Position Summary:
The Assistant Controller of Fuel & Convenience Store Accounting is responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, controls, and compliance related to fuel operations and convenience store retail activities. This role ensures accurate financial results, margin visibility, inventory integrity, and regulatory compliance while supporting operational leadership with strategic financial insight.


Financial Oversight & Reporting:
•    Direct all accounting activities for fuel purchasing, fuel inventory, fuel margins, and convenience store sales
•    Oversee daily, weekly, and monthly close processes for fuel and retail operations
•    Ensure accurate recording of fuel costs, freight, taxes, surcharges, shrink, and price variances
•    Prepare and review financial statements, margin reports, and profitability analyses by location
•    Develop dashboards and KPIs for fuel and convenience store performance
Fuel & Inventory Accounting
•    Oversee fuel inventory accounting, including book-to-physical reconciliations
•    Monitor fuel gains and losses; investigate and resolve variances
•    Ensure accurate cost-of-goods-sold calculations for fuel and merchandise
•    Collaborate with operations and fuel management teams on inventory controls
Controls, Compliance & Risk Management
•    Design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls over cash, inventory, and fuel transactions
•    Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, environmental fees, and state fuel tax requirements
•    Support internal and external audits, including fuel tax audits and sales tax reviews
•    Oversee fraud prevention, loss mitigation, and shrink controls
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
•    Lead budget preparation and forecasting for fuel and convenience store operations
•    Analyze fuel price volatility and margin impacts on financial performance
•    Partner with operations, merchandising, and fuel procurement teams on strategic initiatives
•    Provide financial modeling and scenario analysis to executive leadership
Systems & Process Improvement
•    Oversee accounting systems related to POS, fuel management, inventory, and ERP platforms
•    Drive automation, standardization, and efficiency improvements across accounting processes
•    Lead system implementations, upgrades, and integrations involving fuel and retail data


Leadership & Collaboration:
•    Lead, mentor, and develop accounting managers and staff
•    Establish performance objectives and ensure professional development
•    Collaborate cross functionally with operations, fuel, merchandising, finance, and IT leadership
•    Act as a trusted financial advisor to senior management

•    High attention to detail with strategic mindset
•    Ability to manage complexity and tight deadlines in fast paced environments


Qualifications:
•    Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CMA preferred.
•    5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in the convenience store, retail fuel, or energy sector.
•    Strong knowledge of fuel pricing, inventory management, and tax reporting.
•    Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Oracle, or SAP) and Microsoft Excel.
•    Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
•    Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
•    Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.


Physical Demands:
•    The role requires regular standing, long periods of sitting at a desk to use a computer, manual dexterity, and the ability to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds occasionally. The incumbent must also be able to perform duties in varying work conditions, such as confined spaces.
