Field Process Engineer (Phoenix, AZ)
The Field Process Engineer works closely with customers and equipment to resolve process and tool performance challenges. This role requires strong technical judgment, structured problem-solving, clear communication, and the ability to drive customer issues to resolution while distinguishing facts from hypotheses and minimizing operational risk.
What you'll be working on
-
Support ASM tools through installation, startup, qualification, warranty, high-volume manufacturing (HVM) ramp, and production phases.
-
Monitor process performance, tool matching, stability, and open issues through structured data analysis and follow-up.
-
Drive containment, recovery, and corrective actions when process or tool performance targets are not met.
-
Design, execute, and analyze experiments to support qualification, troubleshooting, process optimization, tool matching, and customer-requested improvements.
-
Collect and interpret process, metrology, equipment, and performance data to support fact-based decision making.
-
Apply structured troubleshooting, DOE methodologies, statistical analysis, and measurement-system validation to identify and resolve issues.
-
Partner with customer engineering teams, ASM Field Service Engineers, account teams, and global subject matter experts to resolve technical challenges.
-
Clearly communicate findings, action plans, risks, ownership, and timelines during routine and escalated customer situations.
-
Develop issue timelines, technical reports, escalation packages, passdowns, and closure documentation.
-
Share best practices, lessons learned, and key updates across local, account, and global support teams.
-
Maintain compliance with intellectual property requirements, controlled change processes, and customer communication guidelines.
What we are looking for
-
6+ years of semiconductor equipment experience or equivalent hands-on technical experience.
-
Experience supporting semiconductor capital equipment in HVM, customer support, process development, applications engineering, or field support environments.
-
Demonstrated success supporting customer escalations, qualification activities, process transfers, tool matching, scale-up efforts, or continuous improvement projects.
-
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills at the system and process level.
-
Experience working in customer-facing and cross-functional environments.
-
Ability to effectively collaborate with Field Service Engineers, customer engineers, account teams, and global technical experts while maintaining ownership and accountability.
-
Comfortable working in fast-paced environments with incomplete information while avoiding unsupported root-cause conclusions or uncontrolled process changes.
-
Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills.
-
Experience using data analysis tools such as Excel, JMP, Python, MATLAB, or similar platforms.
-
Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes and fab operations.
-
Experience supporting global customers and/or high-volume manufacturing environments.
-
Experience with CMP, polishing, or related wafer processing equipment preferred.
-
Ability to travel internationally as required.
-
Flexibility to support extended hours, weekends, or additional fab time during qualifications, escalations, and critical customer events.
What sets you apart
-
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
-
Strong foundation in one or more of the following areas:
-
Semiconductor processing
-
Thin films and deposition
-
Vacuum systems
-
Gas, pressure, and flow control
-
Reaction kinetics and surface chemistry
-
Plasma or thermal processes
-
Metrology and data analysis
-
-
Experience with, or the ability to quickly learn, CMP processes and applications.
Experienced candidates should demonstrate increasing levels of ownership, technical leadership, customer engagement, mentoring, and the ability to lead complex troubleshooting and qualification activities across cross-functional teams.
