Counterpart · Remote · Remote (United States)

Counterpart is an insurtech platform reimagining management and professional liability for the modern workplace. We believe that when businesses lead with clarity and confidence, they become more resilient, more innovative, and better prepared for what’s ahead. That’s why we built the first Agentic Insurance™ system — where advanced AI and deep insurance expertise come together to proactively assess, mitigate, and manage risk. Backed by A rated carriers and trusted by brokers nationwide, our platform helps small businesses grow with confidence. Join us in shaping a smarter future, helping businesses Do More With Less Risk®.

As a Technical Product Manager at Counterpart, you own the product direction for a Pod. You talk directly to brokers, carriers, internal partners, and customers to discover what matters. You turn what you learn into initiatives, break initiatives into launchable projects, and write the high-level product requirements for each one. You partner with an Engineering Lead who does the same for the technical side. Together you produce a plan concrete enough to size, fund, and staff.

Once a project is funded, a Project Lead rounds out the requirements and plays them back to you. You confirm the project still solves the right problem, then get out of the way. You own the outcome, not the execution.

You report to the Head of Technical Product.

YOU WILL

Own the Business Area

  • Own the roadmap for a Pod. Discover the problems worth solving by talking directly to brokers, carriers, internal partners, and customers.
  • Turn business intent into initiatives that move the metrics. Pitch them into the planning cycle. Defend the sequencing. Earn the resources.
  • Own the business outcomes. Track the metrics. Report progress. Kill initiatives that are not working.

Plan the Work

  • Break each initiative into concrete launchable units: projects that ship something real.
  • Write the high-level product requirements for each project. Enough detail to plan, size, and staff. Not a full specification. The Project Lead rounds out the rest.
  • Check with the other Technical Product Managers before locking an approach: is anyone solving a similar problem, and can we solve it once instead of twice.
  • Partner with your Engineering Lead, who writes the high-level technical requirements for the same projects. You own what and why. They own how, at the system level.
  • Roll projects up to a rough t-shirt size (multi-month or single month). For multi-month projects, define what is achievable within one month.

Review Through Reviews

  • Run the product review for each funded project. The Project Lead plays back the rounded-out requirements. You confirm the project solves the right problem, the experience fits, and the scope holds. Bring in other Technical Product Managers when the project touches their Pods. Then development begins.
  • Stay available as the Project Lead checks in and iterates. Answer questions fast. Do not become a standing meeting.

Redesign Workflows with AI

  • Define where AI should own the workflow, where humans stay in the loop, and where human judgment is non-negotiable. This is not an add-on to the role. It is the core of the role at Counterpart.
  • Own what happens when the AI gets it wrong. Design the fallback. Define the escalation. Build the feedback loop.
  • Evaluate prototypes and ideas from across the company. Determine which have the business case, technical feasibility, and strategic fit to become initiatives. Kill the ones that do not.

Drive Adoption

  • Ensure adoption of what your Pod ships. Documentation, training, demos, and office hours are part of the job.
  • Monitor usage and business outcomes. Use data to identify what to double down on, what to cut, and what to build next.

YOU HAVE

  • Experience owning a product area in an insurtech, B2B SaaS, or regulated industry. You have made and defended prioritization calls, including cutting good ideas that did not fit.
  • A track record of driving adoption, not just launches. You measure what happens after the feature ships.
  • Experience owning a product area where the core workflow was being redesigned by AI, not just augmented. You made decisions about where humans stayed in the loop and why.
  • Enough technical fluency to work closely with engineers building with AI tools. You do not need to write code. You need to understand system boundaries, data flows, and trade-offs well enough to have a real conversation with your Engineering Lead.
  • Comfort using AI tools in your own workflows.
  • The ability to translate between business stakeholders and engineers without losing meaning in either direction.
  • Domain curiosity about insurance. You either understand the Managing General Agent (MGA) model or you are motivated to learn it.
  • Low ego and high Emotional Quotient (EQ). You influence without authority, take feedback well, and leave your ego out of product decisions.
  • Experience working with distributed, remote teams.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH:

  • Tanner Hackett, CEO & Founder: Having founded two other major startups, including Button and Lazada, Tanner now spends his time focused on mental health through his philanthropy, Openminded.org, in addition to reading, surfing, yoga, and enjoying the outdoors.
  • Chris Shafer, Chief of Staff: Chris is a published scientific author, having studied the neural correlates of gratitude at the lauded Brain and Creativity Institute. He has since helped to launch numerous businesses in which he held a variety of critical roles from product management to business operations to strategic partnerships. Chris received his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California.
  • Dave Lin, Head of Product and Engineering: Dave has built and scaled B2B platforms at Yext, Apple, Amazon, and Hookit. He received his MS and BS in Electrical Engineering from University of California, San Diego.

COUNTERPART'S VALUES:

  • Conjoin Expectations - it is the cornerstone of autonomy. Ensure you are aware of what is expected of you and clearly articulate what you expect of others.
  • Speak Boldly & Honestly - the only failure is not learning from mistakes. Don’t cheat yourself and your colleagues of the feedback needed when  expectations aren’t being met.
  • Be Entrepreneurial - control your own destiny.  Embrace action over perfection while navigating any obstacles that stand in the way of your ultimate goal.
  • Practice Omotenashi (“selfless hospitality”) - trust will follow.  Consider every interaction with internal and external partners an opportunity to develop trust by going above and beyond what is expected.
  • Hold Nothing As Sacred - create routines but modify them routinely.  Take the time to reflect on where the business is today, where it needs to  go, and what you have to change in order to get there.
  • Prioritize Wellness - some things should never be sacrificed. We create an environment that stretches everyone to grow and improve, which is fulfilling, but is only one part of a meaningful life.

Our estimated pay range for this role is $170,000 to $210,000. Base salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, market data, location, internal equitability, and experience.

We value and celebrate our differences and we believe being open about who we are allows us to do the best work of our lives.
