We handle the full life cycle of Managed Databases from the APIs which let users create and manage their databases to software that automates the running, upgrading, and health of databases.We are looking for a seasoned engineer to work on a small team focused on Database-as-a-Service products.This role reports to the Senior Engineering Manager of the DBaaS team within the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) organization in Engineering. This role will involve technical leadership to scale our database platform to meet the needs of our growing customer base.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop and enhance customer-facing Managed Database (DBaaS) products, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Caching, Kafka, OpenSearch, and MongoDB.
- Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for MySQL, providing guidance on performance optimization, administration, troubleshooting, and best practices.
- Design and build scalable, resilient backend services for database lifecycle management.
- Own end-to-end technical solutions, from architecture and design through development, deployment, and production support.
- Provide technical leadership across multiple projects and engineering teams.
- Mentor and guide mid-level and junior engineers through code reviews, technical discussions, and best engineering practices.
- Drive improvements in system design, reliability, scalability, availability, performance, and cost optimization.
- Develop and maintain globally distributed systems running in Kubernetes environments.
- Author technical design documents and provide constructive feedback on engineering designs.
- Build and maintain backend APIs using Go (Golang).
- Perform code reviews and promote engineering best practices across the team.
- Act as the last line of technical support for Managed Database (DBaaS) products.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Product Management, Design, and Operations.
- Work with modern cloud-native technologies such as Temporal, gRPC, REST APIs, Kubernetes, Docker, Kafka, Grafana, and other components across the DigitalOcean platform.
- Integrate DBaaS services with various components across the DigitalOcean technology stack.
What You’ll Add to DigitalOcean:

- Provide technical leadership across multiple engineering projects and influence architectural decisions.
- Mentor and guide mid-level and junior engineers through code reviews, technical coaching, and engineering best practices.
- Drive improvements in system scalability, reliability, availability, performance, and cost efficiency.
- Build and maintain globally distributed systems running in Kubernetes environments.
- Author, review, and provide feedback on technical design documents and architecture proposals.
- Develop high-performance backend services and APIs using Go (Golang).
- Design and implement RESTful APIs and gRPC services.
- Provide last-line production support for Managed Database (DBaaS) products, ensuring high availability and rapid incident resolution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional, agile teams including Engineering, Product Management, Design, and Platform teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Leverage modern cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes, Docker, Kafka, Temporal, Grafana, REST, and gRPC to build scalable and reliable systems.
- Integrate services seamlessly with multiple components across the DigitalOcean platform.
- Champion engineering excellence by promoting best practices in system design, operational excellence, code quality, observability, and reliability engineering.
