno as well as our customers. We make sure we have the processes and information available that enable us to truly understand our customer risk, we monitor for any external red flags customers may raise when they use Luno and we deal with any questions our business or customers may have on what good looks like. We operate in regional teams around the world with our central team in South Africa.
The role in a nutshell:
You will form part of the Anti-Money Laundering (“AML”) Operations team based in South Africa, and you will report to the AML Operations - Transaction Monitoring Team Lead. Our AML Operations team looks after our global business and consists of a growing team of enthusiastic, energetic Lunauts. You will work in a fast paced environment, collaborating with other business units, including Engineering, Product and Legal teams, servicing the business on an international level together with the teams from Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and the United States.
Your mission will be:
- Agile execution on key projects and operational delivery of work within the Transaction Monitoring Team, specifically the execution of transaction monitoring alerts, regulatory reporting activities and regulatory requests.
- Knowledge you are required to have and apply
- Working on problems that are varied and which require a review of different factors, applying learned techniques and contributing to analysis and investigation to solve problems for the team, within the AML Policy framework and overall Risk Management and Compliance Programme (“RMCP”).
- Vetting your own work and delivery, communicating progress and escalating blockers to the team
- Supporting internal compliance audits
- Understanding AML regulations and developments in legislation, and pointing out when you suspect that Luno may be in breach of regulations
- Investigate, Analyse & Execute:
- Creating initial reports/analysis for review
- Attending to all aspects relating to Travel Rule including customer communications, virtual asset service provider (VASP) due diligence and queue review
- Navigating and using Chainalysis Reactor effectively to review and assess customer transaction alerts
- Managing and drafting responses to standard and ad hoc regulatory requests, as well as to banking partners and other ad-hoc requests for information
- Assisting with in depth transactional investigations into customer profiles
- Managing customer exits as a result of transactional reviews
- Finalising and filing reports (subject to review) in respect of outbound regulatory reporting in conjunction with the relevant Money Laundering Reporting Officer (“MLRO”)
- Technological Expertise: Using internal investigation/analytical tools e.g. Chainalysis KYT, Chainalysis Reactor and ComplyAdvantage, to a basic level to conduct in depth investigations or analysis
- Reporting Writing & Key Risk Indicator (KRI) Management: Compiling clear and accurate reports based on work performed and to contribute to key risk indicators applicable to the functional area.
- Cross-functional / team collaboration & Written / Oral Communication: Developing stable working relationships, internally and externally
- Business & Anti-Financial Crime Strategic Goals: Providing insights that contribute to the team's strategic direction and ability to understand Luno's function/department strategy.
A little about you:
- Tertiary Education, to the equivalent of graduate
- A minimum of 3 years work experience in an Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Terrorist Financing related field
- Strong analytical mindset
- Ability to adapt within a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail and experience in process writing and documenting outcomes of reviews and investigations
- High proficiency in English (please ensure that your application is in English)

About the team:
The Cloud Security team at Luno is responsible for identifying security threats and improvement areas within our cloud hosted resources, and ensuring that we both strive to implement best practices everywhere and detect any deviations. This team works closely with engineering and IT operations to ensure the best security practices are followed in both areas of the business.
About the role:
We're looking for a AWS Cloud Security Analyst to be a force multiplier across the organisation, someone who brings deep cloud security expertise, strong architectural thinking, and the confidence to challenge assumptions when needed.You’ll work hands-on across our AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD and developer environments, surfacing risks early, designing secure patterns, automating controls, and strengthening the foundational security posture that underpins a global crypto exchange.This is a role for someone who wants to build, influence, advise, and elevate — not just run scanners.
Your mission will be:
- Continuously assess and uplift the security posture of our AWS and Kubernetes environments through automation and secure-by-design principles.
- Partner closely with Engineering, SRE, and IT Ops to deliver practical, business-enabling security solutions — not blockers.
- Analyse existing infrastructure and microservice architectures, highlight systemic risks, and define secure patterns that scale.
- Lead security input across new projects from design → delivery, ensuring resilient architectures and guardrails are in place early.
- Develop proof-of-concepts, hardening strategies, and safe rollout plans for improvements.
- Strengthen detection and response capabilities by improving security telemetry, triage, anomaly detection, and automation
- Advanced AWS expertise — ideally with Professional or Specialty certifications.
- Strong experience in Kubernetes, cluster security, and containerised workloads.
- Background in Cloud Engineering / SRE / DevOps / Systems with strong security instincts.
- Proficiency in automation and scripting (Python preferred).

The role in a nutshell:
As a Quantitative Software Engineer (Quant Dev) at Luno, you will design, build, and operate the high-performance systems and mathematical models that underpin our trading, pricing, and market-making capabilities.
You will sit at the intersection of quantitative research and production engineering, translating quantitative ideas, models, and strategies into robust, low-latency, production-grade systems that operate reliably in a 24/7 global market. Your work will directly impact liquidity, pricing quality, risk management, and customer outcomes.
Your mission will be:
Quantitative Strategy Engineering
- Partner closely with quantitative researchers to implement, optimise, and productionise trading and pricing models.
- Translate mathematical models, research prototypes, and proofs-of-concept into scalable, reliable production systems.
- Validate assumptions, edge cases, and numerical stability when moving models from research to live environments.
Trading & Market Systems
- Build and evolve market-making, pricing, and execution logic across crypto markets.
- Develop automated internal transfer, rebalancing, and hedging mechanisms.
- Configuration: Add and refine console parameters to optimise for volume, spread, profit, or rebalancing.
Performance, Quality & Risk
- Profile, benchmark, and optimise code paths critical to trading performance.
- Implement regression testing, simulation, and backtesting frameworks to ensure correctness and risk controls.
- Ensure strategies and systems meet governance, auditability, and compliance requirements.
Ownership & Delivery
- Own initiatives end-to-end: design, implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
- Align technical delivery with OKRs and broader Treasury / Trading objectives.
- Work closely with Product and Engineering Managers to shape realistic priorities and timelines.
Collaboration & Coaching
- Act as a bridge between quantitative research and engineering teams.
- Mentor engineers on quantitative systems, numerical correctness, and best practices in trading system design.
- Contribute to raising the overall bar for engineering excellence within the team.
A little about you
Experience
- Proven experience as a software engineer, with exposure to or strong interest in quantitative finance, trading systems, or financial infrastructure.
- Experience working with trading models, pricing systems, or data-driven decision engines is a strong advantage.
Technical Strength
- Strong programming skills, particularly in Python, with solid foundations in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Experience writing production-grade, performance-sensitive systems.
- Familiarity with numerical computing, modelling, or statistical techniques is beneficial.
Quantitative Mindset
- Comfortable working with mathematical models and translating them into software.
- Able to reason about trade-offs between model sophistication, performance, and operational risk.
