Job Title: Delivery Driver / Distribution Assistant (Night Shift)
Location: Kingsway, Dundee, UK
Shift Pattern: 35 hours a week average over a 9 week cycle; 42 hours for 2 weeks, 35 hours for 2 weeks, 28 hours for 5 weeks
DC Thomson media and publishing company is recruiting for a Delivery Driver / Distribution Assistant (Night Shift) to join the team in our Kingsway office in Dundee, UK.
The Night Shift team consists of a versatile group drivers and dispatchers. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to get all round exposure to the dispatch area. Shifts will consist of either single drop driving, dispatch or a combination of both in one shift.
The Distribution Assistant (Night Shift) would suit someone who has driven lorries for a period of time and would like to broaden their skillset to include dispatch. With multiple titles coming off the same line, ample training is provided to accurately and efficiently break down the various products for various branches.
Key Purpose of Role:
- Reporting to the Transport & Distribution Manager, the Transport & Distribution Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the smooth and efficient running of our newspaper dispatch and logistics operations..
- The post holder will be responsible for assisting in the preparation, movement, and distribution of newspapers and related materials, ensuring that all products are handled safely, accurately, and on schedule.
- This role also includes driving Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) to transport goods between sites and external partners, maintaining professional driving standards, and ensuring all relevant qualifications and compliance requirements are met.
- The Transport & Distribution Assistant will contribute to building strong working relationships with wholesaler staff, colleagues, and other partners, ensuring a high standard of service and operational reliability.
Key Deliverables and Accountability:
- Dispatch Operations and Sorting
- Assist with the daily operations within the dispatch facility, sorting newspapers, bundles, and pallets accurately for onward delivery.
- Ensure all items are labelled, stacked, and loaded correctly in line with delivery schedules and safety procedures.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain an efficient flow of products through the dispatch area, minimising errors and delays.
- Material Handling and Dispatch Duties
- Safely move, stack, and organise newsprint reels and other materials within the warehouse and dispatch area.
- Operate handling equipment in line with training and safety regulations, maintaining clean and orderly working conditions.
- Support the maintenance of inventory accuracy through diligent record-keeping and reporting of any damaged or missing items.
- Driving and Deliveries
- Drive HGVs for the timely and safe delivery of goods between company sites, including Aberdeen and Inverness.
- Conduct vehicle checks before and after journeys, ensuring compliance with road safety and company policies.
- Handle goods with care, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism when representing the company on the road and when interacting with customers and partners.
- Compliance and Qualifications
- Keep all professional driving qualifications, including CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence), up to date.
- Follow all transport legislation, company safety policies, and relevant environmental regulations.
- Ensure accurate completion of transport and delivery documentation, including logs, manifests, and delivery notes.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Build and maintain positive relationships with wholesaler staff and other key partners, ensuring effective communication and cooperation.
- Work closely with the Transport & Distribution Manager and team members to support continuous improvement in efficiency, safety, and service.
- Actively participate in team briefings and contribute ideas to enhance operational processes.
Requirements
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Driving and Operational Competence
- Valid HGV licence (Class 1 or 2) with a clean driving record.
- Up-to-date Driver CPC qualification.
- Experience in multi-drop deliveries or logistics operations, ideally within a fast-moving, time-sensitive environment.
- Attention to Detail and Accuracy
- A methodical approach to sorting, loading, and documentation, ensuring accuracy in all dispatch and delivery processes.
- Awareness of the importance of record-keeping, safety compliance, and maintaining service reliability.
- Physical and Practical Capability
- Comfortable with manual handling tasks and able to lift, move, and stack goods safely.
- Good awareness of workplace safety procedures and commitment to maintaining a tidy and hazard-free environment.
