What to expect:

We are looking for a Director of Facilities to lead facilities operations across our growing Oxford campus. You will oversee the buildings, infrastructure, services and supplier relationships that support our critical manufacturing, data centre and laboratory environments, ensuring they remain safe, compliant, resilient and ready to support the development of world-leading trapped-ion quantum computers.

This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for complex building systems, vendor management, statutory compliance, space planning and facilities projects. The role will primarily focus on our Oxford site, with scope to support other UK sites and potentially other regional offices in Europe.

What you'll be responsible for:

You will lead the day-to-day and long-term operation of a technically complex site, working closely with stakeholders across Oxford Ionics and IonQ to make sure our facilities can support a fast moving, high growth business.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Overseeing operations across the Oxford campus, including sophisticated electrical, mechanical, process services, HVAC, chilled water, industrial gas, power supply, UPS, generator and control systems

• Managing vendor and service contracts across HVAC, electrical, security and hard and soft FM, including SLA standardisation and supplier performance

• Ensuring strong compliance with UK statutory requirements, including HSE guidelines, fire safety regulations, COSHH and planned maintenance obligations

• Leading, developing and mentoring local Facilities Managers, technicians and vendors, building clear performance metrics and a culture of safety and continuous improvement

• Overseeing space planning, office reconfiguration, relocations, landlord relationships, property management and major infrastructure-heavy fit-out or construction projects

The role is expected to include some after-hours and on-call responsibilities, with oversight of the facilities team and vendor support for 24/7 site assistance. Estimated travel is 20-25%.

Requirements

What you'll need:

To be successful, you will need significant experience leading facilities, property management or corporate real estate operations in technically complex environments. You should bring strong knowledge of UK building regulations, statutory maintenance, hard and soft FM services, supplier management and financial forecasting, alongside the ability to build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders and business leaders.

You’d be a great fit with:

• 15-20 years of progressive experience in facilities management, property management or corporate real estate, including 8-10 years in a multi-site or UK regional leadership role

• Experience managing robust mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems across critical manufacturing, data centre, laboratory, R&D or similarly complex technical environments

• Strong knowledge of UK building regulations, statutory compliance, hard and soft FM services, CMMS systems, UK contract law and service supplier management

• Understanding of construction management, real estate office acquisitions, facility planning, modular furniture selection and installation, building maintenance and project management principles

• A degree in Facilities Management, Building Surveying, Engineering, Business Administration or a related field, with IWFM or MRICS credentials beneficial

Experience working in R&D laboratory spaces such as optics, electronics or cryogenics would be highly relevant. Experience with CAD software would also be useful. We are looking for someone highly motivated, analytical and self-directed, with the ability to take ownership, win buy-in and build productive partnerships across the business.
