About the Role

We're seeking a hands-on VPN Backend Architect (Golang) to lead our backend team while spending 70% of your time writing Golang code. You'll set technical direction for our backend platform serving millions of users, guide an engineering team, and own architecture decisions for distributed services that must be fast, reliable, and secure at scale.

This role suits someone who wants to design secure, scalable systems and write the code that runs them. 

What You'll Do

• Define and evolve the architecture of our backend platform serving connections from millions of users
• Design and build highly available distributed services in Golang while setting technical direction on scalability, reliability, and performance targets  
• Lead code reviews and champion testing discipline, clean architecture, and engineering best practices across the team
• Partner with the SDK team to integrate client features cleanly into backend systems and deliver end-to-end functionality
• Mentor engineers and grow the technical depth of the team while collaborating with security, infrastructure, and product teams
• Drive the team to meet performance targets and ship reliable products that protect users at scale

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
• 8+ years of backend engineering & architecture experience with 5+ years in Golang
• Proven track record designing and operating distributed systems at scale with deep understanding of networking protocols (IP, TCP, UDP, HTTP/HTTPS, DNS)
• Hands-on experience with VPN protocols (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPsec), tunneling, NAT traversal, and low-latency networking
• Production experience on AWS (EC2, EKS, S3, Aurora/RDS) with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and strong Linux development background
• Working knowledge of cryptography fundamentals, threat modeling methodologies, secure coding practices, and strong API design skills

Bonus Points

• Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
• Network performance tuning and optimization experience with knowledge of Python and Java
• Experience with NoSQL databases and familiarity with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)

As a Senior Site Reliabiity Engineer at Bolt you will lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of highly reliable and scalable systems infrastructure, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure system reliability, performance optimization, and continuous improvement.

• Leading the design, implementation, automation and maintenance of highly reliable and scalable Database Systems infrastructure. Planning for future database growth and scalability, ensuring the architecture supports business needs.
• Participating in on-call activities for the most critical parts of the infrastructure, helping to solve incidents in a no-blaming culture.
• Performing Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and leading incident response by compiling thorough postmortems and implementing preventive measures. Identifying performance bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the system and implementing solutions to optimize database configurations and performance, including SQL queries and indexes optimization.
• Ensuring all core services are properly measured, monitored, and covered by alerting systems.

• You have proven track record in systems engineering.
• Solid experience with Relational Database Management Systems (e.g. MySQL). Knowledge of NewSQL and NoSQL Databases is beneficial.
• Strong Linux troubleshooting expertise (including networking, file systems, security and the kernel), as well as a solid understanding of large-scale distributed systems.
• Proficient coding skills (preferably Python, Go, Rust or Bash), along with experience in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and infrastructure automation tools such as Terraform and Ansible.

About the role

You'll join one of several teams building the low-level systems behind CAST AI's multi-cloud automation platform. The work sits at the intersection of Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, and Linux.

Depending on your strengths, you'll work in one of these areas:

• Cluster and node lifecycle - custom node bootstrapping across AWS, GCP, and Azure. Controllers and operators managing full node lifecycle. Bridging the gap between autoscaler decisions and running VMs - including working around limitations of managed Kubernetes platforms like EKS, GKE, and AKS.
• Cross-cloud provisioning - orchestrating infrastructure across regions and clouds. Workflow orchestration, provisioning integrations, networking and identity across cloud boundaries.
• Live container migration - zero-downtime relocation of running containers using CRIU checkpoint/restore, custom CRI-O and runc forks, and forked cloud CNI plugins. Memory page transfer, TCP session migration, process-level checkpoint/restore. Kernel-level Linux engineering applied to Kubernetes.
• Storage optimization - dynamic volume rightsizing, BtrFS compression, custom CSI drivers. Full storage stack from cloud disk APIs through filesystem internals to Kubernetes PV/PVC lifecycle.

Your Qualifications:

• Cloud & Container Mastery: Extensive experience with GCP permissions and security configurations within Kubernetes, Azure, and on-prem environments.

• Technical Depth: High proficiency in Intrusion Detection, Exploit Dev, Linux Operations and Security Understanding

• Security Architecture: Proven ability to identify gaps in cloud designs and recommend enhancements for authentication, authorization, and bastion host setups.

• Communication: Ability to distill complex security risks into actionable insights for both technical peers and non-technical stakeholders.

• Autonomy: Proven track record of managing large projects with complex deliverables and foreseeing potential roadblocks before they manifest.

Standout Qualities:

• Certifications: Possession of industry-recognized credentials such as CISSP, Google Security Engineer or GIAC.

• Operational Excellence: Deep hands-on experience with (Open Source) SIEM solutions and Google Security Operations or Google Security Command Center
