About the team:

The AI & ML Products Development department is responsible for building the platform for ML Services products for IONOS Cloud customers, as well as other companies in the United Internet group.

Our most recent product development features integration of GenerativeAI foundational models, LLMs and others. We run foundational models on prem in our cloud, such as Meta’s Llama, Mistral or StableDiffusion and also VectorDBs and offer them via APIs to our cloud customers.

Role Overview

We are looking for a proactive and experienced Fullstack Java Developer to help migrate existing Node.js backend services to a robust Java-based architecture. This role is ideal for someone with a strong backend focus on Java, while also being comfortable working across the stack with modern frontend technologies like React or Angular. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable solutions, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring seamless integration across systems. You will be part of the Infra team within the Infra & Orch Group, which focuses on developing tools and processes for installing, configuring, and managing our Partner’s products. The Legion application is a high-performance data-driven Java enterprise application that implements sophisticated scheduling and optimization algorithms. It also provides the necessary endpoints for our Web and mobile frontend applications. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be a member of the team responsible for the implementation and evolution of this application. • Problem-solving: Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and debug complex, multi-layered systems independently.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to document technical decisions clearly for both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
• Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

• AI-native workflow: You've gone beyond autocomplete — you use AI for architecture brainstorming, test generation, spec drafting, PR summaries, and are actively experimenting with agentic coding tools.
• Workforce management or HCM domain experience: Familiarity with time-and-attendance, payroll, scheduling, or labor compliance systems is a significant advantage.
• Frontend exposure: Working knowledge of JavaScript and either Angular or React.
• Leadership track record: Experience informally leading feature teams, running design reviews, or serving as a technical point of contact for a product area.
• Performance engineering: Prior work on query optimization, caching strategies, or throughput/latency improvements in high-volume applications.
• Agile fluency: Comfortable operating in fast-paced sprint cycles with evolving requirements.
• Integrity and judgment: Demonstrated ethical behavior and sound judgment, including when evaluating AI-generated outputs for correctness, bias, and security implications.

In your interviews, we'll ask you to describe:

• Which AI coding tools you use and how frequently.
• A specific example where an AI tool helped you design, refactor, or debug something non-trivially.
• How you validate and review AI-generated code to catch errors, security issues, or performance problems.
• Your view on the limits of current AI coding assistants and where human judgment remains essential.

We are not looking for performative AI enthusiasm. We are looking for engineers who have genuinely integrated these tools into their craft and can think critically about their strengths and failure modes.

As a hybrid employer in Bucharest, Romania, pay for positions is determined using local, national, and industry-specific survey data.
