Drive innovation in healthcare, transform patient outcomes, and advance your career today.

Macquarie University Hospital is a high-volume centre in structural heart disease, with a clinical program that is deliberately built alongside a translational research and innovation program. That program spans advanced imaging, artificial intelligence, device bioengineering and clinical trials of novel structural heart interventions, including new transcatheter mitral and tricuspid technologies.

We are seeking a cardiology trainee or early-career cardiovascular clinician to join this program in a 12-month advanced fellowship. The role combines multidisciplinary clinical training in advanced structural heart disease with dedicated time for research, biomedical innovation and academic development. Clinical training will be shaped around your sub-specialty interest, whether that is advanced imaging, heart failure management or structural heart interventions.

You will work closely with a multidisciplinary Heart Team across the diagnosis, planning and management of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and other structural heart interventions. It is a genuine opportunity to develop specialist expertise in a setting where clinical practice, research and education operate together rather than in parallel.

About the Role

As the Structural Heart Fellow, you will contribute to the care of patients with complex valvular and structural heart disease while building the imaging, procedural and research skills that underpin a career in this sub-specialty. You will be supervised by experienced clinicians and supported to take an active part in identifying unmet clinical needs and translating them into research and innovation projects.

  • Participate in the inpatient and outpatient clinical care of patients with structural heart disease

  • Perform and interpret structural heart disease transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), including interventional TOE for procedural guidance

  • Assist with case planning and provide intra-procedural support for TAVI and related interventions

  • Present at multidisciplinary team meetings and educational forums

  • Liaise with patients, families and general practitioners to support integrated, coordinated care

  • Contribute to the innovation program, clinical research, audits and academic publications

Our mission is straightforward: to improve lives through compassionate, coordinated and effective care centred on the patient, supported by world-class research and teaching. That is how we Heal. Learn. Discover.

About You

  • FRACP (or equivalent) in Cardiology, or close to completion

  • Demonstrated interest in structural heart disease

  • Strong clinical skills, including competence in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, or a clear commitment to developing interventional imaging skills

  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to work with patients, families and referring clinicians

  • Well-developed organisational skills and the ability to contribute within a multidisciplinary team

  • Research, audit or quality improvement experience (highly desirable)
