About the Team:

The Recipe Management System (RMS) Team is at the heart of CookUnity’s culinary innovation. Our team builds and maintains the systems that chefs rely on to create, manage, and scale their recipes seamlessly. RMS is a core part of CookUnity’s ChefOS Zone, supporting the entire meal lifecycle—from ideation to production—ensuring accuracy in ingredient sourcing, nutritional data, and compliance with dietary preferences.

We work closely with chefs, supply chain teams, and operations to integrate RMS with inventory management, order processing, and fulfillment. Our mission is to empower chefs with intuitive tools while ensuring efficiency and reliability in meal production at scale.

The Role:

We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join our team who can also contribute on dashboards and internal app UIs. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain highly scalable backend services that power CookUnity’s core recipe management functionalities. You will work alongside other talented engineers, product managers, and designers to develop robust and efficient backend systems using Kotlin and Java, leveraging frameworks like Micronaut or Spring Boot and integrating Temporal for workflow automation.

This is an individual contributor (IC) role with a strong focus on backend architecture, performance, and scalability. If you enjoy solving complex problems, optimizing workflows, and working on mission-critical systems, this role is for you!

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services for the service using Kotlin and Java
• Architect scalable, resilient, and maintainable microservices using Micronaut or Spring Boot
• Implement workflow automation and orchestration using Temporal
• Optimize database interactions and performance (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
• Collaborate with frontend engineers, product managers, and designers to build seamless user experiences
• Ensure system reliability and uptime by implementing best practices in observability, logging, and monitoring
• Perform code reviews, contribute to best practices, and mentor junior engineers
• Work closely with DevOps to optimize CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure deployment
• Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and drive innovation within the team

Minimum Requirements:

• 6+ years of backend development experience with Kotlin and/or Java
• Experience working with Micronaut or Spring Boot frameworks
• Hands-on Experience in React & Next.js
• Strong AI coding abilities and good practices
• Strong understanding of microservices architectures and distributed systems
• Proficiency in SQL databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL
• Experience building high-performance, scalable backend systems
• Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for clean, maintainable code
• Solid understanding of RESTful API design and best practices
• Familiarity with cloud services (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Strong communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Fluency with AI engineering tools

Preferred Requirements:

• Experience with message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc.)
• Exposure to GraphQL and event-driven architectures
• Experience in DevOps practices, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code (Terraform)
• Background in food tech, operations, or marketplace platforms

The role  

As a Java Technical Lead, you will play a critical role in a high-impact ERP transformation project, including the design, setup, and migration to a new Dynamics-based platform. 

You bring 5+ years of professional experience, combined with strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and a strategic mindset to guide teams, align stakeholders, and ensure successful delivery in a complex, multi-system environment.

Must have qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following essential qualifications: 

• Proven experience as a Technical Lead or Senior Backend Engineer; 

• Strong experience with Java (8+) and Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring Core, etc.);  

• Solid experience designing and implementing microservices architectures;  

• Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Design (OOD/OOP); 

• Experience or familiarity with .NET ecosystem; 

• Experience with event-driven architectures and message brokers;  

• Hands-on experience with Azure Service Bus or similar messaging services;  

• Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes);  

• Strong experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs;  

• Experience with authentication and authorization (OAuth2, JWT);  

• Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases;  

• Experience in Agile environments and cross-functional teams;  

• Strong communication skills and ability to interact with business stakeholders. 

Nice to have qualifications  

• Experience working with ERP systems at scale (SAP, Dynamics, or similar); 

• Knowledge or experience with Dynamics (X++);  

• Experience with cloud environments (Azure preferred);

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Senior Full-Stack Engineer who can take ownership of the codebase and infrastructure. This isn’t just a “build what you’re told” role—you’ll be the primary technical driver of the platform, making architecture decisions, shipping features end-to-end, and ensuring our systems run reliably in production. You’ll work directly with the founder and have real autonomy to shape the product’s technical direction.

Our Tech Stack

What You’ll Do

• Own the full application lifecycle—backend APIs, frontend UI, database schema, CI/CD pipelines, and production infrastructure on AWS
• Design, develop, and ship new features across the Java/Spring Boot backend and Angular frontend
• Manage and optimize our PostgreSQL database, including schema migrations (Liquibase), query performance tuning, and data integrity
• Maintain and improve AWS infrastructure: EC2, RDS, S3, CloudFront, and related services
• Collaborate directly with the founder to translate business requirements into technical solutions
• Improve code quality through testing, code reviews, refactoring, and documentation
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues quickly and thoroughly
• Evaluate and adopt modern tools, frameworks, and practices to keep the platform competitive
• Leverage AI-powered development tools (e.g., Claude, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate delivery and improve code quality

What We’re Looking For

Required

• 5–8+ years of professional software development experience
• Strong proficiency in Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem (Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA, Spring Security)
• Solid front-end skills with Angular (TypeScript, RxJS, component architecture)
• Deep experience with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases—schema design, migrations, query optimization
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (EC2, RDS, S3, CloudFront, IAM) or comparable cloud platforms
• Comfortable working across the entire stack and owning infrastructure alongside application code
• Strong English communication skills (written and verbal) for daily collaboration
• Self-directed and proactive—you take initiative, flag issues early, and don’t wait to be told what to do
• Available during US business hours (Central Time preferred, but flexible within the Americas)

Nice to Have

• Experience with JHipster-generated applications
• Familiarity with Liquibase for database change management
