Role Overview
As a Payroll & People Operations Specialist, you will own end-to-end multi-state payroll and help maintain the accuracy, integrity, and smooth operation of Stride’s HR and payroll processes. This role combines payroll execution, HRIS data management, benefits administration, and responsive employee support in a fast-paced, detail-driven environment.
Responsibilities
- Process end-to-end, multi-state payroll accurately and on schedule for clinical and administrative staff.
- Ensure payroll tax withholdings, garnishments, and benefits deductions and contributions are correct across all four states.
- Audit timesheets and payroll data before each run, investigate discrepancies, and document root causes.
- Calculate and process final pay in compliance with state-specific timing requirements.
- Serve as the primary auditor of the HRIS, maintaining data integrity across the full employee lifecycle.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local wage-and-hour and labor laws, and support updates when regulations change.
- Build and maintain a Payroll Playbook with documented SOPs and backup-ready processes.
- Support internal and external audits, including workers’ compensation and 401(k)/benefits audits.
- Administer employee benefits, including enrollments, qualifying life events, terminations, and open enrollment support.
- Support onboarding, status changes, transfers, and offboarding with accurate and timely system updates.
- Serve as a confidential and responsive point of contact for payroll, benefits, and HR policy questions.
- Prepare recurring and ad hoc payroll and HR reports for leadership and support process improvement initiatives.
Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on payroll experience, including multi-state processing.
- Experience in healthcare, ABA, or a multi-site hourly workforce environment preferred.
- Proficiency with UKG Ready, Gusto, or comparable payroll/HRIS platforms.
- Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis.
- Strong working knowledge of payroll compliance, including FLSA, multi-state wage-and-hour rules, garnishments, and payroll tax.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Clear, professional verbal and written communication.
- High integrity, meticulous attention to detail, and discretion with sensitive information.
- Comfortable working under immovable deadlines and handling time-sensitive situations calmly.
Nice to Have
- FPC, CPP, or SHRM/HRCI certification, or willingness to pursue.
- Experience supporting payroll or people operations in a healthcare organization.
- Familiarity with multi-site employee populations and operationally complex environments.
