About Back to the Roots

Back to the Roots is America's #1 organic gardening company, dedicated to reconnecting families to where their food comes from through fun, simple, and educational gardening products. We're committed to sustainability, innovation, and making organic gardening accessible to everyone — and we're growing fast.

About the Role

The Soil Production Analyst is a critical hire for our Operations team. As we scale our soil network & contract manufacturing sites to support significant retail growth, we need someone who owns the analytical backbone of our soil production.

This person will own the numbers, the schedule, and the plan. You will translate the demand signal into a production schedule, maintain real-time inventory visibility across all soil sites, and flag risks before they become fires. You are the connective tissue between what we're selling, what we're making, and where it needs to be.

You have a passion for analytical rigor, love building systems that scale, and are energized by turning complex data into clear decisions. You work best when you own something fully — and you take pride in getting the details right.

This role is fully remote. If you happen to be based in the SF Bay Area, we get together for a weekly company lunches at our Oakland headquarters — so come hungry. But we're looking for the best person for the job, wherever they are.

What You'll Own

Production Schedule & Demand Alignment

  • Build and maintain the master production schedule across all soil contract manufacturing sites, sequencing production runs to match demand, inventory targets, and retailer windows.
  • Translate the demand signal — from sales forecasts, retailer commitments, and historical data — into a clear production plan that co-man team can execute against.
  • Identify and flag supply risks early: material shortages, capacity constraints, lead time gaps, and seasonal timing conflicts before they impact the business.
  • Work closely with the Soil Procurement & Production team to align production sequencing with procurement timelines and co-man capacity.

Inventory Management & Visibility

  • Maintain real-time inventory accuracy across all soil co-man sites and distribution locations, ensuring consistency between physical stock and NetSuite.
  • Work on end-of-month inventory verification and reconciliation — catching discrepancies before they become accounting or fulfillment problems.
  • Monitor safety stock levels for key inputs and finished goods, alerting the team to shortfalls before they impact production or retailer commitments.
  • Manage and track inventory transfers between manufacturing sites, inventory locations, and fulfillment centers with full documentation.

Purchase Order & Production Tracking

  • Be adjacent to purchase orders for raw materials and packaging across soil co-man sites — end to end from issuance through receipt.
  • Collect and audit daily and weekly production reports from manufacturing partners; update NetSuite to reflect real-time finished goods and raw material levels.
  • Track status of deliveries, costs, and production output; resolve and communicate material shortages with clear escalation to the right stakeholders.

Analysis, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Build and maintain performance dashboards tracking key metrics: fill rate, inventory turn, production accuracy, and COGS inputs — giving the team the visibility to make faster, better decisions.
  • Analyze production and supply data to identify cost savings, process inefficiencies, and network optimization opportunities.
  • Work with the Director of Operations to develop internal tools and processes that make the production planning function sustainable and scalable as we grow to more sites.
  • Support the improving our soil network — modeling network scenarios, freight costs, and inventory positioning across manufacturing and distribution tiers.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 2–4 years of experience in production planning, operations analysis, or supply chain coordination, ideally in a manufacturing, CPG, or co-man environment.
  • High proficiency in Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel — pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, scenario modeling, large data sets. You are faster and more accurate than the average analyst.
  • Experience with NetSuite or another ERP system strongly preferred; you know how to keep systems clean and up to date.
  • Strong analytical instincts — you read between the numbers, anticipate issues before they surface, and translate data into a clear action plan.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and follow-through. You do not let things fall through the cracks.
  • Clear communicator — written and verbal — with internal teams and external manufacturing partners.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, lean team environment where you own your work and figure things out.
  • Experience in lawn & garden, soil, agriculture, or a category with multi-site co-manufacturing is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite (Gmail, Sheets, Docs, Drive).

What Success Looks Like

  • Soil production planning is seamless — because this role owns it.
  • We enter peak season with a clear, sequenced production plan across all sites, and the team is executing against it — not scrambling.
  • Inventory discrepancies are caught before month-end, not discovered after.
  • Supply risks are flagged two to three weeks before they become problems.
  • The team has real-time visibility into production status without needing to chase down updates.

How to Apply & To be Considered

Please submit your resume and a brief note on what draws you to this role and how your experience maps to it. In the header of your note, make sure to include "I am the next Production Analyst at Back to the Roots!"

Über Back to the Roots

Back to the Roots is an Oakland, California based company founded in 2009 by two UC Berkeley seniors, Alejandro Velez and Nikhil Arora, who gave up corporate jobs to become urban mushroom farmers. Since that time, Back to the Roots has evolved from a single product to a thriving business dedicated to the disruptive proposition of "undoing food" through the creation of innovative products that inspire curiosity and reconnect families to their food.

Our first product was the Mushroom Kit that allowed anyone to grow fresh, organic mushrooms right out of a little brown box in just ten days. We next developed and pioneered the WaterGarden, a self-cleaning fish tank that grows food. Our products are across sold in thousands of locations categories including Whole Foods, Costco, Nordstrom, The Home Depot, Safeway, Kroger, and many other fine retail locations nationwide. Back to the Roots was a Martha Stewart American Made Awards winner and named as one of Forbes 25 Most Innovative Consumer Brands.

Back to the Roots is now working towards re-defining the "future of food" - one that is all about the "undoing of food" back to its simplest ingredients and least processed versions. How do we create and promote food that is made in a kitchen not a lab, and reconnect families back to their food? Our R&D team isn't biochemists and food scientists, it's our grandparents! We think there's a powerful movement that's just starting up around simplicity and un-doing. It is our vision that what "organic brands" were for baby-boomers, radically transparent and simple brands will be for millennials and our kids. Food is the most personal thing there is - it's what we put into our bodies 3x a day - and yet we're so disconnected from it and have so much trust around "new invented foods". We know what works, simple, real food and ingredients - we want to inspire a whole new generation to get excited about that!
