About Pioneering Intelligence
Pioneering Intelligence builds on Flagship Pioneering's legacy of founding cutting-edge science and computational ventures, harnessing recent advances in AI, machine learning, and data to accelerate fundamental research and create a portfolio of AI-first companies. As part of Flagship's integrated model of science, entrepreneurship, and capital, it transforms breakthrough ideas into world-changing companies, elevating the AI advances happening across the ecosystem in human health, sustainability, and beyond.
The Role
The Pioneering Intelligence team at Flagship Pioneering builds the digital and AI foundation that accelerates the creation and growth of our companies. We are seeking a Vice President of Engineering to lead a medium sized team of Principal Software Engineers, each operating as the technical authority for their own product area.
This is a non-traditional engineering leadership role. Rather than managing a layered organization, you will build and support a team composed entirely of senior individual contributors operating as technical leads at the highest level. Each engineer owns end-to-end technical decisions, builds hands-on, and engages directly with scientific users. Your job is not to manage their work but to set the conditions in which exceptional engineers do their best work, remove obstacles, raise the collective bar, and translate technical strategy into organizational direction.
You remain technically active. You will contribute to architectural decisions, review complex system designs, and stay close enough to the work to lead credibly. You spend roughly 25% of your time in hands-on technical work. The rest is spent on strategy, people, and organizational leadership: building the team, aligning with product leadership, representing the function to senior stakeholders, and driving the conditions for fast, high-quality delivery across the portfolio.
The model is intentionally fluid. Principal Engineers on this team may move between pure IC work and the formal coordination of other resources as project needs evolve, including the management of fully embedded software engineering contractors. It is the VP who balances resources across all teams and projects, in close collaboration with product and strategy leads, ensuring the right people are working on the right things at the right time.
You will work in close partnership with product and strategy leads and alongside a team of peers who expect the same rigor and accountability from you that you expect from them.

Your Impact at LILA
Join us in shaping the future of science! We are seeking Staff, Senior II, and Senior I Software Engineers with either frontend or backend experience to join our software org, where you’ll collaborate with software engineers, lab scientists, and machine learning engineers to build cutting-edge tools for automated scientific analysis and more. Our teams span across App, Data, SSR, and LaS with a strong emphasis on Python development for scientific applications. If you thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and bring best practices in git, development workflows, and user-centered design, we want to hear from you!
Our Software Teams
The Application Team (App)- They build the operating system for AI-driven science. Their platform unifies Machine Learning, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Software into one AI-native experience — where a scientist can go from hypothesis to experiment to result in a single conversation. They ship the agents, the integrations, and the interfaces that make that possible.
The Scientific System of Record Team (SSR) - They build the memory layer for Lila's operations. It answers two questions:what did we plan to build? and what actually happened? These systems connect scientific intent to physical reality. Together with the data and automation teams, their systems ensure reproducibility and close the Design-Build-Test-Learn (DBTL) loop.
The Lab as Software Team (LaS)- They act as the physical and virtual execution layer for Lila's AI-driven science. This connects the Lila App to AI Science Factories (AISFs), the mechanism through which experiments are dispatched to real instruments. This team owns the full stack of lab integration: orchestration of labflows, instrument integrations, bi-directional data transfer, and the UI/UX that AI scientists and operators use to interact with the lab.
The Data Platform Team (Data)- They build and support the data systems that underpins Lila's AI Science Factory™. Every experiment run in our labs, every measurement from an instrument, and every signal from our operational systems flows through the platform they build. Their work spans real-time ingestion, large-scale analytical storage, workflow orchestration, and the self-service tools scientists, engineers, and ML teams use to go from raw measurements to discoveries. They build the data backbone of Scientific Superintelligence™, so the science moves faster and each experiment makes the next one smarter.

We're building a talent-dense, high-agency AI safety team at Lila that will engage all core teams within the organization (science, model training, lab integration, etc.), to prepare for risks from scientific superintelligence. The initial focus of this team will be to build and implement a bespoke safety strategy for Lila, tailored to its specific goals and deployment strategies. This will involve technical safety strategy development, broader ecosystem engagement, safety-focused evaluations, safety systems to mitigate risks, and a safety research agenda that explores longer-term needs such as oversight of superintelligent scientific systems.
We’re seeking a Technical Mitigations Lead, to lead the build out of safety systems at Lila for the safe deployment of our scientific capabilities to the world. Given the novelty of Lila’s workflows, integrating frontier-class language models with narrow scientific tools and lab-based automation, this role will require the design and deployment of technical safeguards beyond the current state-of-the-art.
We expect the person in this role to start off the initial mitigations build-out, and then slowly build a team to support this function.

Iterative Health is a healthcare technology and services company powering the acceleration of clinical research to transform patient outcomes. The Iterative Health Site Network is a premier network of 100+ clinical research sites across the US and Europe, accelerating the path to market for novel therapies. By combining deep expertise in clinical trials with cutting-edge AI, we empower research teams and study sponsors to expand and expedite access to novel therapeutics for patients in need.
About the Role
Accelerating clinical research is one of the defining challenges in healthcare. Promising therapies exist that patients can't access because the operational infrastructure to run clinical trials efficiently doesn't exist yet. We're building it. That means designing technology systems that bring order to a fragmented landscape of clinical data sources, automating the operational work that slows trials down, and turning real-world clinical data into a foundation for predictive intelligence.
We're building a uniquely valuable data asset: real-world patient and research data flowing across 80+ trial sites, spanning dozens of EHRs and clinical systems, focused on patient populations that are chronically underserved by existing clinical research infrastructure. Your job is to build the pipelines, data models, and AI infrastructure that make this asset real, from ingestion and normalization through to the systems that power predictions on top of it. You'll own data quality and observability as foundational engineering problems. You'll also have a direct hand in shaping how this data drives our AI strategy, what we model, what we predict, and what becomes possible.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants to be part of a small, fast-moving engineering team at a formative stage. You'll shape what gets built, how decisions get made, and what the team becomes.

That means designing technology systems that bring order to a fragmented landscape of clinical data sources, automating the operational work that slows trials down, and turning real-world clinical data into a foundation for predictive intelligence.
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to own the design and implementation of the core systems that make this possible. This means building robust integrations across a complex, fragmented landscape of EHRs, CTMS platforms, and clinical data sources, each with its own data models, access patterns, and operational constraints. It also means building the data infrastructure that powers our predictive capabilities: the pipelines, feature stores, and training infrastructure that allow us to move from raw clinical data to models that meaningfully improve trial execution. This is a generalist role for someone who thinks in systems. You'll move between architecture and implementation, between integration engineering and ML infrastructure, between defining technical strategy and writing the code that proves it out. The problems are genuinely hard, largely unsolved, and what you build will matter.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants to be a part of a small, fast moving engineering team at a formative stage. You'll shape what gets built, how decisions get made, and what the team becomes.
