Job Role: Mechanical HVAC Design Drafter

Compensation range: $2000 - $3000 / Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 10 AM - 6 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

Who The Client Is: This construction-led design consultancy firm specializes in delivering innovative design solutions and expert advice for fit-outs, refurbishments, and new construction projects. With a unique approach, the company combines expert coordination and offers additional services that exceed the typical scope of traditional design consulting.

Role Overview: The Senior AutoCAD 2D Design Drafter is responsible for preparing, coordinating, and managing high-quality mechanical services drawings and documentation using AutoCAD. This role provides drafting and technical support to engineers during the design and documentation stages of projects, ensuring drawings are accurate, efficient, and compliant with project requirements and standards.

The role requires a strong understanding of building services design, particularly mechanical HVAC systems, and the ability to interpret engineering concepts and translate them into coordinated construction documentation.

Key Responsibilities: 

Drafting and Documentation

  • Prepare detailed 2D AutoCAD drawings for mechanical services, including air conditioning, ventilation, exhaust systems, plant rooms, and ductwork layouts.
  • Produce drawings for concept design, design development, and tender documentation stages.
  • Prepare mechanical layouts, schematics, equipment schedules, and detail drawings based on engineering direction.
  • Update and revise drawings in response to design changes, mark-ups, and coordination feedback.
  • Ensure drawings comply with drafting standards, project requirements, and relevant codes.

Engineering Support

  • Provide drafting support to mechanical engineers during design and coordination processes.
  • Assist engineers in preparing design documentation packages and tender drawings.
  • Convert design sketches, engineering calculations, and mark-ups into clear and accurate drawings.
  • Prepare equipment schedules, legends, and drawing registers.
  • Support engineers with drawing coordination across architectural, structural, electrical, and hydraulic services.

Quality Control

  • Conduct internal drafting reviews to ensure drawings are accurate, coordinated, and ready for issue.
  • Ensure documentation is consistent across the drawing set and aligns with project standards.
  • Identify potential design or coordination issues and escalate them to engineers as required.

Requirements

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in AutoCAD drafting within building services and mechanical HVAC engineering design.
  • Strong proficiency in 2D AutoCAD drafting.
  • Strong Hands-on experience with Revit or BIM coordination.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical building services systems, including ductwork, plant layouts, ventilation systems, and equipment coordination.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering mark-ups, sketches, and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality technical drawings.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Desirable

  • Experience working within engineering consultancies or mechanical contracting environments.
  • Understanding of relevant Australian Standards for mechanical services (e.g., AS1668).
  • Experience preparing tender and construction documentation.
