Key Performance Objectives
In the first 12–18 months, success will be measured by your ability to:
- Implement a self-service DevOps platform that allows developers to deploy, test, and monitor applications independently.
- Directly contribute to the design and implementation of core infrastructure, including Kubernetes (EKS), CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code.
- Deliver measurable improvements in deployment frequency, system uptime, and mean time to recovery (MTTR).
- Ensure successful migration and ownership of cloud infrastructure (e.g., EKS) from external vendors to internal teams.
- Drive continuous delivery adoption, including infrastructure-as-code, automated release orchestration, and real-time performance feedback loops.
- Enhance system observability and resilience by leveraging advanced monitoring tools (e.g., New Relic, Dynatrace) and automated alerting for production systems.
- Foster strong cross-functional collaboration with Development, QA, Product, and Security teams to align on delivery goals and operational excellence.
DevOps Strategy & Execution
- Lead the end-to-end design and continuous improvement of DevOps and SRE practices.
- Own CI/CD systems, cloud-native infrastructure, and deployment strategies across environments.
- Actively design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure (AWS, EKS, networking, IAM).
- Write and maintain infrastructure as code (Terraform/CloudFormation).
- Troubleshoot complex production issues and performance bottlenecks.
- Mentor engineers through pairing, code reviews, and hands-on guidance.
- Allocate capacity between support, project work, automation initiatives, and incident response.
- Continue current adoption of infrastructure as code (Terraform/CloudFormation) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker).
- Act as a key partner for Development, QA, and Security teams to streamline release cycles and eliminate delivery bottlenecks.
- Participate in technical architecture reviews and post-mortems to ensure the production readiness of all systems.
Education & Leadership
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
- 5+ years in DevOps or SRE roles, with 3+ years of direct people leadership.
- Mastery of cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and orchestration (Kubernetes).
- Experience with infrastructure tools (Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Skilled in CI/CD systems (Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, CircleCI) and monitoring tools (New Relic, Dynatrace).
- Strong knowledge of configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, or Chef).
- Experience with API Gateway platforms (AWS API Gateway, Apigee).
- Proven ability to use telemetry (logs, traces, metrics) to diagnose and improve system performance.
- Deep understanding of modern deployment strategies, including canary, blue/green, and rolling deployments.
- Willingness to participate in off-hours support rotations, including evenings, weekends, and holidays when needed.
- Committed to continuous improvement, ethical delivery, and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.

Your Impact
As an Infrastructure Architect, you will be responsible for the technical direction, architectural integrity, and operational maturity of Axon’s core infrastructure platforms. This includes ownership of our virtualization environments, storage platforms, cloud infrastructure (Azure and AWS), database services, and foundational platform services that support both corporate IT and product-facing teams.
You will act as the senior technical authority for infrastructure architecture—making design decisions, setting standards, and guiding execution—while remaining hands-on where it matters most. Your work will directly influence how Axon scales its environments, improves reliability, controls cost, and supports business-critical workloads across on-prem and cloud ecosystems.
In this role, you will lead and manage a team of Server and Infrastructure Engineers, providing technical direction, mentoring, and prioritization, while partnering closely with Network Architecture, Platform Engineering, Security, and Product (R&D) teams. You will serve as a key interface between corporate infrastructure and product engineering, ensuring infrastructure solutions are well-architected, secure, and aligned with Axon’s long-term strategy.
This role is ideal for a senior technologist who combines deep infrastructure expertise, architectural thinking, and people leadership, and who is motivated by building scalable, durable platforms rather than just keeping the lights on.
What You’ll Do
Location: Scottsdale, AZ or Boston, MA - Onsite 4x a week
Reporting to: Sr. Manager, Network/Infrastructure
- Own the architecture and technical direction for Axon’s infrastructure platforms, including VMware, storage, cloud (Azure/AWS), databases, and core platform services.
- Lead and manage a team of infrastructure engineers, providing technical guidance, prioritization, and mentorship while ensuring high operational standards.
- Design, review, and approve infrastructure solutions supporting corporate IT and Axon product/R&D teams, balancing scalability, security, reliability, and cost.
- Remain hands-on in critical areas such as virtualization, cloud engineering, storage, and database platforms, serving as a senior escalation point.
- Partner closely with Network, Platform, Security, and Product teams to deliver well-architected, cross-functional solutions.
- Drive infrastructure modernization efforts, including migrations, lifecycle management, technical debt reduction, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and automation.
- Establish standards, documentation, and best practices to improve resilience, observability, and operational maturity.
- Define, implement, and report on key infrastructure metrics and KPIs to provide visibility into platform health, capacity, cost, reliability, and team performance.
- Support planning and execution of infrastructure initiatives aligned with business growth and long-term strategy.
What You Bring
- 8+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, with demonstrated ownership of complex on-prem and cloud environments.
- Deep hands-on expertise with VMware virtualization, enterprise storage, and cloud infrastructure (Azure required; AWS preferred).
- Strong experience with database and platform services, including SQL-based environments.
- Proven experience leading and managing technical infrastructure teams, with a track record of driving results through others.
- Proven experience defining, tracking, and reporting on infrastructure metrics, KPIs, and dashboards for leadership visibility and data-driven decisions.
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation tools (e.g. Terraform, Ansible, GitHub Actions) to deliver repeatable, scalable, and version-controlled infrastructure across hybrid environments.
