Position Summary

Credence has an immediate need for a Technical Writing Assistant to support U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the development, maintenance, and lifecycle management of agency policy documentation. This is a 100% remote position supporting a mission-critical federal customer.

The ideal candidate should possess exceptional organizational skills and an eye for detail that catches what others miss. Success in this role requires precision over volume — accurate citations, clean formatting, disciplined version control, and clear tracking of where every document stands in the review and approval cycle. The Technical Writing Assistant serves as the day-to-day steward of a large policy library, fielding research requests from government stakeholders, validating the authorities that underpin existing policy, formatting documents to CBP-approved standards, and shepherding materials through routing and concurrence.

Requirements

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the duties listed below:

  • Must be able to maintain the CBP policy library, including document intake, indexing, version control, and archiving of superseded material.
  • Will be responsible for providing responsive customer service to the Security Operations Division (SOD) on policy searches and research inquiries.
  • Will conduct independent research and analysis to support the development of new policy.
  • Will validate references and authorities cited in policy documents and determine whether the scope of expiring policy remains relevant, requires revision, or should be sunset.
  • Will create and track routing sheets, monitoring each document action through review, concurrence, and final approval.
  • Will assist with web content management, including posting, updating, and organizing policy content on CBP sites.
  • Must have the ability to utilize Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro to format documents into CBP-approved formats, applying styles, templates, cross-references, tables of contents, bookmarking, and accessibility remediation.
  • Must have demonstrated experience utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint to create presentations depicting workflows, processes, and organizational charts.
  • Must have prior experience proofreading and copy editing a wide range of materials, including directives, handbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), memoranda, and briefing products.
  • Must maintain working knowledge of a broad range of current guidelines, regulations, policies, and handbooks pertinent to CBP activities.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing or a related field is required.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of relevant technical writing/editing experience.
  • Must have advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word (styles, templates, cross-references, tables of contents, track changes) and Adobe Acrobat Pro (PDF creation, bookmarking, form fields, Section 508 accessibility).
  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, including building workflow diagrams and organizational charts.
  • Must have demonstrated experience maintaining a document, policy, or knowledge library with disciplined version control.
  • Must be able to conduct independent research, validate source authorities, and summarize findings clearly.
  • Must have exceptional proofreading and copy-editing skills, with strong command of grammar, usage, and a recognized style guide.
  • Must be stakeholder engaging, with a service-oriented approach to fielding research requests.
  • Must be able to work well within Teams.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive data.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple concurrent document actions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision in a fully remote setting.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a favorable CBP suitability determination.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience supporting CBP, DHS, or another federal law enforcement or homeland security organization.
  • Familiarity with federal policy document types (directives, handbooks, musters, SOPs, memoranda) and agency policy lifecycle and review processes.
  • Experience with routing sheets, staffing packages, or comparable government concurrence workflows.
  • Experience with SharePoint and web content management systems.
  • Working knowledge of Section 508 / WCAG accessibility requirements for documents and web content.
