JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Training Instructor
Reports to: Training Manager
FLSA Status: Exempt
Division: HMC
Department: Training
Location(s): San Diego
POSITION SUMMARY: With minimal supervision provides a comprehensive learning and development program for the technical employee that enhances knowledge, skills, and productivity. Develops and designs, organizes and implements and conducts training programs. Champions a continuous learning environment. This role is based in San Diego California, with extensive travel required to Hawaii to conduct technical, operation and maintenance training for customers and technicians, as directed by management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Conduct technical training to include but not limited to applied electrical, engines/powertrain, hydraulics and applied failure analysis,
- Assists with creating a skills database and tracking training progress.
- Help coordinate TCDP (Technician Career Development Plan).
- Helps coordinate skills inventories for employees to identify training gaps (TCDP and HTCP).
- Designs curricula, class materials and facilitate classes according to the skills inventory results and requests by management.
- Works with key company personnel in developing class schedules.
- Attends necessary classes to become proficient within his/her learning plan.
- Keeps informed with new products and conducts NPI courses.
- Coordinates alternative training delivery methods such as computer-based training programs, web deliverable training programs and distance learning programs for companywide learning programs.
- Provides customer training as well as internal training.
- Conduct safety training as required such as lock out tag out.
- Perform any job that may be assigned as necessary to meet the company, department or individual goals and objectives.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Must have associate’s degree (AA/AS) or equivalent.
- Must have minimum 5 years’ technical training experience.
- Must obtain Caterpillar CIAP certification (Company Supported Program) within two years of employment.
- Must have proven written and oral communication skills.
- Must have proven presentation skills with the ability to answer questions of Management, staff, employees or customers.
- Must have strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Must be flexible and have a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
- Must be able to work independently or as a member of a team handling multiple projects and meet demanding deadlines.
- Must be available for frequent travel to support regional training initiatives.
- Must have a valid CA Class C Driver’s License, with a clean driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Walking and moving about on foot often through uneven terrain.
- Hands/arms operating equipment, hand and power tools.
- Lifting: Up to 50 lbs. daily, frequent exertion. Raises or lowers miscellaneous equipment parts and tools.
- Handling: Works with hands.
- Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction
- Standing: Remains in standing position if required to perform various functions of the job
- Climbing: In and out of equipment.
- Vision: Reads work tickets, parts and service books and operate heavy equipment.
- Talking: Communicates via telecommunications and in person.
- Sitting: Sits in equipment and vehicles.
- Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist
- Hearing: Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication by radio, phone and in person.
- Laying: Lies in prone position under vehicles and equipment.

Role Overview
We are seeking a technician to support our gasification project in San Bernardino, CA. Our gasification test stand will produce the ‘syngas’ from a biomass source and power our turbine system that produces electricity. You will be working closely with engineering to help configure the system for testing operations. Work will include tube bending, flaring, torque tools, general hand tools, fluid panel assembly, structural assembly, and other responsibilities as they arise.
Responsibilities
- Provide ground system technician support, which involves installing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining industrial tank farm equipment such as pumps, tanks, valves, and plumbing related to the high-pressure and low-pressure nitrogen, oxygen, CO2 and methane gas/liquid ground infrastructure, and other aspects of the site facilities
- Understand and supply industrial packaged gases to production and test consumers, be knowledgeable about pressurized components, and provide end-users insight on how to properly and safely operate pressurized test systems
- Assist with material extrusion and forming machinery assembly, operation, and maintenance.
- Operate and maintain large, complicated facility gas hardware, high-pressure systems and pumps, and other ancillary pressure equipment, including pneumatic systems ranging from vacuum to 20,000psi MEOP
- Collaborate with design/build engineers to understand systems, help influence and execute a preventative maintenance plan, and ensure system changes are approved and documented
- Make repairs and additions to pre-existing piping infrastructure, troubleshoot and fix faulty regulators, valves, gauges, and gauges throughout campus
- Obtain and maintain licenses, operator permits, or certifications as required
- Follow all necessary regulations and appropriate Arbor procedures, including quality policies, safety policies, OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, NFPA, ASME, NEC, etc. standards
Requirements
- Positive attitude and able to work well on a team
- Able to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision
- Able to stay organized with strong attention to detail
- Able to read mechanical and engineering drawings and interpret tolerances (including GD&T)
- Able to read and interpret fluid or electrical schematics
- Skilled with mechanical hand tools
- Knowledge/experience with AN, MS, MP, and Swagelok fluid connections
- Knowledge/experience with cryogenic systems (gaseous and liquid)
- Knowledge/experience working with electrical components and systems
- Proficient computer skills; comfortable with using email and the Microsoft Office suite
Preferred Qualifications
- Able to work at elevated heights occasionally (scissor lifts and articulated boom lifts)
- Physical effort including standing, lifting, and carrying equipment up to 30 lbs. unassisted
- Able to work in outdoor environments as needed
- Ability to work all required shift hours, including overtime and weekends when needed
- Willing to travel for short trips as needed, up to 10% travel

Base Pay: $30.00 - 40.00 USD/hour. The base pay is subject to the applicant's skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location.
