We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) Programmer Analyst in the Strategic Operations division of the Water Department and reports directly to the Assistant Water Director. The LIMS section is responsible for the following:

  • Supports the environmental laboratory (Central Laboratory) by working hands-on with laboratory staff to ensure the laboratory data is accurate, compliant, and efficient.
  • Provides in-person support for the laboratory’s LIMS system by troubleshooting and resolving system-related issues that arise in the lab.
  • Plays a crucial role in developing and deploying system upgrades, adding new procedures, and modules to support evolving business needs.

This is an in-person position that works closely with the water/wastewater laboratory team to ensure that all LIMS processes comply with regulatory requirements from agencies such as NELAP, TCEQ, and the EPA, including strict adherence to change control and validation protocols. The position is responsible for day-to-day LIMS operations, maintenance, system administration, and providing user training.

This position is ideal for someone with a biology, chemistry, environmental science, or medical laboratory background with a solid understanding in laboratory data workflows. Advanced software engineering experience is not required; we value laboratory knowledge and the ability to learn technical skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Information Technology, Computer Science or related field
  • Five (5) years of hands-on experience in computer programming, implementing and managing a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or similar data management system
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Two (2) year of relevant laboratory testing experience
  • Hands-on experience with water and wastewater laboratory practices, procedural workflows, and terminology
  • Experience with Clinisys or similar LIMS platform
  • Working knowledge of SQL, VBA for queries, reporting, and data validation
  • Experience with SQL Developer, Access, Excel or similar tools for data analysis, querying, and reporting
  • Familiarity with NELAP, TCEQ, EPA or other accreditation/regulatory programs
  • Experience supporting laboratory IT systems or instrument integration
  • Strong technical documentation, project management, and training skills

The Senior LIMS Programmer Analyst job duties & responsibilities include: 

  • Support day-to-day LIMS operations, maintenance, system administration, and providing user training to meet operational and regulatory requirements
  • Develop and maintain SQL or PL/SQL scripts to support data validation, reporting, and automation
  • Develop and maintain laboratory reports within LIMS environment
  • Administer LIMS user roles, access controls, and workflow permissions
  • Troubleshoot LIMS technical issues and provide responsive support to end users
  • Support and validate laboratory computers systems and instrument integration
  • Work with IT teams, and vendors to resolve system or integration issues
  • Develop training materials, SOP, and provide hands-on user training
  • Maintain regular onsite presence to support daily lab operations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to contribute to the ongoing success of the laboratory
