Key Responsibilities

• Ensure high availability and maximum uptime in SaaS environments by proactively monitoring and managing infrastructure, applications, and network systems using tools like Zabbix, Grafana, Prometheus, Sumo Logic, and Amazon CloudWatch.
• Proactively identify anomalies, threshold breaches, and performance bottlenecks to prevent potential incidents.

Required Qualifications

• Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VPN concepts
• Strong knowledge of operating systems, particularly Linux and Windows environments

About the Role

Workato is looking for a Principal Technical Architect, AI to join as a Field Specialist operating at the intersection of applied AI engineering and customer-facing technical strategy. This is a dual-mandate role with an approximately equal split:

Mandate 1 – AI Field Specialist (Customer-facing): You will work directly with enterprise customers and prospects in pre-sales and post-sales engagements to define and architect their AI strategies on Workato. This includes designing agentic automation solutions, advising on the latest approaches and best practices, scoping AI agent implementations, and helping customers move from proof-of-concept to production-grade autonomous systems.

AI Field Specialist

• Support as an expert AI architect in strategic enterprise engagements: roadmapping customer AI agent use cases and delivering technical deep-dives that demonstrate Workato's agentic capabilities.
• Lead architecture workshops with enterprise customers to define their AI automation strategy, including agent design, integration patterns, and governance frameworks.
• Advise customers on applied AI best practices: prompt engineering and agent orchestration patterns, evaluation and testing strategies for agent systems, confidence calibration, human-in-the-loop design, and continuous learning loops.

• Architect and implement core subsystems of the autonomous CS agent platform, including memory layers, the agent orchestration layer, and the decision trace architecture.
• Design and build a Customer Knowledge Graph as a structured, semantic network that models customers, users, policies, decisions, and operational artifacts as interconnected entities and relationships, enabling queryable representation of contextual states, and policy evaluations for governance, traceability, and decision optimization.
• Implement the confidence-based autonomy framework, including precedent matching, confidence scoring (precedent match, pattern recognition, data completeness, policy clarity), and policy-governed escalation routing.
• Define and design infrastructure architecture to ensure optimal performance and latency.

• Establish evaluation frameworks: define metrics for decision quality, context accuracy, and learning velocity (autonomous threshold increases month over month).

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

• B.Tech/BE or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field. 
• 15+ years of total relevant experience in enterprise software architecture, design, and implementation.
• 8+ years of hands-on experience with Integration Platforms (MuleSoft, TIBCO, Oracle SOA, webMethods, or similar). Deep familiarity with iPaaS architecture patterns is essential.
• 2+ years of applied AI/Agents engineering experience, specifically in building systems that leverage LLMs and agent frameworks, orchestrating them into production applications.

Applied AI & Agent Architecture (Must-Have)

• Hands-on experience designing and building AI agent systems: multi-step reasoning pipelines, tool-use orchestration, and autonomous execution frameworks.

We are currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend to join the AI Platform team, which powers intelligent experiences across our AI products.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll design, build, and ship services across a distributed microservices platform that supports capabilities such as document extraction, portfolio chat, and semantic retrieval capabilities. You’ll work across backend services, cloud-native data systems, async processing, and real-time streaming infrastructure, collaborating closely with frontend, product, and AI/ML engineers to deliver reliable and scalable backend systems.

Staff Software Engineer, Backend

You’ll be a staff-level backend engineer who builds and operates the services that power our core product experiences. This is a hands-on role focused on designing reliable APIs and event-driven systems, writing and reviewing production code, and improving performance and scalability over time. You’ll work closely with Product, Data, Infrastructure/SRE, and Security to deliver well-scoped solutions that are safe to run in production. • Improve methodologies and systems for tracking engineering metrics, system health, team performance, and developer productivity.
• Define, track, and optimize KPIs such as system performance, transaction success rates, infrastructure efficiency, cost optimization, and team velocity.
• Optimize cloud infrastructure usage and costs while maintaining performance, reliability, and security standards.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Sales, Marketing, and Business stakeholders to ensure engineering delivery aligns with company priorities and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure systems are secure-by-design, with strong ownership of data privacy, fraud prevention, and regulatory readiness.
• Build and maintain long-term technical and architectural roadmaps to keep the platform ahead of industry and technology trends.
• Foster a high-trust, high-performance engineering culture grounded in accountability, autonomy, continuous learning, and operational excellence.
• Contribute to broader company-wide engineering initiatives across financial services and business tooling (e.g., Payment,  lending, savings, deposits, cards, and business management platforms) to elevate the overall engineering organization.

To succeed in this role, we think you should have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 12-15 years of hands-on software development experience, including 5+ years of successfully leading engineering teams and driving large-scale technical initiatives
• Significant prior experience as a Software Engineer, with a strong track record of designing scalable systems and operating in a software architecture capacity (approximately 60/40 technical and people leadership).
• Strong backend engineering expertise, with practical experience deploying production systems (e.g., using Spring Boot or similar modern backend frameworks); frontend exposure is a plus.
• Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, deployment systems, and managing technical debt at scale.
• Demonstrated ability to lead managers and multiple cross-functional teams simultaneously in complex, fast-paced environments.
• Prior experience managing distributed and remote teams across multiple geographies.
• Strong experience with agile methodologies, sprint planning, and efficient technical resource management.
• Proven track record of mentoring, performance management, and developing high-performing engineering teams.

About the role
As the Principal Software Engineer, you will be the technical liaison for the team and guide them in all technical aspects of product development. Provide technical thought leadership and deliver significant impact to the business product value, by addressing complex business wide problems using your technology expertise. You will also be responsible for setting the strategic direction by identifying technology and process changes that deliver long term benefits and drive activity to implement changes across the product.
