At Loblaw Digital, we know that our customers expect the best from us. Why is this role important?

Winter 2027 Work Term

Term Length: 4 months

Term Start: January 6, 2027

Term End: April 16, 2027

The pay range for the co-op student role will reflect factors such as the candidate's experience, academic level, and the specific skillset required for the role.

Loblaw has adopted the following hybrid working model (a combination of working between the office and remotely). Colleagues can work remotely up to 1 day a week, while spending the other 4 days in the office (to be determined by each business unit).

At Loblaw Digital, we know that our customers expect the best from us. Whether that means building the best, most innovative online shopping experience, or designing an app that will impact the lives of people across the country, we’re up for the challenge. From our office in Downtown Toronto, we’ve created leading eCommerce experiences in the online grocery shopping, beauty, pharmacy, and apparel spaces, and we’re only just getting started.

Why is this role important?

As a Product Designer Co-op, you’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience shaping the future of online shopping for millions of Canadians. You’ll work closely with a team of designers who are passionate about user-centered design and learn how to collaborate with product managers and developers to bring intuitive and accessible digital experiences to life.

This is your chance to join a high-performing, supportive team, build your skills, and make a real contribution to projects that matter.

What you’ll do

  • Learn to think in systems by auditing the existing component library before proposing anything new, and practicing how to separate a reusable platform capability from a one-off feature need.

  • Build complete components in Figma with guidance, reusing existing atoms, applying auto layout and slots, and accounting for variants, states, responsive breakpoints, and content truncation.

  • Practice the design-to-code workflow by handing a Figma component to the coding agent, and iterating on the generated component, Storybook stories, Code Connect mapping, and tests.

  • Verify implementations in Storybook by checking meaningful variants, states, content extremes, and theme behaviour, and flagging discrepancies between the coded component and the design.

  • Support component quality reviews by participating in the component critique and accessibility audit.

  • Document what design files can't communicate (behaviour, microinteractions, character counts, and image safe zones).

  • Participate in peer review and merge requests to see work through to the integrated library.

Does this sound like you?

  • You're curious about how things are built, not just how they look. You like understanding the structure underneath an interface, and you're eager to learn from designers and engineers who've been doing it a while.

  • You think in patterns rather than one-offs. When you solve something, you're interested in whether it will come up again and what a reusable version would look like.

  • You bring real care to detail work like naming, spacing, states, and edge cases, and you'd rather ask a question about an ambiguous spec than guess at it.

  • You take critique well and give it generously. This work moves through constant review, and you see that as how components get better, not as a hurdle.

  • You adapt quickly to unfamiliar tools and evolving processes, including AI-assisted workflows, and you're energized by a fast-moving digital environment.

Your qualifications should include:

  • Currently enrolled in an interaction design, product design, HCI, computer science or related program, and returning to studies after the work term.

  • A portfolio (academic, personal, or professional) that shows how you think, not only what you made. We're most interested in work where you can explain the structure behind a decision.

  • Working knowledge of Figma, including components, variants, and auto layout.

  • Some exposure to front-end fundamentals such as HTML and CSS, or comfort reading component code.

  • Curiosity about AI-assisted design and development tools. Hands-on experience with a coding agent is a bonus.

  • Interest in accessibility and inclusive design, and willingness to learn against WCAG standards.

  • If you meet most of these and are curious about the rest, we'd like to hear from you.
