Candidates should have a genuine interest in and aptitude for technology, product innovation, and the payments industry.
This role will partner closely with product management, engineering, design, marketing, and compliance teams, balancing legal risk with the need to ship products quickly in a highly competitive market.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day legal support and practical guidance to product, engineering, and technology teams across the full product lifecycle.
- Advise on product design and development, feature launches, terms of service, privacy policies, and end-user or merchant-facing agreements.
- Counsel on data privacy and security compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) as applied to consumer- and merchant-facing products.
- Review and negotiate technology and commercial agreements, including SaaS, API, cloud hosting, and third-party vendor/licensing arrangements.
- Translate payments industry regulatory considerations (e.g., PCI DSS, card network rules) into clear, actionable product guidance.
- Partner cross-functionally with product management, engineering, design, marketing, and compliance teams to balance legal risk with the need to ship quickly in a competitive market.
- Collaborate with other members of the global legal team to ensure consistency and alignment across the broader legal function.
Qualifications
- At least 7-10 years' experience in the practice of law, with substantial experience providing day-to-day legal support to product, engineering, or technology teams.
- Previous large law firm and/or in-house experience, ideally within a technology, software, fintech, or payments company.
- Demonstrated experience advising on the full product lifecycle, including product design and development, feature launches, terms of service, privacy policies, and end-user or merchant-facing agreements.
- Working knowledge of data privacy and security laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) and their application to consumer and merchant-facing products.
- Experience reviewing and negotiating technology and commercial agreements, including SaaS, API, cloud hosting, and third-party vendor/licensing arrangements.
- Awareness of payments industry regulatory considerations (e.g., PCI DSS, card network rules) and ability to translate them into practical product guidance.
- Problem-solver with the ability to provide clear, practical legal advice in a fast-paced, agile development environment while maintaining a high level of professionalism and sound judgment.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with product, engineering, design, and marketing teams, as well as other members of the legal department.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a cross-functional team.
- Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills and demonstrated good judgment.
