About this Licensing Analyst role at PPL

PPL · Onsite · London

Licensing Analyst, Licensing
Permanent, Full Time
(Hybrid working role - minimum three office-based days a week in London)

About the team

PPL’s Licensing team licenses the use of recorded music on television, radio and in public performance settings across the UK. We negotiate and agree licence terms with broadcasters and other licensees, ensuring agreements remain fit for purpose as the way music is used continues to evolve. The team’s work helps secure a fair return for PPL’s members, who include record companies and performers, while balancing this with fair and effective terms for licensees.

This role predominantly sits within the TV area of Licensing, supporting negotiations with broadcasters such as the BBC and ITV. The role will also provide support across the wider Licensing team, including radio, public performance and dubbing licensing.

What you’ll be doing:

Reporting into the Television Licensing Manager, you will support PPL’s negotiations with TV broadcasters by providing robust research, insight and analysis to inform licensing proposals, policies and strategies. You will clearly present findings to senior stakeholders, helping to explain audience and music usage trends and how they support effective commercial positions. You will manage a portfolio of customer accounts, maintain regular contact with licensees and their representatives, and proactively identify new licensing opportunities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide robust research, insight and analysis to support the development of licensing proposals and negotiation strategies.

  • Clearly present and explain audience and music usage trends across broadcasters, using analysis to inform commercial positions and support licensing negotiations.

  • Manage a number of ongoing TV licence agreements and monitor compliance with key licence terms, including payment and music reporting obligations.

  • Proactively identify, monitor and contact unlicensed television services that may require a PPL licence, helping to close licensing gaps and increase revenue.

  • Negotiate, implement and manage licences for selected customer accounts, with guidance from the Television Licensing Manager and Head of Television.

  • Support the Television Licensing Manager with invoicing, forecasting and budgeting processes in partnership with Finance.

  • Maintain efficient administrative processes by updating spreadsheets and databases, ensuring relevant information flows between internal departments, licensees and external parties.

  • Support improvements to the team’s analytical capabilities by sharing expertise, mentoring colleagues and using data from across the business to support negotiations.

  • Respond to phone and email enquiries about PPL’s television licences.

  • Contribute to inter-departmental initiatives, including new systems or technologies, ensuring Licensing requirements are captured.

  • Build strong relationships with licensees, their representatives and relevant industry organisations.

What you’ll need:

  • Experience interpreting large and complex datasets to inform business decisions.

  • Strong numeracy skills and advanced Excel capability.

  • An analytical, inquisitive and objective mindset, with strong attention to detail when working with both text and numbers.

  • Experience managing relationships with stakeholders at different levels of seniority.

  • Ability to manage multiple accounts and workstreams simultaneously, prioritising and re-prioritising according to business needs.

  • Understanding of business financials and reporting.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to deliver objectives within agreed timeframes.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence working collaboratively and independently.

  • A proactive approach to self-development and openness to feedback.

  • An interest in the music and media industries, including how technology is changing listening and viewing habits.
