Montu UK · Hybrid · Hybrid London

What is the job?

Montu UK is one of the country’s fastest-growing healthtech businesses, transforming access to cannabis-based medicines through an integrated model spanning digital healthcare, specialist clinical services and pharmacy fulfillment. Through Alternaleaf and Montu Pharmacy, we support patients throughout their entire treatment journey.

We’re looking for a Senior Commercial Legal Counsel to help enable the next stage of our growth. This is a broad, hands-on role for a commercially minded lawyer who enjoys getting close to the business, solving problems and helping ambitious ideas move forward safely.

Reporting to the Head of Legal, you’ll work across our clinic, pharmacy, technology and wider commercial operations. You’ll negotiate important agreements, advise on new initiatives and help colleagues navigate a complex and evolving regulatory environment. You’ll be joining a fast-moving business where legal is expected to be a practical partner - not simply the team that identifies risk.

The role offers plenty of variety and visibility. One day you might negotiate a strategic partnership or technology agreement; the next, you could be helping launch a new patient service, advising on a marketing campaign or improving the way contracts are managed across the business.

What will you be doing?

  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including supplier and vendor contracts, service agreements, platform and licensing arrangements, strategic partnerships, marketing and sponsorship agreements, terms and conditions and NDAs.

  • Provide clear, practical and commercially focused legal advice to stakeholders across commercial, operations, governance, clinical, pharmacy, marketing and technology teams.

  • Partner with teams from the earliest stages of new projects, identifying legal and regulatory considerations and helping develop solutions that balance pace, opportunity and proportionate risk.

  • Support compliance with the UK legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to our operations, including contract and consumer law, advertising and marketing requirements, healthcare and pharmacy regulation, and data protection in collaboration with privacy specialists.

  • Support digital platform developments, new products, service launches, commercial partnerships and international contracting, particularly across Europe.

  • Translate complex legal requirements into straightforward, accessible advice that helps colleagues make confident decisions.

  • Develop and deliver practical training for non-legal teams on topics such as contracting fundamentals, confidentiality, marketing claims and relevant regulatory requirements.

  • Help make legal support simpler and more scalable by developing templates, playbooks, approval processes and self-service guidance.

  • Lead improvements to legal systems and ways of working, including contract repositories, contract lifecycle management, approvals and electronic signatures.

  • Explore how technology and AI can be used responsibly to improve legal research, drafting and contract management.

  • Manage multiple matters at once, exercising sound judgement over priorities and knowing when to escalate or seek input from senior legal colleagues.

What do you need?

  • Qualification as a solicitor in England and Wales, or as a CILEX lawyer, with approximately 4 - 8 years’ PQE

  • Strong commercial contracts experience gained in private practice, in-house or through a combination of both.

  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, supported by a sound understanding of core contract law principles.

  • Experience handling a varied commercial workload in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to prioritise effectively and deliver high-quality work at pace.

  • The confidence to advise and positively challenge stakeholders at different levels of seniority while building strong, trusted relationships.

  • A pragmatic and commercially aware approach to risk—you’ll be comfortable explaining what matters, why it matters and how we can move forward.

  • The ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and without unnecessary jargon.

  • Curiosity about digital health, online services and regulated industries, with an interest in developing deeper expertise across consumer protection, advertising, data protection, information governance and healthcare or pharmacy regulation.

  • A proactive, can-do mindset and a willingness to get stuck into whatever will help the team and wider business succeed.

Bonus points for;

  • Experience within healthcare, life sciences, digital health, pharmacy or another regulated industry would be valuable, but it isn’t essential. Experience within a start-up or scale-up environment, or working on international contracts - particularly across Europe - would also be beneficial.

  • Fluency in English is essential, and German language skills would be highly desirable.

What we offer:

  • Generous Leave: 25 days holiday (rising to 27 after year one and 30 after year three) + usual bank holidays

  • Pension Matching: Up to 5% employer matching contributions

  • Flexibility and Wellness: Work-from-home options, cycle-to-work scheme, private healthcare and more

  • Growth Opportunities: Collaborate across teams and represent Montu at events, with support to grow your skills and impact

  • Enhanced Maternity & Paternity Leave
